What is the "nukage"?

Tech stuff that doesn't make sense in Doom:

  • Nukage
  • The UAC
  • The plasma rifle
  • The BFG 9000
  • How the BFG 9000 works
  • The rocket launcher, let's be honest, its firing rate is kind of absurd.
  • Research bases on the moons of Mars
  • The floor plans for these moon bases
  • Basically all the tech textures
  • Teleporters

But see how you hand-waved or provided an explanation for everything but the nukage? You can do that for the nukage. It doesn't matter. Whatever backstory you decide to give the nukage is fine because in the long run the "canon" explanation for nukage doesn't really matter.

I made the topic literally to know the canonical version of nukage.

Any of these items listed can make sense in a science fiction story if they have a context.

According to Ultimate Doom E1M3, Toxins. Beyond that, generic glowing goo. In E1M3 it's toxins. In MAP10, it's some kind of fuel. If I had to speculate further, I'd say it's likely some kind of nuclear waste/nuclear fuel. That wouldn't be a toxin, but you CAN get radiation poisoning. (It's not quite the same as being affected by a toxin. And etymologically, toxin typically means something produced by organic elements, plants or animals producing it as a byproduct of their life cycle.)

The fact that you can find it in Doom 2 MAP10's (Refueling Base) four fuel tanks, suggests it's some sort of fuel. And then it's name seems to indicate it's radioactive (nukage deriving from the word nuke, a reference to nuclear). So, if you really want to stretch the speculation, it's likely some kind of radioactive fuel, possibly somehow extracted and refined from live organisms. How that would work is absolutely beyond me as radiation tends to kill living things.

That said, Doom isn't really well thought out when it comes to Lore. Or, well, it's not supposed to be. Your best bet for actual lore for doom would be the Doom Bible:

https://5years.doomworld.com/doombible/

For the most part, Tom Hall was the one trying to give Doom any form of lore, story or complex design. Then Romero and Carmack went like "nah" and most of it was thrown out aside from a few easter eggs. Doom is just not a game that thinks things through.

Unless the demons that have green blood (Barons and Hell Knights) are used in the extraction proccess. That would make sense, as if the living organism is from an entirely different realm or planet than our own, it is possible for them to be unaffected to things we are easily affected by. In a sense, doom does resemble alien invasion themes, a lot, before they were even cool...except war of the worlds lol

A substance that is known in futureTM
The substance concentration in pool is low, so you can't shoot it to make it explode, whereas in barrels has high concentration so it can explode.

I like when mods try to make sense of and explain these things, such as the various attempts to justify why chainsaws are present around these UAC bases. It's less about knowing the answer and more what kind of answers people come up with, from things like shipping errors to needing them for the 'hell trees'.

GBA Doom and Doom 2 are dope, they're not perfect, but for GBA FPSeseses, they're great.

A rarity then. Good to know, time to emulate when I get home...eventually

That actually makes quite a bit of sense. Demons having radioactive blood which also generates energy somehow. You could even segway that into explaining how the demons can conjure fire/plasma/energy projectiles to toss at the doomguy. They're literally walking fusion plants. Clever. Heh, at this point we're doing 1992 id's job for them though :p

Lol, somehow I wouldn't be surprised if at one point I end up writing another fanfiction variation of game lore.  So, if I ever need another creator...I know who to ask... or hire lol

I used to both write novels and GM for Shadowrun games. I have my own tabletop/textform RPG system and world built, too. So I have the experience. I don't know about hiring me because I'm a bit brain-damaged and can be unreliable and I wouldn't want to fuck things up for you. But if you feel like some trial writing ... Sure. Hit me up.

Aye.

To add to it:

Leakage

-age is a french suffix.

So for me i thought it is a playful Way with the Word to mix Leakage and Nuclear to Nukage, to make it clear that it is leaking nuclear Waste.

This made me realize, was "nukage" a term before Doom? Is it a term now?

It feels like it's a term outside of Doom but when I think about it, I guess it might not be. That's weird

it's honestly a good port for the GBA, it just has some things missing (e1m1's large tech pillars) and some missing textures (e2m1's cross is replaced with a brick texture), but that is most definitely due to hardware limitations, as this is portable doom in 2001. and probably the most controversial part of the GBA port of Doom (and Doom II) is the fact that certain things that were in the original were censored out by Nintendo. Other than some bad controls due to the GBA's button layout, everything else is completely fine and the game is pretty good.

since the GBA has the screen of a Ti-84 calculator, and your PC well... doesn't, it's going to look different compared to the GBA version. Also you don't have to see what the best lighting position is while you're playing on PC, so that's a plus lol.

they definitely are not perfect, but is pretty good for a portable port that came out 6 years before phones

Cyberdemon's secret soup sauce. There was an accident with delivery back in the day, UAC had to cover it up, but they did it poorly, because it was hard to clean up -  it's really thick and has weird texture and smells, so they had to put them in those free pits. Depending on spicy elements on that sauce it can hurt you.

That is a Question i also had and i have "total nukage" somehow in Mind, but more in the Sense as i find in a quick Search on https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/nukage

Quote

The process of nuking something, in various senses.

But it makes no Sense for the Texture of the Liquid, so i guess that it is just reasonable that the Word evolved twice.

Such Stuff happens very often :)

This is kind of my own "lore", so to speak, as one of the guiding principles in the way I'm designing techbases for The I.M.P. Act. Nukage is a mix of toxic industrial waste and contaminated coolant, generated as a byproduct of constructing and operating UAC teleporter research facilities (teleporters need nasty, nasty chemicals to work). Since nobody cares about the environment on Phobos, they just dump it outside without much thought. If there gets to be too much, they start building dams/causeways to direct it elsewhere.

Its the content of my sinuses, if this week is anything to go by!

In all seriousness, I think the best explanation is that UAC uses radioactive material to power everything, with the appropriately lax health and safety measures for a shady, futuristic mega-corporation.
