Pegleg Posted December 1, 2022 (edited) Welcome again to a new month of the IronEagle competition, the ironman challenge that welcomes all, regardless of your skill level. As long as you enjoy playing Doom, you're welcome to join us! This month, in honor of the 50th IronEagle, participants will challenge themselves against Doom II. That's right, we're playing the original iwad, released in September of 1994, where Doomguy saved the Earth from the onslaught of demons from Hell, and then went back to Hell to make sure they didn't return. Participants must play these maps on complevel 2 or Doom(strict). Doom II starts at Map 01. Survival is finishing Map 30. There are two secret maps, both of which are optional. Congratulations to this month's winners (further details are in the post below). UV: @4shockblast (Runner-up: @Asbadagba) HMP: @xX_Lol6_Xx (Runner-up: @LadyMistDragon) HNTR: @NoisyVelvet (Runner-up: @Andromeda) By the way, last December, I made a minor change to the rules. I decided to make that a December tradition. Therefore, in the spirit of the season, there is one rule change: If you die in a map, feel free to pistol start that map and continue on with your run. You don't have to do this if you don't want to, but the option is there. You get one free pistol start, and your run ends upon your second death. If you use your one pistol start exception, note that you used it, and on what map you used it. Enjoy! Spoiler Template for Chocolate: -iwad doom2.wad -skill <x> -warp 01 -record <IEdoom2> Template for PRBoom+: -iwad doom2.wad -complevel 2 -skill <x> -warp 01 -record <IEdoom2> Template for ZDoom: -iwad doom2.wad +compatmode 2 -skill <x> +map map01 -record <IEdoom2> it is possible you may have to use +set skill <x> for GZDoom <x> must be replaced by the skill level. 2 = HNTR, 3 = HMP, 4 = UV <IEdoom2> would be replaced with whatever you decide to call your demo, if you're submitting a demo Rules: The rules are basically the same as they have been. Either demos or streams are permissible. If you are creating a demo, post the demo. If you are streaming, post a video of the stream. Even if streaming, you can still submit a demo, if you want to. The basic rule is that you submit a demo/stream played at a particular difficulty level (HNTR, HMP, or UV) and you play without saving and reloading, ending your run when you die (or survive). The following are allowed (but not required): Freelook Crosshair Mods that are COSMETIC ONLY The following are NOT allowed: Crouching Jumping Mods that change ANY aspect of base gameplay, including (but not limited to) enemy behavior, enemy speed, player abilities, player speed, weapon damage, ammo, and enemy drops. Further, more specific, rules are listed below: Spoiler Submissions (except for streams, as described below) must include a demo. You may practice a mapset if you want, but these practice runs should not be submitted as your official entry, and your run would be Category 2, unless there are exceptional circumstances (such as described below). A run must be done in a singular sitting with no saves. (With room for breaks. This will be addressed below.) Streams and video runs are accepted provided you post a video of the stream/run or a link to the video. If you post a video of the stream, you may post a demo if you want, but it is not mandatory. You may also post a demo if you, for some reason, do not want to post the video or a link. Secret levels, if present, do not have to be completed for a survival run. If they are completed, they are extra credit. Any port is accepted provided it will actually run the mapset. There is no preference. Spoiler Of course, if you want to try a limit-removing/Boom map in Chocolate Doom, be my guest. However, be aware that your run may be over rather quickly. Don't say you weren't warned. Category System: Category 1: Blind run. This explains itself. You have no knowledge of the wad and have not played/seen it before. I'm willing to be somewhat lenient with this Category. For example, if you die early in Map 01, and then decide to play again for your run, you can still call it Category 1. Category 2: Non-blind. If you have played the wad before and/or possess significant foreknowledge, your run is non-blind. Basically, anything that is not Category 1 is Category 2. If you're unhappy with your blind run, feel free to record a new run, and submit that run instead. (Just don't submit your first run.) If you want to submit your first run, no matter how you perform, by all means, go ahead and do it. You shouldn't feel that you HAVE to submit a run you're dissatisfied with, just to preserve a "Category 1" status. If you want to go back and submit a second run, you're welcome to do so, but, at this time, it won't be counted. Difficulty System: You may submit a demo/stream for only one of HNTR, HMP, or UV. Choose only one, because subsequent submissions will be rejected (i.e., if you submit a HMP demo, the HNTR demo you then submit will be rejected). We're not using the 1CC rule set here. Your first submission is what counts. Only runs from the same difficulty will be pitted against each other. Each difficulty will be graded separately. Submission: When you submit your run, please the include the following information: The category (1 or 2) The difficulty If you survived, your time and whether you also completed either of the secret maps If you didn't survive, the map where you died If you used your one pistol start exception and on which map you used it Time of death Kill count upon death The port you used (if you included a demo) A link to the stream/video (if you did a stream) You may include a commentary about the maps or details about them, if you want to. If you do include specific information about the map (e.g. "The demon trap in Map 08 is rough"), please put it in a spoiler, so that people that want a completely blind experience won't be tipped off. If you're just putting in a general comment (e.g., "Pro tip: don't get hit"), then no need for a spoiler. Attempting to max the maps is not necessary to win. Ranking for this mapset will be determined by: Survival, with both secret maps and without pistol restart Survival, with one secret map and without pistol restart Survival without pistol restart Survival, with both secret maps and with pistol restart Survival, with one secret map and with pistol restart Survival with pistol restart Time for survival Map of death (in descending order from 30 to 16, then 32, then 31, then from 15 to 01; dying on a map following a pistol death restart will rank lower than dying on that map if you had not had a pistol death restart) Time it took to reach the map of death Kill count in the map of death If you die, please wait a few seconds before quitting. Breaks: Everyone gets tired. Sometimes people survive longer than they expected. Nature calls. Every now and then, there are family emergencies. Needing to take a break shouldn't necessarily end a promising run. While you should try to complete the run in a single setting, this isn't always possible. If you have to take a break, try to make it quick. Happy Dooming! SleepyVelvet Posted December 1, 2022 (edited) I might do this demo in the UV-Pegleg category for extra challenge. UV-Pegleg: Doomguy has only one real leg and one peg-leg, and thus can only turn in one direction. One and only one turning direction is disabled through the full recording of a UV-Pegleg demo. (A superset category of UV-Tornado/UV-Ballerina). Maybe running is disabled too... edit: I'm thinking that you can only run when you also are also inputting a turn. That way, you mostly stumble forward cuz you have a pegged leg, but also can a run but in a skewed direction. - That way, the mandatory Underhalls jump is at least possible, while also on theme. Pseudonaut Posted December 2, 2022 Category 2, UV, DSDA-Doom, dead on map22 after exiting map21 at 1:39:09. Played both secret maps, didn't use the pistol start exception. ie50-pseudonaut.zip https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1667552815 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
Bdubzzz Posted December 2, 2022 Category 2 both secret maps Survived in 1:18:16.... really awfully slow considering Doom 2 is the IWAD I know the best but there is a difference between "knowing" and "doing" the tricks. Also had a complete mind blank on how to reach the secret exit on map 31 and probably wasted at least 15 minutes there alone. Oh well DWIronEagle-doom2-dubz.zip 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
Meowgi Posted December 2, 2022 (edited) IE_Doom2_Meowgi.zip Category 2 UV-"Speed", continuous, both secret maps - died on map 22 at like 66 minutes in? I took a survivalist approach but tried to implement the speedrunning tricks I know and have practiced into the run. kinda got f'ed over by chaingunners in Catacombs at the end tho :) Edited December 2, 2022 by Meowgi 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
SCF Posted December 2, 2022 Cat 2, UV difficulty Survived (with secret maps) in 109:25 + 57:30 = 166:55 Died and restarted on MAP23 DWIL_Doom2_SCF.zip I realized after the fact that you're probably supposed to restart and continue within the same demo, instead of starting a new one. I just took a short break and then started again from map 23. If that disqualifies the second part of the run, then whoops! My inexperience with these maps really shows. Knowing the general layout is one thing, but I frequently got lost because I didn't know where to find a certain key or switch. Died blowing myself up on a Barrel o' Fun(tm). I didn't expect to survive that map on pistol start, but had a miraculous recovery. Als features the worst Icon of Sin fight in demo-recorded history. I didn't know the rocket timing, accidentally grabbed both megaspheres at the same time, and the icon kept spawning pain elementals. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post

xX_Lol6_Xx Posted December 2, 2022 (edited) HMP, Cat 2 Survived in 59:13 min with both secret maps and a pistol start in Map30 (Got telefraged) Edit: The video was viddumped with vsmooth and a custom sounds wad, the demo itself was recorded with nothing but the iwad. Dropping the demo too if you're interested :3 Demo: IEDoom2Lol6.zip Comments: Spoiler Man my keyboard started to misbehave. Map 14 is the proof of that. Used my death exception in MAP30 cuz I didn't (and still don't) want to record the whole thing again. Edited December 2, 2022 by xX_Lol6_Xx 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

LadyMistDragon Posted December 9, 2022 (edited) Category: 2 Difficulty HMP Dead on Map 16 Time 1:15....49? No, I don't know this wad front to back, how did you guess? I quite literally haven't played it in 13+ years. But anyway, the imps near the exit got me. Actually, I feel like I just needed the blue key, but now I'm not so sure. Some other thoughts. The P** is still far too earning of its name, with too much nonsense to speak of The Factory was shorter but somehow managed to be nearly as bad. Strangely enough, Downtown went perfectly find but oh god, that elevator near the yellow key is sooo slow. I was a touch confused about the secret exit as you will be able to tell. Like I knew you had to walk to the platform with the Invulnerbility Sphere but I failed to realize the sector simply wasn't all that big. And I forgot about restarting to be honest. That's fine, though. Imagine trying to get through Map 18 without a BFG. I'm good bruh lmd_doomeagle2.zip Edited December 9, 2022 by LadyMistDragon 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Suitepee Posted December 12, 2022 (edited) https://youtu.be/0XzJg-LEd1E = part 1. (starts at 1:34:48) https://youtu.be/e-aRkZbQNPc = part 2. Well I'm pretty familiar with vanilla Doom 2, so I guess this counts as a prepared run of sorts. Alas I was NOT prepared for my own stupidity on Tricks & Traps (map 8), and died to the falling platform trap at the end. I then used my second chance and somehow clawed back from a tough pistol start on that map to make it all the way (including doing both secret maps) to my nemesis in the Icon of Sin..... ...only to be telefragged whilst desperately trying to get a third rocket in the IoS' maw! The annoying part was that I then had another non-Ironeagle attempt immediately afterwards and nailed it pretty comfortably; where it not for my stupid death on map 8, I would have survived on the second chance. But so it goes. This was also my first Ironman-type attempt to go into a second stream since the very first Ironman League back in 2016 with Jenesis. (Ok I forgot about H2H-Xmas from last year!) NaZa Posted December 21, 2022 (edited) UV cat 2. Attempted to speedrun Chasm, slipped into an inescapable pit due to a backwards-charging lost soul instead. Not sure why I ignored signs of my fatigue from the map prior where I took around three arch-vile hits and went to 5 HP. Realized the same thing as SCF regarding the demos restarting upon death but oh well. Was a fun Ironeagle year, thank you for maintaining the competition @Pegleg. ironeagle_dec22_naza.zip On 12/13/2022 at 12:42 AM, Suitepee said: This was also my first Ironman-type attempt to go into a second stream since the very first Ironman League back in 2016 with Jenesis. Wasn't your H2H-Xmas run also segmented into two? EDIT: Pistol started from MAP24. Got through some extremely tough stuff to get to MAP30 and need only a single shot to finish the Icon of Sin. Guess who got to 13 HP and failed to jump to the megasphere. Defo not me. ironeagle_naza_PS.zip Edited December 22, 2022 by NaZa 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

SleepyVelvet Posted December 27, 2022 Category: 2 Difficulty: HNTR Pegleg (*Keyboard only: Run and Right-Turn disabled) Dead on: Map30 (FUCK) Kills: N/A Time of Arrival: 2:06:55. Time of Death: 2:08:55. Demo: noisy_Doom2_IronPegleg.zip *-Underhalls jump is actually doable without run. This is where I decided to completely avoid running from here on out. -I forgot where the keys were in The Citadel, so I glided into the exit instead. -I did a rocket jump on Gotcha because I couldn't figure it out otherwise. -I accidentally mouse turned when returning from the bathroom at the start of Barrels of Fun, but it's redundant. -The living end scared me at the very very last jump of the map (fitting), so I decided to rely on SR50 to clear this one. Slowing things down helped me feel some of the original charm again from Doom 2. HMP might be a more fun experience than HNTR, whereas HNTR is mostly just a chill time where you soak in and explore, but there were still some thrilling encounters and traps here and there. head_cannon Posted December 29, 2022 IEdoom2UVhc.zip Category: 2 Difficulty: UV Survived in 1:23:40 Normally these competitions are about the fun of improvising during a sightread, but in this case I revisited my data from when I was studying the Par Times and did a bunch of practising before making actual attempts. That's not as fun as a purely blind experience where you just act on instinct, but I really wanted a complete run for the sake of IWAD completion, and I'm relieved that I got it on the very first try, even if there were several suboptimal moments where I had to recover from botching an encounter and was confronted with the possibility of losing the entire run. These levels contain the same things I like about the Doom 1 levels: how so many of them are a big nonlinear sandbox of possibilities which will vex new players and bully them a bit, but allow returning players to find a golden path that cuts right through. Of course, whenever I'm trying to go fast in the Doom 1 episodes, it's a brisk 15 or 20-minute run, which is quite a different thing from this 90 minute behemoth. I get that id software had to make the "big box on retail shelves" release last long enough so that nobody could complete it on the same afternoon they bought it (and I honestly do enjoy a well-done 30-level singleplayer campaign which assumes that you'll be tackling it in a piecemeal fashion across several sessions), but I have no intention of ever crafting another d2all run again. I still respect the thrills & spills of how the Doom 2 campaign builds you up and tears you down, but for the purposes of demo recording I can only recommend the individual levels as pistol start challenges, not as a complete 30-level run like this. - Still, I'd been thinking about making a Doom 2 demo for a while, and this was just the kick in the pants I needed to finally act on that idea and make it a reality. Thanks for organizing these IronEagle events; this was an odd one, but an interesting one. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
