Doomkid Posted December 5, 2022 As I watched decino's video on the OUCHFACE behavior some time ago, the (correct!) claim that the face only displays for 1 tic when you take damage while picking up a big health item bothered me. I KNEW I had seen the ouchface, not-that-rarely, during combat as a kid. At 1:35ish in this video, you can see the face lasting for what looks like closer to 10-20 tics. It feels good on one hand, because I knew I didn't imagine all those times I saw the face for "decently long" periods as a kid, definitely longer than one tic, but on the other hand, why does this happen? It's really weird. It does feel good to know it can/does happen for longer than 1 tic at times, though. I knew I wasn't (fully) crazy!! 9 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted December 5, 2022 Just crossposting the answer because it has to be known for the 3 people who will get curious about this in future: Quote decino — Today at 4:00 AM As for why 1:35 shows it for longer, it's at the end of the head turning logic So if you heal up on the last tic of the damage direction logic, the ouch face won't get overridden It's pretty precise That's my hypothesis I'm content with this explanation! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
NoWits Posted December 5, 2022 Fancy that! I'm pretty sure the first time I saw the Ouch face as a wee lad, it was on screen for a good second or so. Definitely enough time for me to register this most unusual expression. I just figured the Doom guy was surprised that he picked up a health pack at such low health. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
vyruss Posted December 5, 2022 (edited) I could reliably do this on E1M3 if I'm not mistaken, by grabbing the medikit the same time as poison damage occurred and would last as long as the next tic that poison damage would proc. Not sure if this is of any value at all to the conversation but I distinctly remember doing it for fun. I think I was doing this with both Shareware 1.8 and Ultimate Doom 1.9 Edited December 5, 2022 by vyruss Versions for clarity 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gifty Posted December 7, 2022 If you experience an ouchface lasting longer than 4 tics, contact your doctor immediately 11 Quote Share this post Link to post

I think I was doing this with both Shareware 1.8 and Ultimate Doom 1.9 Actually, it happens in Shareware 1.666, as you can see here on YouTube (it happens at around 1:57): Anyway, interesting video Doomkid. I don't remember the ouch face lasting a long time in vanilla Doom. I remember seeing the OUCH FACE as a kid a few times, mostly when watching shareware 1.666 demos. I also remember seeing it happening sometimes in Doom 2 as well but at that time I didn't know that grabbing health while getting hurt would make it show it up. I even remember freaking out one time (I don't remember if it was in shareware 1.2 or shareware 1.666) when in E1M1, the ouch face suddenly showed up after blowing up a barrel nearby and then grabbing a health bonus or a medkit during that time. I also noticed recently (in vanilla/chocolate doom and PrBoom+) that starting a level on top of a damaging floor will usually show the Ouch Face. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
vyruss Posted December 9, 2022 Now that I think of it FistMarine, you may be right - I remember getting Doom 2 before getting Ultimate Doom, Doom 2 CD had shareware 1.666 on it which might be where I saw this. Forgive me for using wrong versions, this was over 20 years ago. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheMagicMushroomMan Posted December 9, 2022 Am I the only one here who never even looks at Doomguy's ugly-ass face? I wouldn't have noticed this if I played the game for a thousand years. I guess you could say Doomguy has a "facial tic" hurr hur 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted December 10, 2022 I barely understand tics in Doom, but I think there have been plenty of times where it lasted slightly longer. It isn't something I really examined too carefully. Maybe I'll do that some time! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
