Heretic Mapping

OfficalGeeDee

Question

For UDB, if one were to make maps for Heretic I assume Hexen Format would be advised over Doom Format. But what I'd really like to know is this - Does Heretic act the same way as Doom/Doom 2 where there are no floors above floors? Maps would be constructed the same as vanilla Doom?

Vanilla Heretic uses the same map format as Doom (with just some differences in the list of line types, sector types, and, obviously, thing types). If it used the Hexen map format, then that would be known as the Heretic map format instead, since Heretic came before Hexen.

As for room-over-room stuff, none of the vanilla Doom engine games have that. It's strictly a port feature. A GZDoom Heretic map can have 3D floors and portals and stuff just fine, for example, while a vanilla Heretic map cannot.

What's the real question?

In heretic, or even hexen, there are no floor over floor. If you dont want to be bothered by limitation, go straight for udmf.

As gez says, it's the same as for Doom.

Here's an example Heretic map I did a while back that uses projected 3D floors to make walkways (in the lava caverns). It is in DiHF ('cos Eureka doesn't support UDMF currently), but other than that, it is an identical mapping process to Doom maps, and the creation of 3D floors with control sectors defining them is also the same.

You just need to ensure that your IWAD is Heretic of course...
