kalensar Posted November 7, 2023 Nope! Cant get enough of it in fact. I love the technical aspect even if its completely new games based on Doom running on archaic hardware like ZX Spectrum Doom. I'm only a software hound when it comes to my Doom personal knowledge, but I can definitely appreciate the finesse and mechanics of getting Doom to run on stuff it has zero rights on even being on. The same logic also applies to building games inside of Minecraft that have no business even running in that environment like Sonic the Hedgehog GreenHills Zone 1 . Basically, since we have the power to build complete rebuilds or remakes inside of ZDoom/GZDoom Engine, there's absolutely nothing wrong porting Doom into a ham sandwich as far as I am concerned. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
OliveTree Posted November 7, 2023 i'll get tired of the meme when it stops producing interesting ports (and """ports""") of doom to weird pieces of hardware 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

bofu Posted November 9, 2023 When someone gets an actual copy of Doom or a source port of it running on something, that interests me, even if it's limited. When someone makes an approximation of Doom that has no actual relation to the Doom code, i generally don't care. That "Doom" you got running on a TI-83? That's not Doom any more than someone making a PowerPoint of screenshots is Doom. The exception to that is when the end product is interesting on its own, like the Doom demake for some sort of Pico-8 here. It has entirely new levels and textures, and it's far more interesting than those little generic raycasters that get turned into clickbait. https://youtu.be/WxDqsAI35iw?si=5RBXo6PfHkcJ0WUu 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
houston Posted November 9, 2023 It's a huge pet peeve of mine as well, right next to all of those "Look at this incredible Doom mod! How did they get it working on this ancient engine!?" vids which clearly feature gzdoom instead 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

It wasn't even the test device that was running the game but an external one, using the pregnancy test's screen for the output. I guess the SNES port of DOOM is also questionable since most of the work is done by the FX chip but hey. Anyone else annoyed by this or is it just me not allowing any fun? I'd say maybe a bit of both. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
SealSpace Posted November 11, 2023 As for my serious and honest thoughts regarding this particular matter: I find the "can object XYZ with a digital or electronic screen run Doom" memes to be somewhat fascinating and impressive in and of themselves. And they piqued my interest initially. But as of now, after watching a segment of AVGN's episode on Doom when he touched upon this subject a year ago, I can safely say that the memes kinda felt way past its peak for me. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
SealSpace Posted November 11, 2023 (edited) With that being said however... I'd honestly be a lot more emotionally invested or interested in seeing a different (and better) boomer shooter from the 90's as the subject of these "can object XYZ with a digital or electronic screen run game ABC" meme templates than just Doom for a change. Preferably Wolfenstein 3D? Spear of Destiny? Blake Stone? Corridor 7? Operation Body Count? Rise of the Triad? Catacomb 3D? Or if you wanted to stick to another Doom engine game, I'd honestly rather prefer Heretic, Hexen, and Strife. Or hell even Hacx or Doom 64. Now that would actually be something.
