If it makes you feel better, I started dabbling around with Doom Builder in 2009. I have completed and released 6 maps since then, the first one being in 2021.

Yes, quality over quantity. Having 1 good map is better than having 32 crappy ones.

I was 14 when I have started doing Doom mods.

Now I'm 28, I did a lot of mods, even serious ones, but never got a Cacoward for any finished mod.

And I feel that I didn't get it because the reason is I'm not talented at all.

Don't give up, for you it's just 4 years.

P.S.: I don't like to play 32-Map wads, do a small amount instead, it's even better. Quality over quantity, like @ChippiHeppu said.

I was 16 when I finished my first 32-map megawad (one of only two I've made) and it didn't turn out particularly good. I'll let you in on something that I hope I won't have to say to you again: it's about the quality of the maps, not the quantity.

thank you I will keep that in my mind

This means you're still in time to realize that 32 map megawads are a relic of the past, and few bother with playing them any longer.

A megawad isn't an end goal in Doom mapping. Many excellent mappers go their entire carreer without making a megawad. What matters more is the quality of the map rather than the amount of maps you put out.

What you experience is teenage angst and is something every teenager goes through. You aren't useless, just not ready to release a big project like a megawad. Release individual maps and harvest the feedback you get on them.

I have a feeling this is untrue.

Bruh I haven't made a map in years, let alone a megawad. And yet I'm still here, doing what I enjoy doing. You shouldn't need to force yourself to make stuff that you don't have the motivation to make. Do what you actually want to do.

You know, you'll always feel too old.

But comparing yourself to others is the truly useless thing not you. There'll always be people who are better than you and people who are worse than you (although most people like to only focus on the former). But it does not matter.

And especially about creative things. Johannes Brahms finished his first symphony when he was in his 40s. Why? Because he felt in the previous 15 years while he was working on it, that it was never good enough. (This does not mean that if you are over 40 you are doomed!)

So just take it lightly, (I know it's easy to say and impossible to do, but you probably have other things to worry about,) try not to feel bad about doing things in your own pace.

He just gave an opinion lmao, its not like he threw a bold blanket statement on why megawads aren't relevant anymore.

Kinda weird to state something so obviously controversial then the instant someone disagrees you say WeLl ThAt'S jUsT yOuR oPiNiOn

You shouldn't feel old at 17 for goodness sakes, my eldest daughter is nearly 8 years older than you! I made my first maps 4-5 months ago just to try it out, nothing worth posting here, I made them specifically for my kids as they were finding most Pwads too hard, they like blasting hordes of formers with plasma guns and finding secrets so that's what I made for them. Just had a baby boy 6 weeks ago and moved back to UK so no time for mapping right now, but when things settle down a bit I hope to perhaps make a map or 2 for some community projects.

I love megaWads but small episodes and single maps are great too. Think a making a megaWad solo would take me years, I'd rather find out it people actually enjoyed my maps before even attempting such a thing.

It helps that UMAPINFO is a thing nowadays

so we have secret exits on any map in boom wads

so you can make a small episode with a secret exit to a secret map on one of the maps

Don't feel bad about being unable to make a full megawad, because that's an undertaking not a lot of people can accomplish. And like others in the thread have said already, you have a lot more years ahead of you to build your skills than most, being 17 and all.

Approximately 3,377,270,000 were born between 1981 (more or less the earliest you could be born to have a chance to start working on a megawad at age 13) and 2005 (probably the year of birth if are 17 today) [source]. Off the top of my head, the only two people out of those 3,377,270,000 I can who have completed a megawad by the age of 17 are MTrop (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/dot) and AD_79 (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/50monstr).

They are the 0.00000000059219429%.

(please don't nitpick this high-effort shitpost)

I do like the 10-15 mapsets nowadays but, that's mainly due to time constraint. There has (and probably will be in the future) been great 32-maps megawads released in recent years though. One of which (valiant) happens to be my favorite megawad to date.

But heh, that's just like, my opinion man.

OP, let me tell you something. I've been playing Doom since I was about 5. I'm 31 now. I only really started actually mapping two years ago because COVID happened and I got back into Doom after being away from the scene for a few years. One of my big regrets is that I didn't take up mapping much earlier, as now I'm playing catchup with a decade's worth or more of community evolution and experience. I didn't get to put all my youthful energy and anger into creating. Now there's a good chance I'd have gotten frustrated and RQed at this hobby a ton of times, as back then I was a lot less mature and a lot more impatient, but the point still stands IMO.

So go map, and don't worry about making a megawad.

No idea why your response has to be this petty. I don't think they are a relic of the past, i see enough megawads get released, enough to disagree with your latter statement.

I've been mapping near daily for 13 years and i almost never finish or release anything. But I don't feel its a waste of my time because I'm having fun doing it. That's what matters to me.

Plus honestly, you should worry about releasing small mapsets and honing your craft before making a full megawad. I'd rather play a small set of good maps than a long set of mediocre rushed maps.

I definitely side with Red here but let's not hijack a perfectly fine thread.

I lol'd

As for OP, dude I feel you. I've been mapping two years and only have a handful of levels out. That said, it doesn't matter. This is no contest, it's a joyful expression of creativity. Comparison kills enjoyment. Someone I greatly respect once told me "every musician has an inferiority complex due to Mozart." @Sena made a funnier comment about that but it's true. In the Doom scene we have a bunch of amazingly talented mappers and musicians so it can feel hard. But it doesn't matter, this is a hobby and making anything is better than nothing. Hope you feel alright.

Back when I was 16 and started learning DEU, I made one or two silly maps, then I started already dreaming of my first Doom 1 project episode with 9 maps, with realistic maps and the end of a level will be the beginning of next in visual context. I was dreaming about it, maybe tried to make a map and burned by visplane overflow. Much later I wanted to revisit it, I did few lame Doom 2 maps. Anyway,. I am 42 years old and still haven't made my single episode (that's a lie, I made one or two episode 1 joke wads), let alone megawad. It's too much for a single person although there are exceptions, but most will be happy to contribute in a community project.
