JustAthel Posted December 19, 2022 It's not as shocking as it may seem :p Dialup was a huge thing back in the day, which is why you might have seen some references to bosses deathmatching you when quitting the game. I believe it was so notoriously played in offices that in a couple of cases, the businesses had to cut the internet to get their employees back to work. I'd have to look up the story, but that's also around the time when DWANGO became a thing. Fun fact--in (I believe) the registered(or is it shareware?) version of Doom (the original release with 3 episodes), there's a multiplayer demo of E1M5! Which makes sense--why else would there be multiple player starts and deathmatch starts in levels? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted December 19, 2022 We have video evidence of multiplayer Doom being played before the game was released, even before it was finished, and yet even before a proper deathmatch mode was implemented. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Shareware version was released before December 1993 as far as I am concered. Edit: Google does not say when shareware version was released. Google only mentions the date 10th December 1993. Isn't it full 3 episode release instead of shareware? Edited December 19, 2022 by Technicolor 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted December 19, 2022 December 10 was the first public release of shareware Doom. There were private releases of beta versions to the press and external playtesters and the like before, but the first public release was the day that is still celebrated as Doomsmas ever since, with the Cacowards and other such festivities. https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Timeline#1993 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

ImproversGaming Posted December 19, 2022 I remember playing Doom with a friend by connecting two computers together via serial link. The year is fuzzy but it was early. Might not seem like much of a deal but we had to physically move the computers to each others houses at the weekends to play together. The monitors were huge - no not wide, deep - big old CRTs and the computer was very large and heavy. It took up the back set of the car. I don't even remember the internet being a viable option at the time. Fun times... Spoiler 2 hours ago, Technicolor said: Really? How? zokum Posted December 20, 2022 Doom was playable with an IPX network on 10.12.1993. Serial and modem support was released 17.02.1994. Dwango (bbs) and iFrag (tcp/ip) came later. Fan-made parallel port support also exists as well as special drivers for up to 4 players with serial/modem cables only. You could also use different serial or ipx network drivers that added features. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
DavidN Posted December 20, 2022 Yes - also worth mentioning is that the 17th Feb 1994 release also introduced the ability to play Doom on an IPX network without obliterating the whole rest of your network :) https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Broadcast_packet_meltdown 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
