I don't suppose it is with Internet?

Yes, it was with Internet with a Phone Cable Conector.

It's not as shocking as it may seem :p Dialup was a huge thing back in the day, which is why you might have seen some references to bosses deathmatching you when quitting the game. I believe it was so notoriously played in offices that in a couple of cases, the businesses had to  cut the internet to get their employees back to work. I'd have to look up the story, but that's also around the time when DWANGO became a thing.

Fun fact--in (I believe) the registered(or is it shareware?) version of Doom (the original release with 3 episodes), there's a multiplayer demo of E1M5! Which makes sense--why else would there be multiple player starts and deathmatch starts in levels?

We have video evidence of multiplayer Doom being played before the game was released, even before it was finished, and yet even before a proper deathmatch mode was implemented.

Shareware version was released before December 1993 as far as I am concered.

Edit:

Google does not say when shareware version was released.

Google only mentions the date 10th December 1993. Isn't it full 3 episode release instead of shareware?

December 10 was the first public release of shareware Doom. There were private releases of beta versions to the press and external playtesters and the like before, but the first public release was the day that is still celebrated as Doomsmas ever since, with the Cacowards and other such festivities.

I remember playing Doom with a friend by connecting two computers together via serial link. The year is fuzzy but it was early. Might not seem like much of a deal but we had to physically move the computers to each others houses at the weekends to play together. The monitors were huge - no not wide, deep - big old CRTs and the computer was very large and heavy. It took up the back set of the car. I don't even remember the internet being a viable option at the time. Fun times...

Doom was playable with an IPX network on 10.12.1993. Serial and modem support was released 17.02.1994. Dwango (bbs) and iFrag (tcp/ip) came later. Fan-made parallel port support also exists as well as special drivers for up to 4 players with serial/modem cables only.

You could also use different serial or ipx network drivers that added features.
