Obsidian Posted December 22, 2022 Why am I doing this? Because someone has to, that's why! Next year marks the 30th anniversary of Doom and I have no doubt that we'll see some of the big guns getting pulled out to celebrate it, so this thread will be used to collate all the projects nominated between now and the next Cacowards. If you're new to the process, here's some tips: If there's a piece of work that you find particularly awesome, mention it in here! Make sure you include the name of the project, the author and a download link The purpose of this thread is merely for people to mentionate projects, so try and keep discussion to a minimum Bear in mind that winners are not chosen by the amount of times a project is mentioned or the amount of reactions it has accrued: the Cacoward judges will use this thread to see what releases are notable, but the final decisions are made at their discretion Please do not nominate your own project There is a small grace period at the end of each year for the sake of giving as many releases as possible their due consideration: as such, any projects released after about mid-November of 2022 are eligible for the 2023 Cacowards Happy Dooming! 32 Share this post Link to post
Maribo Posted December 23, 2022 Uroboros, made for the adventurous and masochistic modern doomer. There are some moments in this wad that you just have to experience for yourself, especially the way that the Scroll of Karnak fits into the way you're supposed to play. 7 Share this post Link to post
Mr Masker Posted December 23, 2022 Here's to another year of great content! 2 Share this post Link to post

I was just thinking that I would mention Uroboros as soon as the mentionation thread appeared. The progression is just the sort of wild experimentation I was hoping the adoption of UMAPINFO would enable. It's not quite like anything I've seen, and it's hard to explain without straight up quoting the thread, so I would encourage everybody to click the link and see for themselves. The WAD's not just a tech demo or a one-trick pony either - the maps themselves are distinctive and well-designed, and would easily hold up on an individual basis. The unconventional framing, however, elevates Uroboros to something greater than the sum of its parts. 2 Share this post Link to post

LadyMistDragon Posted February 3, 2023 Liminal Doom! It'll probably end up with silver if anything but the atmosphere here has to be noted. 4 Share this post Link to post
Serathis Posted February 5, 2023 (edited) + 1 to Liminal Haven't felt a mapset be this oppressive and suffocating since Unloved. Edited February 5, 2023 by Serathis 1 Share this post Link to post
Deadwing Posted February 8, 2023 (edited) Tetanus: Fantastic atmospheric wad with superb MIDIs, visuals and gameplay. Edited February 8, 2023 by Deadwing 11 Share this post Link to post
thelamp Posted March 1, 2023 Deadliest Dem(o(li)ti)on by Scypek is visually distinctive, fast paced action packed gameplay, very challenging, and the dehacked changes left me wondering how to hell some of it was even done. Deserves to be in the running for a caco! 3 Share this post Link to post
Somniac Posted March 3, 2023 Some highlights of the year so far for me: Tetanus - still need to finish this actually, but what I've played so far has been fantastic and hugely entertaining. Combat feels tightly calibrated, there are devious (but never unfair) traps to keep you on your toes, the level design is super tasty and the "rusty tropics" aesthetic feels really fresh and original. Boomer: Beyond Vanilla - haven't finished this either, but I loved it from the first moment. Full of detail without getting too visually busy, really nice architecture and layouts and engaging combat. The Cognition Engine - a unique map that feels like being inside a decaying monstrosity of flesh and computers that's out to get you. Not sure I've seen a theme like this before, but it pulled me in and I had to see what happened. Great atmosphere and some intense combat moments. The Smoking Dog - This one seems a little underrated in comparison but I loved it, an awesome set of classic styled vanilla maps with fantastic architecture, memorable soundtrack and fun gameplay, by one of the contributors to Alien Vendetta. What more can you ask for? UAC Nukeage Solutions, LLC - Big classic style map that makes great use of vanilla textures, great use of space and a pleasing layout with nice detailing. Hell on Earth Shareware - The concept behind this is great, and the levels themselves live up to the promise. Feels classic but modern, like it fell out of a parallel universe where Doom II did have a shareware episode, just one that was bigger and more challenging. There's still stuff I need to check out too, like Morior Invictus which looks like a really cool vintage-style vanilla megawad, and Liminal Doom, among others. I think there will be many more highlights this year as we're off to a great start already. 7 Share this post Link to post
DRON12261 Posted March 4, 2023 PSX DooM: The Forgotten Chapter by @Dantosking. A great megawad (13 maps) stylized for DOOM PSX. I recommend everyone to try it. 3 Share this post Link to post
philcul Posted March 6, 2023 Everyone should take a look at... ...a fantastic little mapset (Boom format) which is strongly inspired by Crumpets with mostly smaller levels that contain weird landscapes, geometry that's interesting to look at and creative combat puzzles! 0 Share this post Link to post

Terrcraft Posted March 10, 2023 MyHouse.wad for machaward and dootaward not even fucking kidding 5 Share this post Link to post
Not Jabba Posted March 10, 2023 Myhouse.wad is the kind of map you wait 30 years for the privilege of playing, and the kind of map that could only exist after 30 years of waiting. I doubt there will be much, if anything, that tops it this year. 35 Share this post Link to post
Catpho Posted March 10, 2023 +1 to the above The entire write-up for MyHouse (Gold, HM, or whatever) should just be a copy paste of the OP, just to preserve the effect. 6 Share this post Link to post
Breezeep Posted March 11, 2023 Ditto to Jabba's post. That was pretty much a once in a lifetime experience. Truly incredible from an artistic standpoint. 3 Share this post Link to post
TJG1289 Posted March 12, 2023 +1 to Myhouse.was as well. Once of the most artistic, interesting, mechanically great, and atmospheric WADs ever made. 4 Share this post Link to post
