which was the better fps sequel? halo 2 or doom eternal

Recommended Posts

Halo 2 - it took the first game and expanded upon it in a natural way, in terms of overall polish, plot, characters, graphics, singleplayer and multiplayer gameplay, and was an improvement in nearly every way over Combat Evolved. Doom Eternal is a sequel to a reboot that added an unnecessary and ridiculous plot, made controversial changes to overall gameplay, had a poor multiplayer experience, uneven DLC, and filler platforming sections. I like Eternal, but Halo 2 does everything a sequel should do. If you enjoyed Combat Evolved, I can bet good money you'll be happy with Halo 2. Doom Eternal is a crapshoot: plenty of Doom 2016 fans perfer 2016, and a lot of classic Doom fans just don't care for it at all.

Sorry to be a franchise traitor, but the winner for me is Halo 2 by a landslide. It's not a straightforward thing though - Halo 2 is only the second game in the Halo franchise. Doom Eternal is the latest entry in an old and established franchise that went in many directions since 1993. A more direct comparison would be Halo 2 vs Doom 2 - Doom 2 is extremely important in terms of its impact on the modding scene, but overall I think most people would agree that it wasn't an incredible sequel. It's DOOM but with more enemy types, a new weapon, and maps of debatable quality. So Halo 2 still wins.

will see how well eternal has aged 18 years later. could be outdone by later games in the series, or its successors.

I will have to agree with this, Halo 2 took everything that was great about Halo, and expanded on it. And really the best thing about Halo was playing co-op, convincing your friend to man the machine gun on a Warthog, and then bailing out at the last second before you drove off a cliff. And the ensuing shoulder punches. The base game was extremely boring, especially in single player, but Halo 2 added so much more variety to the combat and level design. It wasn't just copy and pasted corridors for the entire game.

Doom: Eternal, well I still haven't finished it. And I don't know if I ever will. It felt like a combination of Devil May Cry and Street Fighter. It's all arena combat, you go into a new area, you get locked in, and then you do combos to kill the enemies. It doesn't feel like a Doom game at all, it's just a bunch of acrobatics and figuring out the combinations to defeat enemies. And maybe I'm just getting too old, but I really don't think I would've enjoyed the gameplay when I was a teenager either. I enjoyed Doom 2016 to a degree, I did finish it, but after doing so I never felt a reason to replay it. It's boring, it's always going to be the exact same experience every time I play it; and I did try to replay it several times. But it's just so damn boring.

In my humble opinion, id took the wrong direction with Doom. But sales figures and user reviews will say that I'm completely wrong. I still don't think the "Doom Comic" should've been the basis for a new Doom game, and The Elder Scrolls shouldn't have been a plot inspiration.

Halo 2 was great fun in its day, that's a game which was made for co-op. I recently started replaying Combat Evolved and I'm not convinced it still holds up as a solo experience.

I like the new Dooms, but I don't love them. The comment above about it being too arena based is spot on. I did appreciate the complexity of movement though. I just don't jive with this whole Doom Slayer superhero business.

I grew up with all the halo games (yes even Halo 4) i still enjoy halo to this day, it's my childhood.

Doom eternal on the other hand, i did like it but after beating it and not finish the second DLC i don't really care anymore. I rather play / make my own maps for the older doom games then replay Eternal again.

Halo 2

The marketing campaign for that game was crazy nuts

They had the Breaking Bejamin music, they had the Halo 2 condom, they had everything. What did Eternal even have

Halo 2 without a doubt. It improved on so much from the first game and offered a great experience on its own. Doom Eternal had a much more mixed reception than Halo 2. I don’t think it was the sequel everyone was wanting after 2016.

I feel like this is very much an apples and oranges situation.

While System Shock 2 is definitely a legendary title (minus the rushed and disappointing last third) that I enjoyed much more than its predecessor, it is a very different game from the original System Shock and its connections to the first game are tenuous as best (outside of SHODAN, of course), much like Doki Doki Panic/Super Mario Bros 2 is to the original Super Mario Bros. Or rather in this case, System Shock 1 is more like Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss while System Shock 2 is more like Thief: The Dark Project.

As far as superior direct sequels go, my money is on titles like Borderlands 2, Aliens Versus Predator 2 and Left 4 Dead 2.

Let me rephrase it: I have played Doom Eternal. I did like it, but the replay for me got stale because it doesn't have what other games have. I mean sure Battlemode is great but it gets so boring fight sweaty try hards and having them brag about how go they are.

Halo on the other hand has a great multiplayer sense, Halo has multi-player, has maps that are fun and they have forge where you can make your own dumb / whacky stuff.

Call me old school but after beating Doom Eternal and TAG pt. 1. I just lost the joy of newer doom.

Despite concerns with both, despite their different circumstances in their own respective series and development, I'm inclined to give it to Halo 2. Rocky beat me to the punch in saying this, but Bungie was in a position where they could do nothing but improve upon the first Halo. Depending on what you got out of 2016, Eternal's improvements feel like they came at a cost.

...Now, if the question was between Halo 4 and Eternal - Eternal no contest. But I can see why'd compared Halo 2 and what is essentially "Doom 2016...2".

DE turned Doom 2016 into Rock Paper Scissors and enabled the worst parts of the fandom to scream "YOU JUST SUCK AT IT/DON'T GET IT!" at anyone who was justified in feeling annoyed by the gameplay changes.

halo 4 was awesome. the multiplayer and Armour Customization was sooo cool to me as a kid. i liked the flood infected mode and how creepy the flood looked. definitely was far better than halo 5.

Someone already said Borderlands 2, but I'll say it again. Borderlands 1 was so god-damn boring to play for me the first time I tried it, but Borderlands 2 clicked with me right away. While I didn't beat all the DLCs, I beat the main story and like half of the DLCs. Meanwhile, with 1... I quit a quarter into the main story.

As for the Doom Eternal or Halo 2 thing, I've not played Halo 2 but well... Doom Eternal was great when I first played it, but I didn't really play it since and I did have some issues. The third person cutscenes felt out of place, and the stuff about the Doom Slayer being some kind of god to the people on Earth just felt... off. Like I can see the justification, but it just comes across as this power fantasy where all the people of earth worship you and you're the super cool awesome Slayer and everyone wants to be your friend. There's some other stuff but I forgot those.

I only got Ancient Gods Part 1 and the enemies introducing in that were just not fun, and tedious to fight. The ghost forces you to use a specific mod for a specific weapon in a way that doesn't give you any satisfaction, and the angel thing makes you wait around for its weak point to shoot it, screwing with the flow of gameplay. So overall, I don't think Doom Eternal is one of the best FPS games of all time or anything crazy like it, it has its flaws but it's fine for what it is.

Team Fortress 2 is definitely better - or at the very least more memorable - than its predecessor.

tf2 is insanely iconic. even people who've never played the game know the characters from it far too well. i cannot imagine the meme landscape without its existence.

It does not help that Borderlands 1 originally had a serious tone, only for Gearbox to change their mind and add in comedy. I still find it to be an enjoyable enough experience, but yeah, it has not aged very well compared to Borderlands 2 and especially 3.

Halo 2, mainly because it's hard to get entirely behind the over-the-top nature of Doom Eternal in a way that actually allows it to be said that it's better. Halo 2 is not as good as the first game, imo, but it also feels like a more appropriate step-up at the same time.

That's a very hot take on the Halo franchise, I didn't know you felt that way about Halo 5. And that bit about Doom 3 was just so well thought out. Truly a relevant, meaningful and worthwhile post. Not sure on that bit about the US presidency though.

Why is that?

I just liked the environmental variety and flow of the game a little bit better. Yes, Halo 2 certainly brings on the challenge a little more and adds quite a few things but I'm not certain that works entirely to its benefit
