SplitScreen Doom Source Ports ?

Recommended Posts

Doom's official port comes with splitscreen, and can be side loaded with almost any vanilla/limit removing mapset you desire.

As he explained, it does work with FreeDoom and other stuff - just throw it in My Games/Doom/WADS (I think) and load it up.

The only other option I’m aware of is running multiple instances of LZDoom on one system and using different inputs.

Edward is referring to the Classic Doom Unity port. I had no idea the PC version of that port had splitscreen, I'm pretty stoked to try it out! Should be great for classic Vanilla co-op and DM! (I thought that feature was limited to the console ports which you of course have to pay for.)

Eternity Engine had a splitscreen fork (By Edward in fact), but I don't think it's maintained.

There's a ZDoom fork called SSZDoom, but I don't think it's still being maintained either.

Although usable Windows builds are ancient by now, Doom Legacy does have this feature:

Doom Legacy 1.42 has split screen and still works well on Win7, and has vanilla mod compatibility and most Boom compat as well. You can use the launcher to set +splitscreen 1 and +deathmatch 3, and also load custom wads. The big problem is that it’s top and bottom splitscreen, not side to side.. I’m not aware of any “release ready” source ports out there with this option other than the Unity one.

Heres the Legacy download: https://doomshack.org/~doomkid/Utilities/legacy142.zip

AFAIK this is the only place to find 1.42 now!

I ranted about the lack of splitscreen ports a decade ago (jesus it's flown by), and although we have gotten better on that front in the years since, I still think splitscreen is a feature that would benefit most ports, specifically the ones with any kind of focus on mutliplayer.

I don't know about Freedoom given it's a full IWAD, but generally speaking most vanilla mapsets work:

You sure can. Just find the "C:\Users\<your name here>\Documents\My Games\Doom\WADS" folder, I'm 99% sure that's where it'll be (haven't used it in over a year, lol).

It reportedly varies from person to person. For me it's Documents\Saved Games\id Software\

I'm genuinely surprised you did not know this. I could swear we've talked about it before. :V

We almost certainly did. If I talk to 8 people about 8 subjects on Doomworld over the course of a day, it's almost guaranteed that I will only remember the 3 least important/enlightening of those conversations.. D'oh.

We can't see what you see, so you'll need to describe your problem in more detail.

Just navigate to it. You know how to go to your C drive, right? Go to that, then go to Users, etc etc.

(And no I can't record a video of my navigating my own hard-drive. Privacy and NDA issues with that one.)

Make sure you've run the game so the folders are created. As a cheat if you're still unsure, download the addon Anomaly Report from ingame and then do a search for the file "16", and that'll show you where the addons folder is.

Stick it in the /WADs folder. It will then appear in the installed addons list.

Couldn't say, sorry.

Never mind i figured it out but why does the volume mute when i plug in the controller ?

do you know how to fix that ?

Your controller has sound output. You'll need to either unplug the headphones from it, disable it in the sound devices or change the default sound device back.
