The Heroic Games launcher can handle GOG and Epic games with WINE/Proton, I don't really use anything from GOG and Epic so I'm not the best person to showcase it, but you could check it out. If I remember correctly Lutris also supports other launchers, although these ones are launched through WINE.

They're only CDPR, a really small company that makes excellent titles out of the goodness of their hearts because they are really nice people who don't care about money, they only care about their fans. This isn't different from the Past, you bought the Licence to use a Copy, the only Difference was the Way how the Copy is transported, back then via Disc, now via Internet.  Back then they weren't able to "block" your Disc, nowadays they can block the Program via Update.  Thats why i like Gog

Strangly enough, a few Days ago the description of Games was in Italian and they don't offer it neither ^^ (Store was set to german).

 

I have a small "TV-PC" where i put Linux on.

There is a Launcher like Program called Lutris.

You can log into your Gog Account via Lutris, it lists all your Library and download the Games from there.

It has some nice preset Options for Windows Games and it seems you can extract Files from Dos Games, in Case you have a preset Dosbox like me (but i haven't tested this Feature).

For GOG on Linux, Heroic Launcher is the one you want. It can replace some other launchers too, with some tweaking.

Yes, that is what I meant. Ever since the beginning of home gaming, you are buying a right to play the game, not own it.

While Steam has removed titles for various reasons, past buyers are always allowed to redownload the game again. I personally am unaware of a title being removed and prevented from being downloaded ever again. Correct me if I am wrong. Also, I believe even if this did happen you would still be able to install if you made your own backups, no different to physical media.

idk what this says about me, society, doomworld etc. Probably literally nothing, BUT because it has never been nor never will be relevant again, I just want to say that I have never used Steam or GOG.. EDIT: Scratch that, I do have an account for both, one of which I used for like 6 seconds to buy Doom and test out the Unity port! Beyond that, though..

 

Obviously I love Doom and video games as a concept, but beyond Doom and old-era Nintendo/Sega-type shit, this thread made me realize how far removed I am from both gaming culture and gaming software "as is" circa 2022. I'm happy to be a bootlegging scumbag stuck in 1998, gotta assume never buying games (and hardly ever playing them outside of Doom) has saved me a few pennies over the decades.

 

Not saying I'm free from expensive hobbies.. Oh lord no. But, I'm content to be completely detached from this aspect of the cultural zeitgeist.

The main reason I use Steam is for the Big Picture Mode - it's optimized for controllers, and even has premade controller bindings for games that are normally a pain in the ass to set up with a controller. I have problems with my hands and can't play games with a keyboard and mouse, so it's great for me - I play PC games on my TV and my kb&m are out of reach, but Big Picture Mode pretty much turns Steam into a console - you can even press a button to bring up a virtual keyboard when you need it. Before Big Picture Mode was a thing, I hated playing PC games because it was always a hassle. I can't remember the last time I bought something on Steam though.

Well GOG appears to have some of the games I would like to play such as ultrakill, dusk, dread templar, viscerafest, forgive me father, etc... But it doesn't have the likes of selaco, minecraft, or call of duty (why I would want to play a modern COD game I have no idea)

 

If I ever get a paypal IF they allow paypal payments I would be able to play those particular retro fps gems if that makes sense...

 

Seems like GOG's the winner here folks...

I'm curious @DELTA256, given Steam has been the defacto way to buy and play PC games for coming on 20 years, are you asking this because you're very new to PC gaming and aren't sure what's kosher or not, or very old to PC gaming and predate Steam?
