In memory of Magikal

Magikal aka Kevin Reay is a mapper who designed maps for wads like community chest and the nightmare speedmapping compilation. His maps were hard complex and huge. Some do not like his maps and while i have mixed opinions of his maps i love how much he experimented. I know there already is a thread about this but i wanted to remind people. His passing was may 20, 2003 before CC was released. The final wad was made for community chest as map 29 "Citadel at the edge of eternity" He may rest in peace

I always found it interesting that this guy was a well-known, highly regarded person in his field. Award winning, in fact. It makes me wonder what's going on behind some of these usernames. Maybe there's some famous actors or musicians who just like making Doom levels in their spare time. Personally, I'm secretly Liam Neeson. 

 

j/k lol - but yeah, Magikal's work was definitely the result of a singular, unfettered vision. Whatever you may feel about it, is there really anything quite like CC MAP29?

I understand that the dead should be honored, and I do indeed think that Reay should be honored for his contributions to the Doom community. But this thread is kinda outta nowhere, no? I feel maybe a "20-years-after" thread on the day of his passing would have been a bit more impactful.

It is kind of random, but I've never heard about this before even though I've played one of his maps. Unfortunately, suicide is a common occurence on internet forums, as many of the people on them tend to be more likely to be struggling with depression. As one of those people, it doesn't give me a hopeful feeling to read that even a highly successful and popular person couldn't find another way out. The only way I can look at it is "I can do better than this guy". Harsh, but I know that's what he would want other people to think.

 

Oh, by the way, I'm Scarlet Johansson. No simping please, I'm a busy person.

I had recently played cc and i saw that nobody had mentioned him in awhile

So... He died 19 years ago?

I mean, RIP this guy, but I don't understand why making this thread in first place, if theres a memorial post 19 years before. It would be more correct in May 20, when his 20th year aniversary. (idk?)

I'm sure you mean no harm, but this thread comes off as "I just heard of this guy and I need to let everyone know that I heard of him." The reason you don't see much talk is that people have already had nearly 20 years for that. There was some talk when MtPain27 released the Dean of Doom episode for Community Chest (which is how I first heard of Magikal myself).

 

While we're on the subject, does anyone know what complevel Magikal's maps "Industrial" and "Catastrophe" should be played with? The text file for Catastrophe mentions Boom so I would guess cl9 for that, but I have no idea whether Industrial would function properly in cl2 or cl9. Seems that Magikal himself used Doom Legacy.

This is no promise, but if I can remember to, I might yoink the torch to make the 20-year memorial thread. (Honestly kinda crazy that the Doom community is so old that a content creator died before I was even born.)

It's okay, personally I don't suspect in any way that you made this thread for attention or anything like that at all. The worst I can say about it is that it's a little random. Just a tip - if you're making a thread about something that already happened and has already been discussed, that's okay. Just try to make it a little unique or give people something to discuss. For example, you could go into depth about what you liked or disliked about his maps. Just a little more than a couple sentences, you know? I actually am glad that you made this thread, because I never knew about this. Catastrophe is perfectly playable on cl9 and should be on cl2 as well. There are some stuck enemies but as far as I can tell, that's a mapping error, not a compatibility issue. Industrial is very different, but much more hilarious, the whole map is completely playable even on cl2 from the beginning to the end, it's just not finishable. If you don't want to deal with Legacy, I recommend GZDoom on any compatibility other than strict.
