The Ultimate Doom poster -Restored- (Now also Doom 2!)

This looks incredible, man! Even just looking at it on my screen, it's like I could reach out and touch it; running my fingers along it and feeling every little groove on the logo and the notches on Doomguy's armour. Great stuff! :^)

I still see the ghost of the dark stripe -- a bit darker on the greeble inside the letters, a bit lighter on the tiles on the letter's exterior. The tile pattern is broken, too -- it looks like it was an area cut-and-pasted over the dark stripe, instead of just brightening the affected area to undo the darkening.

You're right. I updated the file, now the dark stripe should be completely removed like it never was there in the first place. I also fixed a weird artefact in marine's chest. There are minor blemishes from the scan, probably where the creasing lines of the posters where, but it's too much work and barely noticeable.

This is incredible. I crave the highest-possible definition scans of all things DOOM, but you've gone above and beyond here. Thanks!

Thank you. I think we should try to get people with original boxes and posters to scan their stuff and make an effort to restore and collect everything in high resolution. I can do any restoration work needed with Photoshop.

I also recreated this poster tonight. I had to upscale the original art, clean artefacts, pick the id and doom logos from the Ultimate Doom poster and somehow salvage the "II" from other picture (not as high resolution as I'd wanted).

Now it's ready to be printed at 50x70cm, 300ppp. Enjoy!

Download it here.

These are incredible, man!

Here I have the highest quality scans (that I know of) of the Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, and Final Doom big boxes - the versions that come with both DOS Doom and Doom95, since they make a "3 part set" and will run on both ancient and modern computers with little hassle:

Because the boxes these images were scanned from were damaged and because my scanner isn't perfect the quality could be better, but like I said, I think they're (presently) the best version available.

Your work is so good that I wonder if you'd consider doing this for the "clean" (no logo, no brands etc) versions of the Doom and Doom 2 art? Below are the highest quality versions I currently know of, I'm sure you could work wonders on 'em:

Thank you man! These scans are incredible, just what I was talking about. It's super important to preserve this stuff, you made a great effort scanning all of this.

Yes, I found that thread while I was looking for high res scans. Very interesting. Now that we have the boxes, CDs and inserts would be great to have a really high quality scan of the box art (from posters or other sources). Meanwhile, check my first post, I updated it with links to what I managed to restore from those "clean" art pictures you provided.

For the Doom 1 art, I had to merge it with the Ultimate Doom poster scans, because the original image is too low resolution to salvage much detail. So you can see that the borders of the image are more blurry than the center. I certainly could do it better spending more hours into it, but I don't think it's worth it: the goal should be to access to a higher resolution source.

For Doom 2 art: I upscaled it the same way I did for the poster (it's the same image) and cleaned it a bit from dust of the original scan. This one is fine, but it loses some detail on the texture of brush strokes.

Anyway, they're good enough to print a large poster but I'll keep looking for higher resolution base files.

EDIT:

ORIGINAL POST:

Recently I searched for a Doom poster to print. Amazon, Ebay, Etsy and other stores are filled with Doom posters of doubtful procedence so I decided to search myself for a high resolution scan to print.

To my surprise there aren't any good quality scans and the best one had tons of JPG compression artefacts and an ugly black stripe on top of the Doom logo. Thankfully I was able to clean it up and now it's of decent quality for a large print.

Artefacts removed and resolution doubled:

Black stripe removed:

You can download it here (update 1.1 version). I don't know how to upload it to idgames or other directories (truth is I didn't even try, so I'll later look into it). It's on .TIF format without destructive compression, let me know if you need any other file format.

UPDATE:

- Black stripe remnants completely removed.

- Weird artefact in marine's chest removed.

Happy printing!

Nice job Azafran !  I'd like to know if you might share the Doom 2 logo on a separate layer in high quality. I want to integrate it on another poster.  I have upscaled the DOOM 1 logo but can't find decent quality of the Doom 2 logo to upscale.  Thank you !
