Hell Gate Revamped

                                                                                                                          The Gates of Hell have been opened!

 

And here we go! This is the last unique level from the original Psx Doom, revamped for you!

It has been quite a long journey, but at least I had a ton of fun and I could refine my mapping skills in the process and learn more stuff :D

Apparently I left the shorter map for last, without knowing it, so it just took me 6 days to complete the job!

The original map doesn't offer much... so I basically had to create another "floor" to spice things up, cause, you know, it's just a squared arena with a couple of monster waves... that's it, I'm not joking! So I also had to tweak the pace, the waves, the traps and add the secrets (originally = 0...), but finally the map has been "upgraded"!

(It still just takes 4 minutes to complete...)

 

First things first, as always, thanks to PlayStation Doom TC for the original map, music and sounds! I also used the door sounds from Heretic cause they sound so much better for what I had in mind!

 

I have mixed feeling for this map: some positive, cause I usually like arena-like maps and hell maps, also it's a unique level and the last right before the Hell episode! Though it felt a bit "rushed" for a level, you know, 2 minutes for a level to be completed... well... not to mention that it felt like it almost break a bit the continuity, especially since you just find yourself in this tony keep with no doors or teleports behind you, weird.

My goal in fact has been to try to connect at least to the next map (Hell Keep), trying to create a proper Gate/Keep where the demons try to protect the entrance for their fortress.

I hope I've being able to make something good.

 

 

The usual (and more) changes I made to make it feel even better (hopefully):

  • Reduced Lost Souls hp.
  • DECALDEFS for torches, candles and health and armor bonuses.
  • Nightmare Spectre and Nightmare Imp.
  • New metal, white marble, red bricks flats and fence texture.
  • Breakable poles and lamps.
  • Archviles can be targeted by other monsters.
  • Wood door sounds.

 

Some of these changes has been directly ported from my megawad D.N.A., link below.

  • Port : GZDoom 4.10 (it uses GZDoom features, so it shouldn't be very compatible with anything else)
  • Map Format : UDMF
  • Map # : MAP01
  • Single Player : Designed for
  • Cooperative 2-4 Player : Player starts only (I actually cannot test it for cooperative, so I don't really know how it works)
  • Difficulty Settings : Every Difficulty Implemented 
  • Jump : Not Allowed
  • Crouch : Not Allowed
  • Freelook : Optional
  • Base : MAP16 PsxDoomTC
  • Build Time : 6 days
  • Editor(s) used : Ultimate Doom Builder, Slade3
