Catdark_ Posted January 22, 2023 the Strip Club scene and the movie had some of the worst humor and the truck scene was unintended 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
jupiter_ex Posted January 27, 2023 nothing, I loved it back then and will forever defend it. And I'm still waiting for someone to tell me how exactly they would have adapted a 2d sidescroller about jumping, stepping on turtles, and punching floating blocks with no dialog into a live action movie in 1993. The premise of the movie itself is that the game is a veiled retelling of the actual story that took place (the post credits scene, with the koopa cousins presenting the videogame based on the events of the movie) On 1/21/2023 at 12:05 AM, Jello said: Yeah, the real problem was the target audience for a Mario movie was around 5-11 years old. The kids who loved Mario Brothers at the time; and the movie had absolutely nothing to do with it... Good point though, never occurred to me. I myself was 13 when it came out and I thought the idea was what I explained above (the mario games being a cute fictionalization of the plot of the movie), loved the idea of dinosaurs having evolved in another dimension (using electric cars since there was no oil). Maybe it was better tailored for my age 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
insertwackynamehere Posted January 30, 2023 I liked it as a kid. I don't know if other people didn't like it as kids, but I have a hard time taking adults complaining about kids movies seriously so if it's just an early iteration of grownups incessantly complaining about children's media, then I think it speaks for itself 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
vyruss Posted January 30, 2023 I was part of the target age group for the movie and had a blast. My favorite part was the goombas' faces in general. That and King Koopa strongly suggesting Luigi's preference in beer should be Pabst Blue Ribbon as Heineken is not quite as good. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

CherubCorps Posted January 30, 2023 With all the craziness and bad story, you think that it would be a fun train wreck. Instead, it's just boring. Even with Bob Hoskins (Who is perfect as Mario) and Dennis Hopper, it's a snooze fest the entire way through. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Stupid Bunny Posted January 30, 2023 My friends and I watch it together a couple years back, and, yeah, it was pretty terrible, but part of me admires the completely insane take they made on Mario. Whoever it was who said "Mario needs to be in a grimy Ridley Scott dystopia where goombas are hideous pinheaded lizard men and King Koopa is Dennis Hopper doing a Donald Trump impression" deserves a fucking medal. It's completely off tone for Mario, but, really, is there a person on earth who believes that Super Mario Bros. is really well suited to any kind of film adaptation? But as much as I almost like it, it's got serious problems: the comedy is overwhelmingly unfunny, most of the film is way more boring than it should be and honestly all the grotesque monsters and snot dripping from everything make it an ugly and unpleasant experience. Fewer ceiling boogers and one or two rewrites and it might be one of my favorites. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
AutumnTheNintendoNerd Posted January 31, 2023 On 1/20/2023 at 10:05 PM, Jello said: A Mario movie shouldn't have been made, there was nowhere near enough content or 'lore' to justify it. And it shows. I disagree. In 1993? Yeah definitely, but we're 30 years removed from that now, and the lore has built immensely since then. I think this upcoming animated one will actually use it's source material effectively. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
SuperFreaksDev Posted January 31, 2023 There’s actually a fan site where you can find the extended cut and a few old scripts before heavy revisions. Turns out it was a Wizard of Oz styled movie at one point! Who knows how it got turned into a sci fi dystopia movie, but I’m kinda glad it did. http://www.smbmovie.com/ 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Master O Posted January 31, 2023 (edited) Bob Hoskins said that as a result of starring in this movie, he couldn't get roles for years after that. And that is from the guy who starred in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" Hoskins himself has many other film roles, most notably the very dark movies Mona Lisa and The Long Good Friday (British gangster movies).
