Why GZDoom, Why?

Recommended Posts

So recently I got a Roland SC-55 SoundFont for SLADE since I couldn't hear any Midi's inside. And ever since I imported the SoundFont into GZDoom, I have noticed that the sound is exactly the same as if you were using the default one. In SLADE, it sounds better, it has that slight amount of reverb and the instruments are a little different.

Is there a way to make it sound the same in GZDoom? or am I just going to have to live with it.

The one I'm talking about is the file attached below

SC-55.zip

You can turn on reverbs. They're off by default because a lot of people thought it made most MIDIs sound worse.

thank you, but this isn't exactly what I was talking about.

The soundfont I use in SLADE has some different instruments, and if you didn't notice, its a little more synth-ey. But when I import the exact same soundfont into doom, it just sounds like the default soundfont everyone has.

Are you sure you set it up correctly? GZDoom has a number of different synthesizers, and each one has its own independent settings. If you've set up Fluidsynth to use your new soundfont, but are actually using TiMidity++, then you will not hear any difference obviously.

Even gzdoom.sf2 sounds different in Slade compared to GZDoom. All reverb and chorus settings are turned to eleven in Slade.

Try these settings in GZDoom (fluidsynth):

snd_musicvolume 1.0

fluid_chorus true

fluid_chorus_speed 0.6

fluid_chorus_voices 6

fluid_gain 1.0

fluid_reverb true

fluid_reverb_level 0.8

fluid_reverb_roomsize 0.68

Sounds pretty close to Slade on my end.

P.S. Oh, and one more thing... It always appeared to me as if midis in Slade were playing at slightly faster pace than normal for some reason and that's why it might sound slightly different compared to the game midis. Maybe it's just me though.

Why does Slade screw up its sound with such ridiculous settings?

The ones in GZDoom are the result of several people weighing in and coming to the consensus that reverb and chorus are both best left disabled by default.

  • 8 months later...

I know this is an older thread but I searched and searched and couldn't find this info anywhere when I was having the issue of the soundfont always sounding like the default, so I hope this helps someone searching for a solution like I was. If you bought doom on steam and are trying to change the soundfont, the "unity edition" WAD will never change soundfonts, it must use recordings instead of MIDIs or something so the sound will never change. Use the "ultimate doom" WAD and it should work. maybe this is obvious info but I'm new to the whole doom scene and spent a long time getting frustrated at the soundfont not changing even though I was following the instructions verbatim and wasted alot of time trying to fiddle with settings and look up a fix.
