Is opening the map up in an editor mid-run to look at cheating?

Recommended Posts

Context: I'm doing table fills of Baron Door, ones of the rawest variety, but figured it wouldn't hurt to just fill out the table while doing my first playthrough.

I could not find all the secrets on Map 14 but did not want to replay the same map, as pretty as it was.  After killing all monsters, I Windows keyed out while the run was still running and opened the map in Ultimate Doombuilder to find the secrets.  I also opened up the ESC menu for half a second too at one point, which may be mildly dubious.

This isn't an ironman or anything, so I assume it's valid a la "looking at written notes", but I figured it is an interesting enough situation to bring up.

I think it's pretty well fit into this rule from current dsda:

Quote

Pausing - do not abuse pausing. Pausing during a long run because someone knocks on your door is fine. Pausing to analyze the situation is not.

Also btw personally I prefer a bit more polished tablefillers, at least with good secrets knowledge and some basic plan how better to fit them into the route )

I usually learn them all before doing a demo (sometimes I do nomo100 just to practice and feel productive at filling ;))

but i dont think its cheating, but maybe close to the line but on the safe side :D

As far as I'm aware the archive doesn't allow FDAs, so please at least play the map once to route it...

Yeah, I wouldn't know whether to necessarily call this cheating, but this is definitely discouraged. If you haven't routed a map, you should do so first before running it. That's not to say an unusually fast FDA won't be welcome to the archive, if it seems like it could be competitive, but in general, they're not meant for the archive. Obviously, I have no means of detecting how slow a particular run is before uploading, so functionally, everything will go in anyway, but it's still not preferable to submit stuff like that.

By the time you have a decent successful speedrun attempt, you'll already learn all the map(s), all their placements, monsters and secrets

I prefer a NoMo run to learn routing when filling tables. Pausing IL demos feels like cheating to me. Pausing to pee in the middle of a long ass D2All is a bit different though. If it feels dubious, it's probably for a reason. Just my two cents!

I can see the value of blind runs if people are doing them with commentary. That's entertaining.

Commentary-less blind runs are valuable to the map author if they need their work playtested.

I'm not sure I see the value of blind speedrun demos. I agree with most others that it would be good to route the run first.
