Large Cat Posted January 29, 2023 (edited) Welcome to the Limit Buffet! The buffet area has been set out and all of the little plaques are in place…but there’s nothing to eat! We need mappers and musicians to create meals for the community to enjoy. The latest build (as of Feb 16) of the project (with maps and music) can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oO31wHYo3GdqrLE3ElMYj_4qi57lmkyO/view?usp=share_link Feel free to play through what we have so far and give your feedback here in this thread! I'll pass your thoughts along to our dev team. You only need the snapshot above to play the wad; the resource link below is only for mappers. Included in the current snapshot: Spoiler I have placed the 11 currently submitted maps in the order they appear in the first 11 slots of the snapshot, and they have all received custom tunes made by our musicians (though some MIDI tracks will get moved around in the future). Currently, the maps and music are: MAP01 - Quick Draw by @RED77 (Music "why you locyrin" by @Large Cat) MAP02 - [Unnamed] by @tonytheparrot (Music "Selling Out" by @KeaganDunn) MAP03 - [Unnamed] by @Walter confetti (Music ""Four on the Floor" by @Large Cat) MAP04 - Surreal Survivalism by @Arsinikk (Music "Locrian but not Really" by @Arsinikk) MAP05 - Healthless by @HiRon (Music "Class Action Suit & Tie" by @DiR) MAP06 - Remote Facility by @Reelvonic (Music "Instrument of Hate" by @Arsinikk) MAP07 - The Unfair Abuse of Power by @scientifikgenius (Music "Toxic Dump Capital" by @ChippiHeppu) MAP08 - Dangerous Shipment by @SharkyChip (Music "Repetition Illegitimizes" by @KeaganDunn) MAP09 - Castle Zombieman's Secret by @SuyaSS (Music "Central Fissure" by @DiR) MAP10 - Doom is a 1D Game by @Ravendesk (Music "Something Awful" by @SuyaSS) MAP11 - Waterworld by @Eon Toad (Music "Anxiety Level Five" by @KeaganDunn) The latest version of the project resources (lb_tex.wad) can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Jj1FcVY_UUXLJDfiqy-JnUdb6g7sgjZ6/view?usp=share_link Join my Discord to participate! https://discord.gg/wKfNf7TjPC If you want to provide anything to the project, whether it be a map, midis, commentary, or your glowing presence, join the Discord server above! You may also provide feedback on the wad in this thread (I’ll update the above project link when release new snapshots), but if you wish to work on the project, please join the Discord server. Participants may claim only one map slot, but anyone can make as many MIDI’s as they like. See the rules section below for more details. Limit Buffet is a planned limit-removing community megawad made of maps which each adhere to their own strict limitations. Perhaps you’ve seen wads or community projects based on such mapping limitations: using only 100 linedefs, 64 vertices, or 30 monsters for example. Limit Buffet intends to sample a variety of these ideas, some traditional, some zany. Hopefully, we’ll also get some MIDI’s in this spirit as well. Read below for details. IWAD: Doom 2 Map Format: complevel 2 / limit-removing (ironic, I know) Target ports: Crispy Doom, DSDA Doom, PrBoom+, GZDoom Deadline: March 15, 2023 at 11:59 PM Yankee Time (UTC -12, the “slowest” timezone) Resources: The resource wad is at the top of the post. No other custom resources are permitted. For map submissions: Your map must adhere to your slot’s gimmick The map should take less than 10 minutes to complete on a blind run (some map restrictions will make this happen naturally) Your map must thoughtfully support the main three difficulty settings, and you must have four coop starts and four deathmatch starts (the map does not need to be fun in multiplayer) Difficulty-wise, I simply ask that you make sure at least one difficulty setting focuses on accessibility; you can make UV pretty punishing, but I'll ask you to be diligent when crafting a fun experience for HNTR as well When testing, please use at least one of our targeted ports other than GZDoom Make sure UV/HMP/HNTR/ITYTD Max (100% kills and secrets) is possible without requiring any arcane tricks (e.g. killing the archvile in Plutonia MAP27) Please design your map for play without jumping/crouching. The map should also be comfortable to play without freelook Use the following format for submitting maps: Map Title: Map Slot: Map Author: Tested Ports: Known Bugs: Comments: For midi submissions, you may either write a midi for general use or request a particular map to use your midi (with consent of the mapper). Tracks can be short for these short maps; 90 seconds should be sufficient, though longer tracks are great as well. When submitting, please just send the unpackaged midi file. Since I don’t have as many midi ideas, feel free to suggest your own musical limitations to compose with. Spoiler The above resource contains a small number of extra textures, as well as a few weapon and monster changes. The changes are as follows: The chainsaw now has four blades for four times the slashing power! Just don’t let this powerful beast toss you around too much… The pistol has been replaced with a much faster and perfectly accurate submachine gun, perfect for sniping! The chaingun has been overdriven to fire faster to compete with its new little sibling. The plasma gun now fires much more powerful bolts, though it takes longer to fire each one for a slightly higher overall damage output. The BFG is a little more expensive compared to the plasma, but its room-clearing capacity is all the same. And now for the new hostile forces you’ll be working with! Unfortunately, some concessions were made, and we had to drop the Icon of Sin and monster spawners to make room for our new friends and enemies. Flame Gunner These guys are tougher than your average humanoid, and they can unleash a whole volley of mancubus projectiles with a pull of the trigger! Baby Cacodemon Not fully matured, young cacos are much more aggressive than their adult counterparts, though they can’t take quite as much punishment as when they’re fully grown. Their greatest defense is their cute little face. Cybruiser A rocket launcher in one hand and a ball of plasma in the other, these guys can take a walloping and dish it out in kind. At least the thumps of their hooves give away their position. The hell knights also have sore throats, making them sound like barons of hell. The culture of these demons is also different: they will gladly attack archviles, but arachnotrons can cause as much friendly fire as they like with no retaliation. Spoiler Here are the current map gimmicks and map authors: @NinjaDelphox - MAP01 - Warm-up jaunt: map may not contain any monsters. @knifeworld - MAP02 - No holster: You may provide only one weapon pickup, including those dropped by monsters. You may not provide any berserk packs. You may provide any ammo you like (including bullets for the starting SMG). @RED77 - MAP03 - Quick-draw: You may only use hitscan monsters in the map, and you may only provide hitscan weapons. This includes: zombiemen, shotgunners, chaingunners, archviles, spider masterminds, shotguns, super shotguns, chainguns, and chainsaws. @tonytheparrot - MAP04 - 60 nines: Your map may contain only 69 linedefs in total. @Worm318 - MAP05 - Meat shortage: You have a 2000 HP budget for the monsters in your map. The total HP of all monsters may not exceed this budget. You may not use pain elementals or archviles. @Walter confetti - MAP06 - Lone sector: Your map may contain only 1 sector. You may optionally add another inaccessible sector that the player never sees if monsters refuse to attack you with only one sector. @spineapple tea - MAP07 - Dynamic duo: You may only use two types of monster of your choice. If you use pain elementals, your other choice must be lost souls. @Cacodemon187 - MAP08 - Thicc sectors: For any two linedefs which don’t share an endpoint: no point of one line may be within 64 map units of the other line. Essentially, your sectors must be 64 units wide at all places. @Lorcav - MAP09 - Homogeneity: You may only use three different textures and one flat in your map. @Arsinikk - MAP10 - Fun house: You may not texture any of your sidedefs. This will result in a lot of halls of mirrors. @ThatWeNGuy - MAP11 - Shining beacon: All sectors except one must have light level 0. You may not alter the light level of these dark sectors. @HiRon - MAP12 - Hell bequeath: Your map must contain exactly 9 health bonuses, one green armor, and no other health or armor pickups. @Andrea Rovenski - MAP13 - Blitz mapping: You have only 15 minutes to create your map, including testing and detailing. You may make updates in response to feedback, but don’t use this time to add new content or detailing. @Reelvonic - MAP14 - Two-fifty geometry: Your map may contain at most 250 vertices, linedefs, and sectors combined. @scientifikgenius - MAP15 - Straight-shooter: You may only use the following monsters in your map: imp, hell knight, baron, and cacodemon. You may additionally use one type of monster from this list: arachnotron, baby cacodemon, cybruiser, cyberdemon. Your map must have a regular exit and a secret exit. @ChippiHeppu - MAP16 - A second sector: Your map may contain only 2 sectors. You may not use blocking decorations in your map. @Anarkzie - MAP17 - Trouble in Turret Town: No monster may move more than 16 units away from their starting spot. You should use monster-blocking lines to ensure this. @OceanMadman - MAP18 - Doom is 1.5D: All but 20 of the linedefs must be oriented at 0 or 180 degrees (straight up and down). @SharkyChip - MAP19 - Diversity: You may use each flat and texture at most once. @SuyaSS - MAP20 - Power trip: All monsters must be zombiemen. The only weapon you may provide is the BFG. @mr-around - MAP21 - Staycation: All linedefs must be monster-blocking. @Codename_Delta - MAP22 - Silenced arsenal: All linedefs must be sound-blocking. @Large Cat - MAP23 - Abyssal cataracts: Monsters cannot see or attack the player unless they are in the same sector. This will be done using the REJECT table. @Amiga Angel - MAP24 - Melting pot: You may only use up to three of each monster type. @Qeswic - MAP25 - No continuity: All linedefs must be either impassable or valid teleporters (for both players and monsters). @IvanDobsky - MAP26 - Elevator action: You get a budget of 3 special sectors and 6 special linedefs. All other (non-special) lines and sectors must share the same (non-zero) tag, and the non-special lines must have line action 123 (SR Lift lower wait raise). This will let the player raise and lower your whole map as they please. @akolai - MAP27 - Drawing in pen: You may not delete or undo anything while making your map. @Ravendesk - MAP28 - Straight forward: Your map may only span 128 units along the x-axis. @Eon Toad - MAP29 - Soggy saga: You may only use liquid textures and flats. (You have been provided waterfall and lavafall textures.) @Arsinikk @DiR - MAP30 - Avalanche of green: You must provide the player a BFG at the start of the map, and they must receive an effectively infinite supply of cells via an out-of-bounds voodoo doll. @NiGHTS108 - MAP31 - The setup: Make a normal (short) map. Only include a secret exit. @NiGHTS108 - MAP32 - The punchline: This map is identical to MAP31, except all monsters are switched to non-monster items, and and all non-monster items are switched to monsters. @thelamp - MAP33 - Mind’s eye: You may not test your map or use 3D visual mode while editing. If your map is not completable for the final test, you may make minimal edits to make it completable. @Thatonespymain - MAP34 - Rando Calrissian: After you complete your map, all Things in the map will be randomized except for player starts, weapon pickups, and keys. @Death Bear - MAP35 - 100-second massacre: You have 100 seconds to make your map. You may want to plan your map out in advance. Spoiler Here is our list of original tunes for this project, written with a special limitation in mind. @Large Cat "why you locryin" - Written in C locrian. @Large Cat "Four on the Floor" - uses a 4-note scale only (Eb,Ab, Bb, Cb) and only four different types of drum hit. @DiR "Class Action Suit & Tie" - Written in 7/4. @DiR "Central Fissure" - Only uses pitch ranges F2 - F3 and F5 - F6 @DiR "Any Second Now” - Less than 11 seconds long. @KeaganDunn "Selling Out" - Only uses 7 different pitches. @KeaganDunn "Repetition Illegitimizes" - Less than 12 seconds long. @KeaganDunn "Anxiety Level Five" - Every measure is 5 bpm faster. @ChippiHeppu "Toxic Dump Capital - uses a 4-note scale only (D, F#, G, B) @Arsinikk "Locrian but not Really" - Written in C harmonic dorian. @Arsinikk "Instrument of Hate" - Less than 11 seconds long. @SuyaSS "Something Awful" - Every measure is 5 bpm faster. Here are some ideas for further music gimmicks. Feel free to come up with your own and write tracks for them as well! Locretin: Write your song in locrian mode. This is subjective, so I will trust you to honor the spirit of this limitation. Diatonic on this hill: Select a mode and tonic pitch. Your song may only use pitches diatonic to this key (this includes locrian, but locrian mode seems to deserve its own special mention). Tetratonic: Select four pitches within an octave. You may only use these four pitches, as well as octave shifts of these pitches. You may also use only four different unpitched percussion voices. Octatonic: Select eight pitches. You may only use these eight pitches, and you may not shift them by octaves. You may also use only four different unpitched percussion voices. Tone-deaf: You may only write with unpitched percussion voices. This mainly includes the MIDI channel 10 drum kit, though you may use other percussion sorts of voices with questionable pitch, such as telephones, toms, etc. Two worlds: All pitched notes must stay within the ranges of F2 - F3 and F5 - F6. Parallels: You may write one unpitched percussion voice and two pitched instruments. One pitched instrument may only play one note at a time. The other channel must play three notes at a time, always in a major or minor triad. Anticipation: You must write in 3/4 or 4/4 time. The first measure will have a tempo of 60 bpm. Each measure after that must be 5 bpm faster than the previous one. Drift: You must write in 4/4 time. However, your piece must feature a prominent 1-ish-beat riff which repeats every 15 16th notes. Schönberg: Each musical voice must follow this rule: you may not repeat a previous pitch (or any of its octaves) until you have played all 12 chromatic pitches. Repeat this process as necessary for each voice. Quality over quantity: Your song may be only 11 seconds long (hopefully without becoming annoying in a 5-minute map). Relay race: A given program (instrument) may only play during one five-second window and may not be used again after that window ends. These are strange times: Write in a very odd (heh heh) time signature, like 7/8, 11/4, etc... Beethoven: Write your song without playing it on any instrument or listening to playback of it. Once you hear it for the first time, it is finished. Collaborative Drum Kit: Select a pitch or chord for each channel. That channel can only play the selected pitch or chord. No program changes (i.e. only one instrument per channel). I look forward to seeing how you all work with these limitations. Happy and creative mapping to all of you! I have some ideas, just throwing them in, feel free to use any or ignore any or modify them in any way: - Each measure must use a unique set of MIDI instruments (programs). - Make a midi in 7/4 or 7/8 time (changing time signature for a short section is allowed). - Change the time signature every 4 bars (repeating previously used signatures is allowed as long as they are not consecutive). - Change the key signature every 4 bars (repeating previously used key signatures is allowed as long as they are not consecutive). - Since we are doing modes already, why not add some more to the mix, phrygian for example :) 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

The other ones are also good, though they're not quite as off the beaten path as I am looking for right now (though I'll definitely consider them if the current ones prove too wonky). I singled out locrian because...well...it's locrian. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

DiR Posted January 30, 2023 Heya, I want to join as a MIDI artist. I'm thinking of doing more than one of the music challenges, they seem fun! Here's one I started off with, for These Are Strange Times. I think it's in 7/4? or 7/8, not sure. DiR - Class Action Suit & Tie. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
