Punch.wad (single level for doom 2, not actually about punching)

Semi-quickly threw a doom 2 boom map together after I got hit with the sharp itch to make something. It's less than 10 minutes to max, linear, all arenas. Maybe a little mean, also no difficulties implemented. Only tested with GZ.

I'm very much not the speedmapping type, I can't not at least tweak things until they feel smooth to myself. But this one I successfully managed to put a lot less thought into while still coming out with a pretty nice result. I'm starting to understand that my weakness really lies in non-linearity and those smaller continuous throwaway encounters like the kind of idle moment-to-moment emergent combat that most doom maps are usually made up of. Wrapping my head around balancing all of it and keeping it interesting really slows the whole process down. But I'm thinking for the next map maybe I go the exact opposite from this map and try a similar thoughtless approach to something open that interacts with itself a bit more. If that falls flat it's at the very least confirmed that that is indeed the problem. Do any of you perceive a very different level of difficulty between mapping setpieces and whatever you'd call the stuff that falls inbetween?

Came for the name, stayed for the visuals. I might sound bias, but....the lack of punching might be disappointing (obvious joke). Congrats on the map, I'll be checking this out for sure.

Ooooh Boy, this map absolutely wrecked me! I finished it with Saves and Loads but at a stretch. 

 

The final fight was excellent, I won't spoil anything but I thought it was very clever.

Will try UV-Max this save-less over the weekend, well done!

Demo. Disclosure, I actually died a few times at the initial Arch-vile fight because timing things so one is never behind the pillars is quite difficult because I wanted to see what Mancubian candidate was talking about....and I guess I did/

hi! played the map in uv, but could not complete it (has only uv difficulty). got only as far as the archvile fight in the arena with 2 pillars. with the somewhat extreme weapon+health+ammo starvation, i felt i could no longer continue with my current gaming skills (need to "git gud" more). however, the monster strategies implemented were simply superb. i like the map lots, and learnt a tonne from it (tricky player timing strategies, monster placements, target player groups, cover placements, etc etc). definitely going into my map study folder. thanks for sharing :)
