What smartphone to buy?

Looking for a new phone for myself. Very good (extraordinary good if possible?) battery is a must. Preferably not too huge/bulky. The primary use would be reading, listening to music in car via bluetooth, navigation. Enough power to run Doom smoothly would be a plus!

Any suggestions?

Tbh I am looking for something closer to rugged phones when it comes to battery capacity (like those crazy 10k+ mAh phones), or maybe not as extreme, but Oukitel WP20 looks interesting. I wonder if there are any less bulky phones out there which could provide similar battery life? The overall perfromance of the device isn't my biggest concern after all.

Ok, forget about what I said in my previous posts... I just realized that there aren't any non-huge/bulky phones on the market to begin with (haven't checked smartphones in years).

My new question is: are there any not-bigger-than-Galaxy-A3-sized-phones out there with somewhat decent battery life that you could recommend?

I'm using a Pixel 6 here. Very happy with it. Would assume I'd be at least as happy with a Pixel 7.

Looks interesting. How long does the battery last under some moderate load (for example while playing music on youtube and using google maps)?

Wouldn't know - haven't pushed it that hard. I have had the battery run for several days in just Plain Old Phone mode with a couple of alarms set, however.

I have a Pixel 5a and I am very happy with it.  Before that, I had a Nokia 6.1 that I was also quite happy with.  I bought both phones directly from Google and Amazon respectively and activated them with AT&T, so I am not under contract or paying extra per month.  When I next need a phone, I'll likely do the same thing again, as I've been quite happy with the results.

Of all the phones I've used in the past, the only company I would never purchase a phone from again is Samsung.  I had a Galaxy Nexus that had a pitiful battery but was otherwise okay since it was mostly vanilla Android.  My Galaxy S5, on the other hand, not only had a pitiful battery, but an set of UI tweaks and preinstalled applications so awful that I hope I never have to experience again.  The battery cover also had a bad habit of popping off if dropped, and it also crashed all the time, sometimes sucking the rest of my battery away with it.  Never again.

Your battery lasts a week and you can beat up other phones with your phone. And it has a headphone jack, which is somehow a feature rather than an expectation now, thanks Apple.

Edit: I see this critically fails the "must not be bulky" requirement. Yeah unfortunately you can't really have both, the battery capacity has to go somewhere.

I'm running a Moto 5G Stylus which is pretty alright, the only issue with it I have is it has unremovable bloatware(news app, facebook, etc)

oppo A-series runs pretty good, so I would recommend it (although, it has a serious lack of features and the volume automatically lowers after a while, there's no option to disable that btw)

Does this phone fit in the pocket? It looks indestructible. If only there was a smaller version of it.

It fits in my pocket, but I also have jeans with big pockets. Here's a N3DS XL for scale:

Damn... 🤔 Maybe I should give this phone a try regardless of its size. All its features look absolutely amazing on the paper. But does it run Doom?

My Sony Xperia from 2008/9(?) was able to run Quake 3 (but not in a playable way :P).

So don't be afraid ;)

That´s some beauty right there, I don´t realy mind the bulkiness as that means that it is also one sturdy SOB. How good is the camera though, because I have an aging Samsung A51 which had back then a realy good camera but since then has been laging behind newer models.

Yeah, i can't even play Doom on my Phone.

But back then it was just a Novelty i wanted to test out :)

The Display did not allow to make Gestures on two points.

So everything beside of snes RPGs was unplayable.

I struggle to think of anything more masochistic than trying to play a fast paced FPS with touch controls.

Thought I'd go with Power Armor 13 as suggested by @Edward850, but seeing it in person it was just WAAY too bulky, so I chose PA14. Which is still huge, but surprisingly I am fine with it.

And it also runs Doom.

  • 3 months later...

Didn't plan to resurrect this thread, but I really wanted to share a funny fact about this phone after using it for a few months... Everything about it is fine and dandy except for thing: the default clock app.

Basically, it works fine for the most part, but sometimes under some incomprehensible conditions the alarm goes off at approximate times. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And that is probably the most ridiculous bug I have ever experienced in my entire life. It's not that I have been late yet because of this bug, but sometimes when you set it to, let's say 8:30, it can go off at 8:32 or 8:36 (6 minutes was the maximum error I have experienced so far), etc.

So, yeah... I have an app with an approximate alarm functionality. 🤔
