How do you eat a burger safely while driving?

Recommended Posts

So yesterday when I was returning from work I bought a Big Mac with some fries, nuggets and Cola on my way home. Now I´m a young driver, so I have still some things to learn but overall I have enough experience with driving a car.

The only thing I still have a problem with is multitasking driving and eating, especialy on highways. Now the fries and nugets posed no problem since they are conveniently packed and easy to eat, but the Big Mac was a real chalenge. When I tried to take a bite, the damn thing started to fall apart and bits of letuce started falling on my trousers which almost made me lose focus on some occasions. This forced me to put away the thing on several occasions and by the time I finished it was completely cold which was rather dissapointing

All I want to know is if there is some secret technique that I can learn or if it is something that only Americans are able to master.

Please help me so I don´t crash my car while eating McDonalds

To the point that you are considering its a good thing to eat while driving?

You shouldn't be multitasking driving and eating on a highway. You should be driving and paying attention to the road, especially as a young driver like you claim to be.

At this point i am convinced this is a gotcha thread, so you got me, i guess.

Eat outside the Mcdonalds and then continue your journey.

Spoiler

And i say outside because after this thread i don't doubt you actually want to eat inside, car and all. lol.

Just do what my Dad always does; drive with your knees and use both hands to eat. Just kidding... I'm always terrified when he does that. Don't do that.

But if you're going to eat while driving, go to a place that actually wraps their burgers, like Hardees/Carl's Junior, or Culvers, or any other fast food place that wraps their food. I guess even McDonalds wraps their regular cheeseburgers. That way you can eat it one handed and it doesn't get crap all over the place.

But yeah, your primary overriding concern while driving is paying attention to the road, so don't do anything that's unsafe. But to say that it's inherently unsafe to eat while driving is being extremely melodramatic. People have been eating while driving since cars were invented. Personally though, if I'm on a trip and I need to stop and get food, I go through the drive through, then park in the parking lot and eat. It's far easier to enjoy my food if I don't have to deal with driving at the same time.

Sure, true, but OP's a young driver.

So instead of finding ways for them to be distracted by anything, i am more implored to suggest to look for anything the first year or so.

I would recommend very much to not eat and drive, if it isn't easy to eat blindly.
Besides that it hinders you with the handling of the Car, your Insurance just could refuse to pay if something happens.

Yeah you make some good points. The real reason why I wanted to eat while driving, that I forgot to mention in the thread, is that I had my coleagues with me in the car and I had to drop them at their homes. So I didn´t want to keep them waiting while I was eating.

I´ll be sure to eat my lunch inside, or ask for some better wraping next time.

Pah, take some good People with you, park somewhere, put your Feet on the Desk (is it called Desk) and eat like a King ;)

Put the McDonalds burgers in a blender and refine it back into the pink alien sludge it came from, then put it in a cup and viola.

It may help your body digests the beneficial nutrients of a mass produced sugary burger while reducing the driving hazards while consuming as a drink.

Please, put the burger down.

My friend Mitchell no longer has a motorcycle because of distracted driving. He was sitting stopped at a red light when a lady slammed into him from behind. She was texting while driving and because of that, she could have killed him. Thankfully, he was in full gear and she was only going about 15 mph, but it still hurt like hell (sprained wrist / broken ankle) and his bike was totalled.

Moral of the story, you burger/text/whatever is not worth someone's life.

Mine used to do that when I was a kid. I always had the same reaction.

Best option. Food is the best catalyst for great conversation; I rarely eat out alone. I much prefer eating with friends. If I do get drive through, I literally never eat and drive. I just pull over, put on some tunes and have a good time. When I'm done with my crappy burger I bag up all the trash to throw away at home and get going again.

Tie it up with string and hang it from the car ceiling at mouth level

Alternatively, the Looney Tunes method described here does wonders :D

If you're burgin' out in your car while driving you can't take half-measures. You need to own that shit or else you'll flop. So sayeth Peter Chung:

When burgin' at any speed however I highly recommend holding your burger so that your thumb and pinky finger rest on the bottom side, with your other three fingers resting on the top. This keeps the weight even and prevents the burger gubbins from spilling:

How is this even a question? One hand on the wheel, one hand on the burger, 3-4 bites done. If you can't drive with just your index finger and thumb you should practice more. Driving should be second nature, with intense outer spatial awareness you can do a lot.

1. Purchase burger.

2. Return to vehicle.

3. Start vehicle.

4. Slap yourself for being so stupid as to think trying to drive while eating something which could easily cause an unexpected spill that your natural instincts will likely make you want to react to, drawing your attention away from the road and potentially causing a fatal accident was anything other than a catastrophically idiotic idea.

5. Eat burger while feeling ashamed.

6. Leave.

Seriously, dude. Is saving a few minutes really worth the risk of causing an accident? Just eat first.

I am glad you are not on the road anywhere near me. Good luck reacting quickly to an unexpected situation like that. This may be the worst driving advice I have ever heard: "Practice having less control over the steering wheel". Jesus.

Better to practice maximizing control when you have less control in case you need those skills. You sound like the type of person who would drive in a snowstorm without practising loss of control/seeing how your vehicle behaves on slick surfaces beforehand. Grandma two handed death grip tunnel vision over the wheel isn't always the way to go. Fuck manual drivers too I guess!

In all seriousness, FUCKING DON'T

If you want to eat takeaway in a car, drive to a park or a beach, hunker down, and start stuffing yourself... This is coming from someone who as of now, doesn't have a car nor a driver's license so take that as you may.

This is absolutely not what I said and not what I meant. A completely illogical counterargument. Done with this discussion if this is the bullshit you're going to pull. Grow the hell up.

Murdoch the type of driver who doesn't believe in hand over hand steering, can't let go even for an instant, it's too unsafe.

And you're blocked. You're putting words in my mouth to defend your shitty position and shitty advice. Insane. I have met more mature four year olds.

Nothing more dangerous on the road than a distracted driver. There are so many things you need to be multi-tasking in the act of driving alone that adding anything more to that is a recipe for disaster and not worth the risk be it to your own person, someone else or the financial nightmare on four wheels that is your car. One time I glanced at my phone in slow-moving traffic and rear-ended the car in front of me. My car was fine, but I made a huge dent in the other car and the driver was none too happy about it. Sure, it could've been much worse, but it wouldn't of happened if I hadn't needlessly distracted myself in that micro-instant.

Just pull over and eat or wait until you get home.

Don't worry dude I know how.

Step 1. Grab the wheel with one hand and eat your burger

Step 2. Pull over to the side of the road when you hear the funny siren and see flashing lights

Step 3. Get pulled over by the border patrol agent

Step 4. Get arrested for drug possession because the border patrol cop knows his McDonDons is 2 hours away

The real answer no one here is gonna say is to have a burger in the left hand, Mcchicken in the right, and steer with your wrists in between bites, and left knee. this is so when steering into a river by being distracted you get the mcdonalds land sea and air meal, passersby will be jealous of your opportunity.  /s

You sound like a high school kid who has 1 year experience more than the learners.

Both hands on the wheel as much as possible grasshopper. Next minute you'll be criticising professional drivers and motorsport racing for driving correctly.
