Geniraul Posted February 24, 2023 (edited) TL;DR: What are your favorite weapons from those mentioned below in bold type? Doom 3 and its DLCs brought a lot of intriguing at the times content, not the last of which are weapons that have not been seen in some of the / none of the previous Doom games. Those are: machine gun double barrel shotgun (was introduced to Doom 3 by the Resurrection of Evil (ROE) expansion pack) flashlight grenade Soul Cube Ionized Plasma Levitator (better known as grabber) The Artifact (commonly known as heart, equally was brought to Doom 3 with ROE) And then, of course, Doom 3's BFG shoots significantly different comparing to Classic Doom's one, but it's still the BFG9000 at the end of the day ;) So, what are your favorite weapons from the aforementioned in bold type? I'll start: for me that would probably be the grenade and the flashlight. Grenades proved that they can be relied upon back in Quake 2. And even if I prefer their ricochet technique in Quake II, the principle of the weapon's work remained the same. I even have the G button in D3 bound to grenades by analogy with Q2. As for the flashlight, it's not as useful in close combat, as it is in terms of chasing away the darkness :) And since Doom 3 tends to remain rather shadowy during almost the whole gaming process from the first main level Mars City to the last The Lost Mission's level Hell Outpost (or ROE's Hell if we're talking about the main plot), I think it is a wise decision to not forget that the flashlight stays your best friend from the very beginning to the very end. EDIT: Machine gun added, thanks Lippeth for the remark. Edited February 26, 2023 by Geniraul 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
RonnieJamesDiner Posted February 25, 2023 The SSG feels very satisfying to use (I think they nailed the damage and SFX), but between the more unique additions to those games I'd probably have to go with the Soul Cube. It was cool to look at, had some great SFX, and I really liked the concept of it. Having a single-target-"BFG" that leeches health and can one-shot just about everything, but needs to be "charged up" with 5 kills in order to use it (I think it was 5?), felt super interesting. I thought it suited the games final section really well, especially once they were willing to throw heavies (like Viles, HKs, etc.) at the player with some regularity. It would end up sharing a bit of similarity with Doom Eternals Crucible I guess, being a late-game, one-shot power weapon with charges (and actually connected to the story), but I think the Soul Cube was implemented surprisingly better. Since recharging it was directly linked to combat rather than finding rare pickups, I just felt like I could have a lot more freewheeling fun with it, even if small kills didn't offer much health. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tetzlaff Posted February 25, 2023 (edited) The Soul Cube. It's not so much a weapon, more like an enhancement / portable power-up. I like the alien meets art deco design, the story behind it, and it can create tension when coupled with sparse health item distribution. Lippeth Posted February 26, 2023 Out of what's listed, the weapon I use the most would have to be the grenades. I bind them to the middle mouse button and enjoy playing hot potato with the monsters waiting for the fuse to run out, and a well timed or well aimed grenade kill is very satisfying. Plus I don't like that they cycle with other weapons so I often try to use them first and avoid accidentally selecting them. The grabber gets a lot of use when playing an expansion, very useful for trivializing forgotten souls and cherubs. The soul cube makes sense in the story and is a unique way to stay in the fight when there are no health packs or stations around. The artifact is really cool looking the way your hands wither away when holding it, though it feels a bit op after getting the berserk ability, and replacing the soul cube regen makes nightmare way too difficult for me. The ssg was in Doom 2 and it is what it is, and I don't use the flashlight more than a handful of times in any given play through, but I like them both well enough. The machine gun wasn't mentioned but it would easily be my top pick among Doom 3 weapon debuts. It's a lot of fun in the early to mid game when switching back and forth between the shotgun as your meat and potatoes. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Azuris Posted February 28, 2023 The Flashlight, "killing" all the Corpse in the Room in Case they will stand up to scare you. Honorable Mention: I like how the Cacos float around when you shoot them with the Plasmagun. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
