Doom 30th anniversary book, do you want in?

If it is a commercial project and contributors get a free ebook version of the book, that is definitely a form of payment. Copyright law isn't all that complicated so ignore all the doom sayers ;) You write down the terms and conditions for contributing and then people can decide whether they want to or not.

If the terms aren't acceptable, start your own book project. That's how tons of wad projects started and some of them even got released!

I mean, granted, some people have been overzealous regarding your intentions but that would be rather petty. I for one wish you the best of luck with your book and others have indeed expressed interest in contributing. There's no need to throw the entire community under the bus just because a few people got under your skin, mate.

I would be glad to put at least a few words in the book, It doesn't really matter if I don't get in, as long as the book gets some appreciation, It's good for me.

Might also help with a Spanish translation if there's plans for one. (Viva Mexico!)

Kwc probably said it best but honestly, that thought seems a classic example of sarcasm. I doubt he's quite that petty somehow but of course, it does risk fanning the flames a little.

 

And another note, it seems like he'd be getting people bitching at him for hawking his books if he'd listed his Amazon author page initially so there's really no winning there.

Some of the reactions here have been rather out of line. Let's be realistic. While I wish the author every success, I sincerely doubt he is going to make a lot of money from this. Judging by the other books he's authored, he's just a passionate gamer and enjoys writing about it. He was very upfront about everything. If you don't like it, you are free to not contribute to it or buy it, and just move on. To say he's scamming or exploiting people is a bit ridiculous. Unless this becomes a fluke best seller somehow (and I will be happy for the author if it does), the business case for paying anybody makes no sense whatsoever.

If a book about the Doom community became a best seller, that would be such a big boon to the community. For me this would outweigh a few dollars of royalties. We have had some shit over the years. We all remember Covaro on Good Morning America representing the community right after the Columbine attacks.

I'm happy to contribute a few words if you can use them in your book. I read some of the first page of replies and then skipped to the end because I am not interested in reading three pages of debate, but I do not consider a few paragraphs detailing my experiences of Doom a valuable intellectual property. Nor do I consider myself exploited, willingly supplying this text in full knowledge of how it is intended to be used and what I will and will not receive in exchange.

 

In the unlikely event this book becomes a best seller or Hollywood adaption and my 400 words are cited as the driving forth behind it's improbable success I promise I will not hire a team of lawyers to come after my slice.
