RDETalus Posted March 3, 2023 (edited) I think a lot of people have a hard time understanding science and it's relationship to truth. There are three epistemological concepts in science: 1) a fact: radio waves 2) a hypothetical: dark matter 3) a model: center of mass Fact is easy to understand. It's a fact. A hypothetical is easy to understand as well. It's something that has no direct evidence proving its existence, but there are smoking guns that suggest it might exist. I think many people confuse hypotheticals for facts when talking about science. You have people who believe dark matter is an established fact in physics, but it's not, it's a hypothetical. Then you have people who attack dark matter, because they have ASSUMED that scientists have established it as a fact. But no, it's still a hypothetical. That's where you get the weirdos who argue that dark matter is "what's wrong with modern physics" because they have falsely assumed it's taken as a fact by scientists, but are unaware that it's still considered a hypothetical and very much an open question that needs investigation. Model is harder to understand. This is where you must be very clear about the difference between Truth and Utility. Science is chiefly concerned with what works, not necessarily what is true. For example, you have a "center of mass." Your center of mass is about 70 kg, it's a point located a few inches behind your belly button, and it's very useful for many engineering and science applications like car crash tests and jet pack design. However, if you got a knife and cut yourself open, you would never find your "center of mass." It doesn't exist. It's a model. It's a mathematical construct. It's not real, it's not the truth, but it's still useful and it works on everything from you to airplanes to planets to stars to galaxies. It is very important for you to understand that many theories in science are models. Quantum theory isn't a truth, but it's something that works, and that distinction is very epistemologically important. Media and science journalism frequently confuse facts, hypotheticals, and models together. That's where you get dumb headlines like "quantum theory proves multiverse theory" and stuff like that.| EDIT: Then there's "belief" and what that word means in relationship to science. I think "belief" is invalid and shouldn't really be a word used with science. A scientist doesn't believe or disbelieve the existence of black holes. He considers their existence a possibility, subject to change. Belief is more appropriate for faith. This extends to all of science, including evolution. Can you "believe" that evolution is real? I don't think that's the right word, I consider it a strong possibility that it's real, belief or disbelief has no relevance. I think the distinction between belief and possibility is something very important to the science vs. religion arguments, but I can't really express how or why. Jello Posted March 4, 2023 (edited) On 3/1/2023 at 1:59 AM, Fiber Wire said: It is a myth that shotguns do not have to be aimed or that they are inaccurate. The truth is that shotgun pellets do not spread at close to short range as much as misinformed people believe that they do, it is at far longer ranges when the pellets have spread out extensively, and shotguns can be quite accurate within 100m, and even further range with the use of a slug shotshell. I do fully agree that shotguns are generally depicted in games as being less accurate than they actually are, but to say that a shotgun can be "quite accurate" within 100m is absolutely false. And for the rest of this, I'm going to just use meters and yards interchangeably, they're close enough. A 12 gauge shotgun with a 22" barrel with a full choke, can reliably get a 6" group with 00/000 buckshot out to 25-30 feet, or between 8-10m/y. So that's 8-9 pellets within a 6" circle, but it's not uncommon to have a stray pellet that breaks that 6" circle. If you go out 15 meters/yards, you're looking at an 8" group or larger, and the shot pattern quickly breaks even further after that. A shotgun using shot is going to become very inaccurate after that first 10-15m/y. An individual pellet is still absolutely lethal, but it'll spread to the point where it's not reliably accurate. But then you get to the slugs; yes, they can be very accurate, but 100m/y is just about the maximum accurate distance for them due to the weight of the slug. My personal best with rifled slugs fired from a 12ga is some 2.5" groups at 75 yards with iron sights (rifle sights, not bead sights). Even then I have to aim about two inches above where I want to hit because the lead slugs start dropping quickly after 50-60 yards, but they are accurate, there's very little lateral movement in the projectile, but they drop fast. So yes, you can get 100m/y out of slugs fired out of a smoothbore shotgun, but slugs aren't really what people think of when they think of shotgun shells. And I'm sure people can do better with rifled slugs than myself, but I think 2.5" groups at 75 yards isn't half bad, considering I've never met anyone else who actually likes firing the things. I guess they value their shoulder more than I do. Edited March 4, 2023 by Jello 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

dasho Posted March 4, 2023 Quote You exercise your right to "freedom" and this is the result. All rhetoric to avoid conflict and protect each other from hurt. The untested truths spun by different interests continue to churn and accumulate in the sandbox of political correctness and value systems. Everyone withdraws into their own small gated community, afraid of a larger forum. They stay inside their little ponds, leaking whatever "truth" suits them into the growing cesspool of society at large. The different cardinal truths neither clash nor mesh. No one is invalidated, but nobody is right. Not even natural selection can take place here. The world is being engulfed in "truth." 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Fiber Wire Posted March 15, 2023 (edited) A lot of people have this misconception that catfish can sting you with their “whiskers”. This is absolutely false. The truth is their dorsal and pectoral fins can be extremely sharp and can stab you, and put a toxin in your skin that can cause a stinging sensation. The younger catfish are the worst, as the older bigger fish’s fins are typically dull and cannot sting you as harshly. You can’t hold them by the mouth either because they will bite you (they don’t have teeth but they have incredible jaw strength). The best way to hold them is by grasping them behind their fins firmly. Edited March 15, 2023 by Fiber Wire 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
