How often do you create a mapset from Map01?


Do you go from the start of the mapset to finish, or the other way around?

I'm curious to know if most people are actually like Romero, who start building maps from around the middle of the set.

I build maps from whatever I currently have inspiration for. For example, I built Maps 1, 2, and 3 (unreleased), started on 4. I then built a very simple Dead Simple clone for Map 7 (unreleased), then built 11 (needs heavy cuts on monster count and a revision on progression), started on 12, built 8. I realized that 8 was too large, broke a piece of 8 off and used that as the basis for Map 5, and built 5 and 6. Map 8 is likely going to switch to Map 31. I've also started on a different version of Map 7 which will use the 666/667 tags, but isn't a simple arena.

When the mapping bug bites, I'll usually keep making "MAP01s" that start out way too big, and I'm like "Ok, this can be map 2, let me pull it back a bit for map 1" but then that one is still sizeable, so I try yet again. By the time I've done this completely insane song and dance at least 6 or so times, I've got an episode on my hands! (Although the "finale" usually is made last.)

I no longer make maps in an order to arc a story or such cohesiveness. All of my

maps start as deathmatch creations which I add monsters to later in the design

process. Since my last multi-map release in 2021, I've also committed to releasing

maps immediately after finishing them (unless I determine they totally suck; then

they never see the light of day). In the future, I will release a compilation of my

singly released maps into one wad file but there is no forethought into "this would

make a great map01...mapxx, whatever. Furthermore, after continued playtesting

of the single maps, if I determine minor tweaks can't save it, I'll make a new map

from scratch and stick the elements I actually liked from the now dead and buried

map into the new work.

Being my own worst critic is a curse and a blessing. The curse is that one ends up

with alot of work in the recycle bin. The blessing is you all don't have to play sucky

maps by me.

For the megawad I'm working on, I started with Map01 but everything else is done out of order. Focus is given to whichever map I'm particularly inspired for, which preference given to the earliest numbered map that hasn't been finished. So, currently, maps 1-4 (plus the two secret maps) are 98% done, I'm mainly working on Map05, but most of the first twenty maps have been already started and some are near completion.

The current project started with MAP02 - MAP20, with MAP01 being created after the first ten or so maps were completed. MAP21 to 30 will come next, with MAP31 and 32 being the last to leave the conveyor belt.
