My initial playthrough of the wad had me concerned something was up with my laptop! But then I started to noticed changes (some subtle, some not so subtle) and realized with delight that there was much more to this than meets the eye. I still have yet to find all the content mentioned and will definitely revisit - thanks!

[Mr. Freeze]

This is the first WAD in years that kept my attention for over an hour uninterrupted, and got me emotionally attached to see what happened next. Any future wads hoping to score a Cacoward are facing some serious competition from this one.

@Veddge are you perchance a fan of the game Visage? The part where you unveil the mirror in the attic is straight out of Dolores' chapter, to the point where my heart started racing thinking I was in for a real horrorshow. I definitely see the P.T. and House of Leaves inspirations.

The screens in the OP just look like a house with some nice Doomcute and in no way reflect anything that might resemble the sort of thing being discussed. Or is that just part of the mindf*** that is going on here.

Two playthroughs done, one to the normal ending and one to the "true" ending. Even as far as horror goes and me not being that much of a fan of the genre this rattled me harder than some actual horror games. Top map of 2023 so far, and it will probably stay that way.

Finally finished the thing, and stumbled and staggered into all 4 endings (so far). It took about 5 restarts over several days, and I had to throw in the towel and consult the walkthrough several times, as I kept being thrown into dead ends and red herrings throughout my exploration. It makes the map a massive pain to play at points, but the induvidual steps make sense emotionally and intellectually considering the content that I'm willing to see it as a feature, not a bug.

I haven't touched Doom since Dec last year. Felt kinda burnt out after playing too many mapsets in a row. Checked into Doomworld today to find this gem of a release. Incredible map. Absolute masterpiece. I'm completely floored. One of the most beautiful creations to ever come out of Doom. Just such a cool concept and near perfect execution. Bellissimo.

 

And thank you to @Jimmy for the awesome Doomwiki article! Well written and very comprehensive. Without that i would have probably thrown in the towel along the way as i got stuck quite often.

 

Btw, a cool little thing i found while playing. Spoilers ahead:

In case you missed it, once you return from the Mirror Gas Station to the "real" dimension, you can go up to the attic and see the Mirror Vile through the large mirror, standing motionless where the Christmas ornament was on the floor. I thought that was pretty cool detail. Also kinda spooky.

 

Also the song that plays from the crashed car close to the Gas Station fittingly is the infamous "Like the Wind" aka "The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet". I think that could also be worth adding to wiki article.

I really like how you almost always manage to predict exactly what player is going to do, so you execute your tricks accordingly.

Well, that was definitely a trip. More than once I wasn't sure if my mind played tricks on me or if it was the map itself. This was a map like I never experienced one in 30 years of playing Doom.

 

Also thanks to @Jimmy from my side, without the Doomwiki article I wouldn't have found my way through that nightmare.

Like some others, I found myself profoundly moved by this wad. I don't even have an explanation as to exactly why that is. But it really was a surreal, beautiful, magical experience. I didn't know doom could do that. Not embarrassed to admit I shed a couple of tears at one point. Again I don't know why.

i love this so much.  i love it especially because 90% of it is exactly the sort of thing i would want to make, and here you've saved me so much trouble by already having done it.  everything about it is impeccably clever and the way it plays with doom culture is excellent.

You can indeed. If you collected all 16 artifacts before the final fight, they will all show on the wall. Eight in the living room in the normal reality and another eight in the living room in the mirror reality.

honestly, one of the most impressive parts of this is dropping it with such humble trappings and just trusting that enough people will try it.  i linked the thread to someone else and we were confused for like twenty minutes until discovering that they'd played the wad instead of the pk3

Yeah, the OP is a gambit of a lifetime. Also contains the best use of reg date I've ever seen (and probably the only correct use). Things would be different if this was a brand new account à la @Trustworthy Software.

Since it touched you so much you should perhaps know that the burned house is not the actual ending but more of an optional area. The level goes on for a lot longer. It progresses when you enter the mirror world through the upstairs bathroom mirror. Check out the Doomwiki article for pointers if you get stuck. This map has so much awesome content that is worth experiencing in full. And the good ending is really beautiful.

 I'm trying to figure out what you have to do to get the passage to the giant maze to open.  Anyone figure it out?

I just figured that out myself and added it to the Doomwiki article. It's based on chance. Once you picked up the blue skull key in the attic, the closet door in the smaller of the two upstairs bedrooms will open to the maze with about a 9% chance. So you might have to open it quite a few times before the passage opens. The longest time i had to wait was around 30 tries. But most of the time it doesn't take that long. Picking up the blue skull key activates a script that generates a number between 0 and 10 each time the closet door is opened and links to the labyrinth whenever a 10 is rolled.
