trying not to be condescending here but I feel like there's a fundamental you're not really grasping here.

See, the thing is, there's something you are not grasping here, as well - to him, Brutal Doom is Doom. He would simply not even consider the possibility of playing anything Doom without it. Any perceived barrier is of a merely technical nature; the concept of inadequacy is far too alien for someone who so openly enjoys to put some mustard on their Mona Lisa, so to speak.

Spoiler

I feel like sllahrednU should put the player in a mirrored version of House 0, rather than House 2, as the regular Underhalls drops you back at the very beginning. It just makes me grumpy that the map is just as gimped now as it would be on a fire route, with lots of things now unobtainable and unexplorable.

I also feel this might have benefitted more being a 'hub', with full completion only being possible by exploring *every* route and looping through Underhalls and sllahrednU repeatedly, slowing building to a full ending with multiple permutations depending on how thorough you were in the loops. The biggest sting would be the good boy; accidentally killed him by fighting back against the bad boy? Sorry; hes gone FOREVER and no amount of looping will bring him back.

You only really miss out the blue keycard door in the brutalist house, EVERY section can be explored after sllahrednU, it just takes away the key items which can all be obtained again.

all threads will invariably turn into brungle dungle threads. it is the law of the land.

i'm not sure why you insist on playing with bd, but i must admit, your dedication is admirable

Probably the same reason as why some people are speedrunning MyHouse with the lawnmower mod.

They do it because they can, without thinking whether they should do it or not :P (urge to insert that Jurassic Park Dr. Malcolm quote intensifies)

I want to suggest Foreverhood, The Given, and Jumpwad as the next mods to be played with Brewtol Düüm.

Alone I wander in the labyrinth, every minute of silence eating away at me, every slight sound from the world around me putting me increasingly on edge. I swear the textures are swimming. I swear that door opened by itself. I do not trust the water. I made a mistake.

...but at least I have this as a safety net

Memebros will always meme. Emotional nuance is always lost on people out for the next highfiving chuckle opportunity.

Just made it through in full.

Overwhelmed and trying to catch my breath.

The last time I had this feeling was back in January 2002 when I've completed Silent Hill 2.

Emotion wise, it can proudly stand in line with.

Brilliant.

I wanted to register and share my appreciation for this wad. This is one of the best levels I've ever played. By the time I reached the missing front doors for the first time I realized my whole body was tense. I was genuinely impacted by the experience. I played through to what the wiki calls Ending 1 without spoilers (or looking at any of the other files in the Google Drive), and sadly watched through Power Pak's video after that.

I thought I'd share one thing that resonated with me.

I actually only see it mentioned once in the thread so far, but the brutalist house read as a move from the house to an apartment in a city. I'm not as familiar with all the online liminal spaces references so the house seemed surrounded by other apartment buildings in a populated urban area, rather than a reference to any well known viral images. By the same token, reading the maps a bit more literally, the lack of houses surrounding the original house made it feel like it was separated and far from other houses, in a more rural area (reinforced later by seeing the long dark roads in Power Pak's essay). That theme of escape from the rural to the urban struck me pretty hard, especially when the duality of the brutalist house and the dog demonstrated some manifestation of a transformation from childhood to adulthood (and the notion of a close childhood friend left behind, though in this case it is a familial love, not a romantic one). And to top it all off: I'm old enough to have played Doom when it first came out. My childhood friend and I played together all the time. Just writing about it now, having experienced this wad, makes it difficult to hold back tears.

I'm sad I didn't push further into the map by myself. I'm a huge fan of House of Leaves; I caught the Navidson reference on the real estate sign instantly. I would have absolutely lost my mind in the labyrinth.

EDI: I should also distinctly praise the music, both the absolutely terrifying mutation of D_RUNNIN and the masterful ambient track. Just an amazing experience all around.

Don't think that the Brutalist House represents a move, as it has EXACTLY the same layout of the house. Perhaps it represents the different perspective you may have on something when your older?

I wanted to get through the daycare, hospital and flooded house/bathhouse today, but gotta say, that labyrinth ate the entirely of my nerves, and that was with KNOWING there is NOTHING in there but the experience of being there. I had to quit for the day again. Every single day I make progress on this, every aspect of the world within stays in my thoughts.

Like how the player has no sprites at all, and could simply be a ghost. Brother also discovered the hospital script is always active, dying in other maps and waiting, WILL make the screen fade to black, with...awkward results.

Damn, wasn't aware the gas station was mimicking the house as well. Which part of it?

It will of course mean different things to different people. I just thought I'd share my personal perspective based on my own experience growing up, and the way the map seemed to share those themes.

Of course, this WAD (or shall I say PK3) is a form of art, and art is subjective. Just sharing my two pennies on the topic (Can't make any posts today, don't expect me to respond :P)

After some analysis, I find it so extremely heavily influenced by Silent Hill, e.g.:

  • Multiple dimensions of the same reality: normal/sunshine, abandoned mirror/fog, nightmare/fire worlds;
  • A mix of memory/dream, nightmare, and reality;
  • Changes in one of the worlds coming through subtly/symbolically in the other;
  • A love/loss story, the character is moved by a deep feeling of loss, grief, and self-punishment;
  • Constant descent throughout the gameplay, locations changed by jumping down the holes;
  • Impossible geometry;
  • Artifacts awakening disturbing allusions from the past;
  • Signature locations such as the hospital, the concrete maze, and the endless staircase;
  • The player is locked up in a house looking for an exit;
  • A special class of monsters: besides the regular and boss monsters, there are unkillable beings with supernatural capabilities (like walking through the walls) such as the Mirror Vile or the Backrooms Ghost which you can only run away from;
  • Music actively tells the story;
  • Dual nature characters, having good and nightmare versions;

I'd even rather say it actually is Silent Hill, just told in the language of Doom.

The lawnmower speed runners don’t really bother me.  To do that, you have to have intricate knowledge of the map already, and the addition of the lawnmower doesn’t actually replace any of the original author’s work.  If you’re on your twentieth run through a map you’ve studied deeply, I think your appreciation for the work is clear even if you’re derping around the place in a lawnmower.

Plus this map has an actual lawn, and if you're going to live in the house, you've gotta do yard maintenance sometimes! The idea of ignoring the intended gameplay and puttering around methodically on the grass on your twentieth run is strangely fitting, and probably pretty meditative.

instead of thinking I'm asking why I can't play, please do read the messages before to understand I answered another user with a remark question...
I know I can play with BD or PB, I just wrote that I can earlier.

yes I know that you're primarily interested in the technical aspects of forcing it to play with Brutal Doom, but I believed that maybe in this particular line, you were asking why people kept telling you not to play with BD in the first place.  so, I was attempting to comprehensively answer that question, thinking maybe there was just a misunderstanding in the way.  but seeing as how you've ignored pretty much everything else people have said to you, including basically everything in my quoted message, I guess that isn't the case, BD really is the only thing you're interested in.

Someone should make that Doom lawnmower mod where you actually finish the level when you've done going over every 64x64 tile of floor with a grass texture.

Long time lurker, first time poster, I've been going insane about this map for weeks now.

I love how if, prior to this whole thing blowing up how it did, you had told someone that a map just called "myhouse" would be an obvious Cacoward shoo-in, they'd have every right to assume you were trolling.

that's absolutely awesome - i think the only one i didn't catch while playing. my favorite part of the project is just how much use they got out of the house layout.

Thank you all for your insights; I was pretty sure the problem was my weak-sauce computer, and now that is confirmed.

Tbf, if someone told me that a map set called, "Finely Crafted Fetish Film" and "KDiKDiZD" won a Cacoward without giving me prior context, I'd think you were going mad. (nothing wrong with the projects just funny names)
