After some analysis, I find it so extremely heavily influenced by Silent Hill, e.g.:

  • Multiple dimensions of the same reality: normal/sunshine, abandoned mirror/fog, nightmare/fire worlds;
  • A mix of memory/dream, nightmare, and reality;
  • Changes in one of the worlds coming through subtly/symbolically in the other;
  • A love/loss story, the character is moved by a deep feeling of loss, grief, and self-punishment;
  • Constant descent throughout the gameplay, locations changed by jumping down the holes;
  • Impossible geometry;
  • Artifacts awakening disturbing allusions from the past;
  • Signature locations such as the hospital, the concrete maze, and the endless staircase;
  • The player is locked up in a house looking for an exit;
  • A special class of monsters: besides the regular and boss monsters, there are unkillable beings with supernatural capabilities (like walking through the walls) such as the Mirror Vile or the Backrooms Ghost which you can only run away from;
  • Music actively tells the story;
  • Dual nature characters, having good and nightmare versions;

I'd even rather say it actually is Silent Hill, just told in the language of Doom.

i've also noticed it has some really strong influences from house of leaves which is a book i highly recommend for people who played this mod btw.

Joined Doomworld to say this was an amazing experience. Huge thanks to the creators. But, I have a question...

Spoiler

Played it all through myself and got the endings, read through this whole thread and watched many videos about it, but I haven't seen any mention of what to do with this door in the Brutalist house. I know how to spawn it consistently, but I don't know how to open it again or if I need to. I tried trapping the dog inside the room with it but that doesn't seem to do anything or change the beach ending. I tried crushing the dog with it but it doesn't close on the dog, though if you kill the dog and let the door close on it, it does smash the dog's corpse (though crushing the dog's corpse unfortunately doesn't crush the cerberus's corpse). There doesn't seem to be a corresponding one in the big version of the Brutalist house either unless it is even more well hidden or outside the Brutalist house area of the map.

What am I missing?

In regards to House of Leaves - not much into books, but damn, the album that is pretty much is the immediate cross-reference is a masterpiece. Actually i haven't even played the wad itself, as well as Doom at all for months now - just looking ended up being pretty entertaining. Kudos. The book looks like it could potentially be my cup of tea, but not now.

The movie The Backrooms inspired some of this. You can even see the monster in the window of the apartment building.

I love how if, prior to this whole thing blowing up how it did, you had told someone that a map just called "myhouse" would be an obvious Cacoward shoo-in, they'd have every right to assume you were trolling.

My dumb ass thought people were going on about some 90s wad until recently lmao

Anyway I played it the other day, believe the hype, etc. Incredible stuff.

It's probably been discussed, but if i heard correctly it seems perkristian's smooth weapons were used but Power Pak said they were from Smooth Doom?

Poor perkristian gets no credit ever since Smooth Doom came out 😞

IIRC perkristian is actually credited in the pk3's CREDIT lump.

Has anyone found out the actual physical newspaper (I'm assuming it was one?) where the obituaries were published? I was curious if the both actually exist, and are not just a result of digital fabrication.

The mod seems to hint of two possible ways of dying. A car accident and a house fire (nothing good can come out of a house fire). Otherwise it just seems bit too coincidental that two old friends would die in their 30s on the same day in a non-related accident.

The photo of them together seems digitally crafted as well. I took the obituary photo, cropped the face, flipped it horizontally, applied a little rotation and it's nearly 100% match in my GIMP when I apply opacity to that layer. The overall mood of that picture seems a bit fake as well. Tom is smiling, Steve is dead serious, and both don't seem to be dressed up for the same occasion. Also, this photo is supposedly taken when they were in their 30s – in the age of hi-res mobile phone cameras. Sure, polaroid cameras were all the rage a few years back, with young folks having their retro phase, so that could be one explanation. The other one being, it's photoshopped.

However, I'm guessing the obituary one might could be fabricated as well, since it requires higher resolution picture to create a plausible fake.

Sorry for going off on a tangent here. Not sure if most of you liked the kept the discussion more centric to the actual WAD itself. However, I'm not gonna lie when I say the journal, obituaries and whatnot invite the player to dig in deeper into the mystery.

Spoiler

Seems to be entirely fabricated. The funeral house mentioned doesn't seem to exist, some the dates don't really match, and I have reasons to believe - from both a gut feeling and a bit of research on the paper and other assorted files in the folder - that every single person in there is an AI-generated face.

As for "Tom" and "Steve", they have already been long and thoroughly proven to be fabrications, at least in the exact terms the story presents them - in fact, the story kind of falls apart if anything regarding them is "real", since both the nature of their relationship and their fate change depending on your route.

cloud area of the bath house

there were no demons at all. No throwing guys or ambush hemodemons. Was wondering if this was a glitch or maybe

purposeful. Anyone experience this?

I'm guessing you played on Nightmare, its the easiest difficulty and reduces the monster count by a looooooot.

I'm still curious about this, how exactly did you get this to happen? I was wondering if this was just a fake image but I checked and, while I'm not that familiar with doom mapping, there sure enough seems to that particular door texture exactly there, and not on any of the other doors here (besides the one on the outside visible from the living room).

To trigger this door, you need to use noclip, go across to the rooms in the perimeter, and then enter the room with the spooky lurker from the side. Then, when you interact with the door, it causes this door to appear (or open if it already exists). After a moment, it automatically closes itself. Using fly also makes this much easier to accomplish.

I uploaded it to YouTube:

And just for kicks, here is the dog being unable to be crushed by it, keeping the door stuck open:

This is weird! Maybe there’s some line actions that get skipped if you fly around like this?  There’s some other places where textures get swapped around that you normally wouldn’t see at all that are probably leftover bits from earlier iterations of the map, so maybe it’s another one of those?  @DavidN’s done a pretty thorough study of how the map works… any insight on this?

The dog not getting crushed is normal though.  Doors crush corpses, but never living Things.  This ain’t Build! Haha.

Would you happen to be using the original version of the wad, with the different placement of the dice in the pool? When I try to reach that area in the current version, I instead get sent to the backrooms, which sadly implies to me that this behavior might have been an oversight after all.

No I'm using the current one, dated April 16th. Entering that area head on teleports you to the backrooms, but you can enter it via the side.

I just beat the game all 4 endings and got some questions backstory wise maybe people can answer. Do we have any Idea who A is in the A+S heart? I assume S is heart. and Who wrote the journal and uploaded everything? If it is Steve it seems to be from a different timeline than the obituaries

I had just considered that after watching your video again, I've replicated it exactly. You usually get punished more for entering the wrong areas so this is interesting. I could imagine it maybe serving to block access from returning to the map, but theres enough openings already and noclip would let you pass it anyways.

Yes, Tom. There are hints in the airport.

I actually might have some thoughts on that. the departures list in the airport is sort of strange. I know Power Pak pointed out the "helpme" on the sign in his video, but I don't know if anyone's noticed that to the right in the mangled "cancelled"s, another string spells out "anna". I have no idea if there's more significance than that or if anna is mentioned anywhere else, but I'm thinking there's a connection there. those are the only words on the sign that are misspelled, so I don't think its a coincidence.

Edit: it seems people already know about this, I'm just out of the loop

It's becoming generally assumed that A is short for "ANNA", based on it appearing in the "cancelled" flights on the departures board in the Airport. There is nothing concrete to say who Anna may be, although I and others have come to believe it is another identity of Tom, most likely a deadname from before transitioning, based on the gender-switching bathrooms event in the same area.
Regarding the contradictory timelines, I am following the interpretation that they represent two different versions of Veddge: Steve, who drifted apart from Tom and who created and posted the mod, and "Steven" of an alternate timeline in which he and Tom married, lived, and died together, likely representing the happier mirror version of Steven from the dream described in the journal.
