So I first played this wad back in late spring of 2023, and it was a hell of an experience. Especially as a fan of stuff like mysteries, liminality, etc.


Story was also interesting from what I can make of it and got from other people. The levels were varied, had a great atmosphere, and felt like unlocking new secrets. Plus hearing about the technicality of how it works is also neat.

Hadn't really read through this thread outside of glancing at the first few and last few pages.

Has made me more interested in checking out other Doom wads, especially creative ones. Since I figured if I downloaded GZ doom for this mod and after playing it I wanted more, might as well check out other stuff.

I'm very late to this, but I just finished playing and I wanted to share what I thought.

 

You’ve eloquently recontextualised the Doom tradition of taking one's house and putting monsters in it, and I would argue even the very gameplay structure of Doom, and I think it’s amazing for a work to share that kind of dialogue with its inspirations and with its audience.

I also think this work uniquely gets how one seems to be removed from 'our reality', and placed instead at an interstice between individually absurd yet cumulatively 'possible realities', by this feeling... and I appreciate how it’s impossible to get a clear, singular picture of exactly what ‘went wrong’ because. That's what it's like. The facts of the past, present and future begin to blur together and become only possibilities, and it thusly begins to feel absurd to even try to view them as 'facts'. And at this point one learns that gallows humour comes naturally.

I can only imagine how our hero must then have bawled his eyes out at the sight of that sunset. He's so much stronger than he knew. Thank you for guiding me through this gap in the fabric of our reality.

Also fuck you for putting ‘that’ sound in it.

Nice article haha. Google chrome translated it for me. Its so cool to see how far this map and doom are still reaching long after their creation

I changed the "Loss" to "Dread" which I think is a bit of an improvement. I thought a blind playthrough would get more traction, but the video isn't even managing a 4:00 avg view percentage of its 37 minute running time. :-/

i'm not veddge but i recommend that you let him expirement and only look up a guide if he repeatedly screws a certain thing up

i played it blind and thoroughly enjoyed it despite not getting the ideal ending or doing 100% items

Just let him experience it for himself. There's enough about it on the internet if he wants to know more.

I genuinely thank you so much for making this mod, I don't think I'll ever have another moment like this in my life. I played this near it's release and OH BOY it was something, It even ended up getting me back into classic Doom! (And scaring me shitless)

FWIW, yesterday I tried random wads on idgames and ended up facing 7 maps among which only one I was not able to beat, it's not at all hardcore (but, still, tough), I just was clumsy and tired... What map ? The Mauve Zone par @The Royal We

 

Great map ! Experimental, twisted, "myhousish" (in some ways)... less existential than myhouse  but might please a lot of Veddge's fans.

 

Edit : forgot to say... prepare yourself to a tough start...

 

Edit 2 : to give an idea about the "less existential" idea :

In twin Peaks the return, at some point, Audrey Horne says to her husband : "I don't know who I am but I know I'm not me" a very Myhouse-type line, but IMHO Lynch never lose himself in that direction... here, with the answer of the husband : "But, Audrey, this is existentialism 101".

Speaking of Lynch, this map (and its fireblu)) made me feel like inside the TV Noise entrance to Twin Peaks, Fire walk with me...

 

Edit 3 : Just discovered, even though I'm a Lynch aficionado, that name "the mauve zone" is a reference to twin peaks... I guess the author did a good job ! (and,just discovered the BFG room, no doubt now)

I just wanted to share that reading everyone's reactions to this wad made me feel like I am a broken person. Let me tell you my story with it. I came to it at the peak of the craze - perhaps when PC Gamer wrote an article on it, or maybe even later, don't remember anymore. Given that there was already a craze I knew that there would be twists. So I finally get to playing it, get the blue key, leave the house and off to doom 2 level 2. So how am I supposed to know if I should keep playing or not? Have to go check a guide. Get spoiler that I should get the super shotgun and keep playing. Come back to the house, do stuff get through a few of the houses, see the dog(s), get lost in the brutalist house, try to figure out what to do for like an hour, get bored, turn game off to go watch videos on it. All the while I feel almost... nothing. Everyone is talking about having all these life changing or life affirming feelings and like... I just don't process games that way. I am trying to get to the end and that's all I am getting out of it. And sure, I can enjoy the journey but the game is going to have to spell out how I am supposed to be feeling for me to feel it. (Think of a sad death scene in an RPG. The game is practically yelling at you to be sad) And then figuring out where to go - I think some part of my brain just doesn't work or something. I think I could be playing this game daily until now and I'd never figure out the bathtub or the item collecting or some of those other puzzles.

 

So I am just baffled by how people are getting so much out of this, and by extension from other games and even other media. I guess I am just broken, or not smart enough or something. Perhaps its that worst of all curses - being smart enough to know that you aren't smart.

 

EDIT: I'd like to say that the strongest emotion that this wad elicited in me was amazement at the skill level, and time required to make this thing. I mean, imagine putting in all this time without knowing it would ever go viral - promoting it would obviously destroy the whole initial mystery of it all. So this person (who still posts on this board, as has been confirmed several times) put in soooo much time basically on the off chance that enough people would figure out that the whole thing is a mystery to be solved. Like, imagine if only a few people downloaded the wad, because who cares about another house, and those people just stop after the first house. Damn...

 

And obviously knowing what other wads look like, I was very impressed by the technical skill behind it. So to me, the intended mystery doesn't matter too much. I don't get much out of it. I just want to understand what kind of person would invest their time on something like this, with no guarantees that enough people would ever... get it. And then I'd go and play this person's other wads (and they are surely an experienced mapper) to go try to figure out inspirations. Not because I actually liked myhouse, but because that's what I am interested in. That's MY mystery. And apparently people with that kind of thought process have been deemed evil on here, so maybe this will be my first and last post.

Despite my own feelings about the project, I think it's kind of silly to expect everyone to react the same way or with the same intensity. You're not necessarily a broken person for not "getting" it.

It does sound like you have "dev brain" a bit where you're admiring the project for technical reasons instead of the emotions it elicits, which happens to me quite a bit as well, having been in gamedev and adjacent spaces for the past few years.

The same reason many of us make maps - for the sake of it, or simply as a challenge of ourselves to do something new, different, or difficult.

 

I don't particularly want to derail this thread too much but as a quick example, I made a mapset with a few other people, which represents people's feelings & understandings about death & dying. I knew some people would just view the project as "just maps" and some would maybe understand what the project was trying to convey. But it was a challenge to put emotions & feelings into spatial manifestations, and it was rewarding when it was complete. I won't speak for Veddge, because I don't know them, but I imagine that was part of the reason he made it.

It's just not your cup of tea, that's all. Nothing to be hung up about. You just want to be part of the group too much, that's the problem. Like, everybody is enjoying something, the hype train has left the station, and you're not on it. But you really want to be on it, because you want to be part of the group, belong. Well, you're not on this one. So what? If MyHouse just didn't do it for you, there's nothing wrong with you, there's something wrong with the game. Nobody said MyHouse is a perfect masterpiece ( there's probably a few people who did say that actually...), in the end it's still just a Doom mod, and requires a lot of Doom community context to fully appreciate and even then it's not guaranteed to hit you in the right way to really leave a mark.

 

I played it about a week after it came out, before even this thread had begun to blow up. So I really just expected a short myhouse.wad and was as a result completely floored. I also knew next to nothing about creepypasta and liminal space stuff and that greatly increased the effect. Otherwise much of what amazed me on my first playthrough might have seemed cliché. So it hit me in all the right ways and left a tremendous impression on me, but had I played it a few months later like most people from outside the Doom community and with a few spoilers and some knowledge about liminal spaces, it probably would have been quite a bit less amazing to me as well.

 

In any case, your problem is not that you didn't like MyHouse, but that you were left out in the cold while everybody else partied inside. There's nothing wrong with you, you just care a little too much about what other people like.

 

As to Veddge, he obviously created this during a difficult time in his life to process the pain he felt, and turn it into something productive. I don't think he was too concerned with creating a massive online hype with this. That was just a happy accident.

One I am fully behind @Veddge I learned about this from Midnight and decino on YouTube literally downloaded doom on my work computer to play it during breaks even in broad daylight even knowing when things were going to happen alternate house always made me feel like my skin was crawling out of myself and the distorted alternate house music Still unnervs me anytime I hear the entryway music anywhere else LOL this map you created is an absolute masterclass of atmosphere and psychological horror my friend and for that reason is in my top five wads of all time

It's like one of those movies ya never seen. Ever not see a movie like everyone sees and talks about? So much so that when you see it all its luster doesn't bond because everyone talked about it so much 

 

Maybe you absorbed most of it thru osmosis 

 

I feel like I didn't want to get on the crowded boat but now 

 

Am I even sea worthy?

It's absolutely worth checking out, if only for how it gets across its story not despite, but through Doom's core mechanics.

I will not spoil any of the story for you just know there are multiple endings and until you see a golden sunset you will know there is more fun to be had
