Well, it indeed looks like Doom 2 Level 16...

I had a funny experience while watching my total Doom noob boyfriend play this: he ran completely out of ammo, I tried to use my ancient zdoom experience to do some console commands to give him ammo but they all failed because of the map's anti-cheat, and then as soon as I gave him back the keyboard he immediately ran up to a wall, pressed use once, and found a secret door with an ammo backpack behind it. We were both in disbelief and cracked up laughing. Not sure if it really captures the moment without our dialog but we happened to record the game footage of it:

Though he ended up running out of ammo again pretty quickly. The map is very punishing on ammo especially if you don't loop through a basic ending and Underhalls first before going for the full ending. Thankfully by then I realized what to do:

Spoiler

the summon console command. ("summon medikit", "summon plasmarifle", "summon cellpack", etc)

I am thoroughly entertained by this level of conspiracy theorizing and I would like to add a bit more to the pile. Among the list of posters in the first few places there are two accounts that are brand-spanking-new after the first release. First is member @downstairs who, on March 3rd, created an account to reply to this forum post with "i beat it in 2 minutes, really quick." and has last logged in on Monday, May 1st. Not much more to say on this account, the only suspicious thing about it is the creation of it and the lack of interaction with other forum posts.

More interestingly, is the account who played a role in the original discovery of some key areas. @Speedy Eggbert joined on March 8th after the post started gaining traction. Their first post was a "discovery" of how to retrieve one of the artifacts. Was this a genuine discovery? Or was the author trying to guide our hands through the use of a yellow, skating puppet? Speedy Eggbert's only ever interaction outside of this forum post was a response to a status post about being named after a level editor of a game called Speedy Eggbert. Now who else do we know here that makes levels for video games?

We are on to you @Speedy Eggbert(If that even is your real name). We are on to you.

I know you're kinda joking and Speedy Eggbert isn't really that sus, but in all honesty, it would be so disappointing if there were even more fake people in this thread than there already are. What, they couldn't allow a single thing to happen organically?

Doomworld is just you interacting with 30,000 bots.  The whole thing was an experiment in John Carmack's AI development plans.

I trink you're overanalizing, as you can play the pk3 and end the game if you don't make the changes grabing the soulsphere, that how i played first the wad.

Or Not Jabba is actually Veddge, trolling us with misleading analysis. I mean, what better way to prevent people from digging too deep than to dig in the completely wrong direction?

Are you telling us, that in a thread about a wad that tries to gaslight you, that you don’t want to be gaslit?

Cute. But yeah, I think there's a difference between the experience we all had with MyHouse and the garden-variety trolling that you're doing now. It didn't feel like MyHouse was "about" gaslighting. It felt like it was about something a bit more substantial than that.

But then, when progressively more elements of the backstory start to feel like a prank call, and you find out your own friends and collaborators have probably lied to your face in one-on-one conversation, and you realize you're chasing QR codes about the literal death of the author, and more and more people's reactions to the map seem to have been faked, and then finally a member of the dev team comes into the thread just to laugh at people for taking the map seriously, you start to wonder.

I mean, hell, my best theory so far was that Tarnsman had made this map, and he's got a bigger troll streak than most mappers I could name...but I was still comfortable with that, because even if part of him was delighted in being a childish jackass about this, I know he has enough artistic integrity in his little finger to have made the map I thought I was playing. Lately, and especially since you waltzed in, it feels more like we're just getting the childish jackass in whole cloth, and then it starts to look like everything we thought we got out of this map was an accident, or imagined. And on top of that, all of the locations in the map turn out to be basically internet copypasta, and the latest person who's trying to insinuate that they made this map is someone whose only prior map is copying some YouTube meme video? It really puts it in another perspective. It starts to feel like this whole charade is the strongest case against video games as art that anyone could ever have dreamed up.

I don't think essel sees it that way, though. She's the one person who appears to have been honest about this from the start. Looking back at the journal and the map, I still can't find any sense in thinking that the mapper saw it as nothing but a troll. I don't think Jimmy saw it that way either, but again, he's a better liar than I thought he was. As for you, I hope there's more to you than you're letting on -- there must be, right? -- but if not, then I'll just accept that you couldn't have made this map and that it's best to ignore you going forward.

i've been lurking this thread and getting very invested for a while and, if pyro is making a main channel video about this then for all i know, this wad could make news head lines. maybe pyro is to be the one to find the culprit behind this, maybe tucker carlson. who knows

tbh, as impressive and endearing as I find this wad, I was a little lukewarm on this particular aspect from the start; I was a little surprised other people were fascinated by these areas, but I just didnt realize not everyone has already seen them before.  I guess it's the kind of thing where the less "terminally online" you are, the more likely you are to be intrigued, but if you are terminally online, you're more likely to be like "yeah yeah I know what liminal spaces and creepypastas are."  what's more intriguing than the areas themselves is finding out how to get to them and seeing how they transition from the normal house.  also even if the areas arent super original, it's still endearing as a 30th anniversary celebration of the mapping community; the myhouse concept itself, the shrek fight as an homage to old dehacked conversions, the slaughter fight at the end, the evolution of boom features and zscripting, all rolled up into one quirky experience

Alright, I'll drop the teasing. You guys have been doing fantastic work dissecting this, and I thought taking a small poke at it would have invoked a more positive reaction from it. Here's what I can offer:

I'd been thinking I recently encountered a Quake map with some similar mapping tricks and themes - Eternal Return by Benoit "Bal" Stordeur, in the 2020 Xmas Jam - but I reckon it is probably coincidental.

Re. possible authors, following on from the suggestion of Alfonzo, I wonder if Pinchy is a possibility, as I note some atmospheric and stylistic similarities between MyHouse.pk3 and Pinchy's The Alfonzone and Mercurial City.  According to the Doom Wiki, Pinchy's only map in 2022 was in the Abyssal Speedmapping Session 69.  I reckon FishyClockwork (mentioned some time ago in the thread) is another fairly plausible possibility due to the creative portal trickery of The Quirky Domain.

Hopefully the mapper wouldn't nominate their own project for an award -- it's possible they would do it to deflect suspicion, but it feels like it would be another one of those unspoken "rules" that we could reasonably expect them to follow. That actually rules out both FishyClockwork and Breezeep, who were both mentioned as suspects somewhere in this thread (they both +1'd MyHouse in the Cacoward Mentionation thread). A few other people too, like Bauul. Pinchy is a good guess though.

That is actually really interesting. I missed the whole liminal spaces hype when it started a few years ago, so most of the visual vocabulary that would be stock and standard for someone familiar with the genre is completely novel to me. I guess the wad really does check off many of the cliches for typical LS fiction.

In this light it appears that the whole mod might be far less of a personal expression and more of a well-crafted genre piece, at least in terms of the locations on display.

Not that this makes it any less of a masterpiece in terms of craftsmanship.

While looking up the original sources for these images, I also found the Cursed Shrek. So it does seem that the author used the aesthetic as a framework for their storytelling. Considering that, it's marvelously effective in its execution. There are other elements that feel unique and personal to an individual experience, such as the pills, the baby-related items, the gender-switching bathroom signs, and the house itself. As liminal spaces feel eerily familiar, in a state of transition, and loosely defined, having the player explore an in-between world to tell its story is rather genius.

As someone who's spent way too much time steeped in internet horror, I have to agree with this. So many of the areas are direct adaptations of popular liminal spaces (among other things) that my usual reaction was a more subdued "Oh, neat", rather than the "Wow!" that many other players experienced. This was fine for the most part but the point at which it started to bother me was:

Spoiler

When you walk past the broken car in the forest, and it's playing that "Most mysterious song on the internet". That was kinda the breaking point for turning the wad into an internet horror compilation-fest, for me at least. It also feels like a bit of a wasted chance to further the themes/story of the wad, as a more unique song choice could tell us something about either the author or their friend. Then again maybe that's the point, as the author seemingly doesn't want to reveal themselves.

Still, the technical aspects are done extremely well, and it deserves it's inevitable Cacoward. Though most of the areas felt like they were lacking in originality, their implementation was great and they were connected in novel ways that made them fit together in a cohesive whole. There were some aspects that did feel more original and meaningful (messing with certain Doom mechanics, the bathroom sequence, etc) that I greatly enjoyed, I just wish a bit more of the wad was like that.

I guess this is an example where ignorance really can be bliss. Those familiar with the genre are more likely to have a more subdued reaction than those for who the various spaces are new/unfamiliar.
