MyHouse.wad

Hello. I am having a frustrating glitch, or what seems like a glitch, when playing this wad. I get to the point of reaching the brutalist house and then jumping into the lit open window to collect the supercharge only to find the room empty...no supercharge! I am jumping from the same window as Decino does in this video at 56:05: 

 

I am playing on UV with GZDoom 4.10.0 . I have played to this point in the wad multiple times to the same effect.

It's fair to ask that question, but what you need to realize is that there are already more Doom maps/mods being released in a year than any one person can possibly play.

thelamp seems to be playing 'em all!... Guy's going hard on the playthroughs.

Are you jumping from the big house to the window? There's a version of this in the normal-sized version of the house with nothing in the room.

I haven't played it, should I check it out or what? I've seen Mutahar and Moist Charlie make videos on it, and I have it sitting in my downloads folder but I don't know, I haven't been playing much classic Doom lately other than to test DOSBox settings.

 

As far as it causing a mapping boom, the WADS and Mods subforum already seems to be split into more specific subcategories on a monthly basis in order to manage the high volume of wads that are constantly released, I think it's already a'boomin.

I suppose it's more like a 6 months boost than anything else. I've seen lot of stuff after 2016 and Eternal release, but after 1 to 2 years, it's kinda getting empty.

The atmosphere of this wad is absolutely unsettling... It feels like you shouldn't be there. From the very moment the music goes weird... That's when I felt that feeling intensify. The heaviness within this wad is unreal. When people say that it makes them feel depressed or broken. Listen, I understand that too. It really does feel broken. My main criticism would be that the music doesn't do enough. The story itself can be more interesting the longer you read into it. That's something that I really enjoyed in this wad. My friends have asked me to share their thoughts in my comment so here it goes:

"If I could describe this in one simple word. I'd say that it is "MONUMENTAL" because it really is... I got lost in this maze of a house... I got lost for so long... I had to watch videos on how to understand this silent hill nightmare"

That's all for now... I'll be sure to share more of my friends thoughts later and also my other friends may even sign up on the forum to comment for themselves. There's a few friends of mine that didn't want me to share it so I've respected their wishes. Overall, I really love this wad! Great work anonymous!

I have to be honest, I don't understand removing such a major component of the experience entirely. What part of the music is hurting their ears exactly? Did they try to lower the volume? Even 10% volume I think would be better than turning it off completely. I love the music and I think their usage in the wad is excellent and I just can't conceive of what it could not be "doing enough" of.

Is it possible to visit the brutalist house three times in one playthrought?

I want to pick the Megasphere, do the TV switch thing and then go to the airport. But no matter how i plan my path i can only go through it twice. Once after the Bathouse which you can go through only once and once through the "Escape" button path that also gets locked after you return to the house. After that it seems you are locked out of the brutalist house and you can't pick the Airport artifact.

naturally, the tropes at play and the specific surrealities would differ, but there's nonetheless something about the source engine that makes its levels quickly turn liminal if you so much as stop to smell the drywall

theres certainly a lot of gmod maps that try to do this

Not in a good ending playthrough, no. But you can if you burn the house down.

Only to a certain extent. For most, Doom will remain an old game parked in a corner of the internet (we even use a forum! Most people under twenty have never interacted on one!). 
Maybe new players will join us, but nothing drastic.

Personally speaking, MyHouse basically pushed me into saying "screw it, I've waited long enough", even though Eviternity was the WAD that made me consider Doom mapping. I tend to presume I'd be bad at something before I even try it, so it took me long enough, and experiencing about two dozen megawads and a few gameplay mods to dive into trying my hand at it. I don't think I'll be making anything inspired by MyHouse, as my main inspiration currently is Plutonia, only with fewer Revenants and Chaingunners.

"Explosion" might be too extreme, I'd rather say "spark above average interest". By that I mean fresh blood will at least try mapping (even if it's just UDMF stuff with bells and whistles from Realm667), while older members here might return to perhaps make one or two maps. Just like in every community, once the hype to certain works die, you'll see who is really interested in Doom mapping.

I think it will briefly bring a number of low-effort immitations, before most newbies move on to the next popular thing and the community returns to normal.

myhouse.wad feels so boring and overrated now. literally everyone and their grandma and their mother and their sister and their father and their uncle and their brother and some random kid during WW2 named Felix who made friends with a kid named Zelda all know this map. I wish i was one of the first people who got to play this map before its popularity explosion.

edit: actually nah, myhouse.wad is definitely boring for me but there's probably a whole lot more that we haven't discovered yet lol

I haven't even tried that wad because any other house styled wad simply would go out of my interest. It's a great tribute to his passed friend, well made and marketed well. Is this seriously kind of stuff people like playing Doom for nowadays?

If it does I hope people doesn't try to mimic all its singularities, having many more maps of the same style will just take away how magic and unique it is.

Not an explosion, more of a little spark frankly. It's wishful thinking that this wad can single handily carry a new doom-mapping movement.

Maybe it'll cause a new generation of people to start making maps based on their own house, however weird they may make it into.
