If you step out of the doghouse in the brutalist area and spam use a few times, a switch/door sound will ring out. I haven't found out if this changes anything and if so, what it is. Does anyone know?

That linedef before the doghouse has a repeatable action, so you can trigger it more than once (that's the sound you hear), even though it doesn't do anything since the door is already lowered to the floor.

Edit:  Turns out I had severe mycotoxicity from a pretty bad mold problem in my house.  It got so bad it was causing hallucinations and emotional disturbances.  I saw a towel turn into a 2 foot carp gasping for air under my stairs.  That MIGHT have had something to do with the reaction I had to this map.  I've gutted most of the house and it's no longer an issue.  I'm feeling better. 

 

I could not finish Myhouse.  It's not a technical limitation.  The pk3 runs just fine.  It's not that I dislike it either, it's an incredibly well made level with great Doomcute.  Myhouse just really gets under my skin.  The music, the dilapidated house, the sense of being lost and alone, the bits of text that hint at horrible loss, the brutalist architecture, the the old 90's style carpeting in the airport.  All of it is incredibly unsettling to me.  The uncanny nature of the map left me feeling nauseous.  I almost started to cry and just shut the thing off.  I felt like human garbage for the rest of the day.  It's making me uncomfortable just talking about it.

 

A movie has never done that to me.  Neither has a book.  To me, Myhouse is a work of art because of this visceral reaction.  It is so strange to say that about a video game level made for a 30 year old game.  But there it is.  I watched a few lets plays so I could see what else it had to offer, and even that was not fun, but it was compelling.

The next Planisphere; instead of New York or some city, we get a fictional town absolutely full of hundreds of myhouses to clear out. Bonus points if theres also commercial buildings dotted here and there.

haha I keep getting the same eneing, even though I do different things. So if this project happens, I am gonna have to take the E1M1 slot. Y'know, because linear and small. Much like my route through the original.

Have anyone noticed this shadow entity behind the curtain on a window in the brutalist house section of My House wad? Is there any way i can access this area and/or other windows? I got to enter in one of the windows on the area, but there's nothing but a bright yellow wall.

That's a tradition as old as the Doom modding scene itself. I feel like it's basically a rite of passage to try and recreate your own house, school or workplace in Doom.

And you can say that with an Eraserhead pfp? Damn, clearly not everyone gets affected the same way by the same piece of media. As to that feeling, I've also gotten it with most of the episodes of Black Mirror I've watched.

 

On the topic of MyHouse.pk3, at this point it's pretty much impossible to say anything that hasn't been said before. It will live in my head for quite a while I imagine, and while I don't think of myself as a connoisseur of doom mapping in any way, it is really impressive both technicaly and design. Kudos to Veddge.

It can be daunting i agree i have decided to make a 3 map set i have only almost finished the most basic of the maps and have been working on it for 9 months

If you try to noclip/fly in from the front you'll get backroomed but if you get to where the fake teleporter exit is and then noclip from there you can go in from the side. Nothing is intractable but getting here triggers a door to close on the porch that on the inside has the texture of the normal house doors. DanPMK posted about it in the original thread with a video:

IKR?  Maybe it was just the headspace I was in at the time.  I also think the interactive nature of video games can lend them more impact.  Like how Amnesia the Dark Descent scared me more than any horror movie has.

In my opinion nope. Even though we have such a big community and mod/map creators, that in a way, are the ones that keep all this alive, there is no way that a "massive" influx of people comes just like that and starts mapping. Definitely some newcomers yes but thats all.

 

I think its great that content like these is getting done, and even better, that they get such attention.

 

It a shame the classic game gets outshadowed by the Brutal Doom trend that seems to have stained the game. I have to admit, my childhood entry to gaming was with Doom 2 all the way back in the 2000, then when i grew up i kind of forgot it, and when i came back to see whats up i was like instantly hit with that version of the game; and although i didn´t disliked it at first, i realized that that thing deviated me from the original game, and the real good content that people keep uploading, and even older ones that i didn't even knew.

 

I apologize if this was off topic but i wanted to express this as i feel most of returning players or newcomers may have stumbled upon it like i did. And maybe they will now that i think of it, with this boom on youtube you are mentioning.

I don't think so. They want to shit in their pants because it gives them more audience. If they have to play it with 90s-00s graphics, they do it, and they don't only play recent games like Visage. But I think Doom is another thing and can't "supply" them with this kind of stuff. I mean, you can do this kind of map for Doom, but it requires a lot of imagination and being "tied" to a theme and an architecture, so it's hard to improvise. And we are talking about a masterpiece like myhouse.wad. It's not like mapping in the 2010s with a cchest4 inspiration. So, it's very difficult: it's difficult in movies, it's difficult in recent games, imagine how difficult is in Doom (unless you do a full-converted mod without any other connection with Doom except gzdoom). In my opinion, of course; maybe I'm wrong.

 

However, Doom doesn't need this. The Doom community has been very active before myhouse.wad, doing a lot of stuff all the years. And it's already 30, so I assume that it will be active after myhouse.wad.

Not sure if there'll be an explosion. People who are still into this game have been for quite some time, I really doubt the community grows by leaps and bounds year over year. It'll be one of those "oh wow, can you believe they made this and they still play this game?" type of thing. And then people will go back to what they're actually interested in. If it was Doom, they had a few decades to get into it.

 

With any luck, it'll help keep a few people with a passing interest around.

It's been weird to see the amount of popularity this map has got. I kept on getting recommended a video about MyHouse and saw the amount of views it had grow from 1 million to around 5 million in a couple of days. I honestly don't know much about the map itself, I played it a couple times when it came out but didn't really get it so I just stopped playing and forgot about it, so it was a bit strange to see videos about it now suddenly pop up in my Youtube recommended.

Although, I doubt that this will make tons of people want to get into mapping. Sure, it puts more eyes on Doom, but I'd guess that a few people might get into mapping through being inspired by MyHouse and there might be more ARG/surreal mapsets in the next few years, but not an explosion or influx of new people.

I think this might lead to a boom in people using silent teleports in their maps more. I love non euclidean geometry, and love exploring worlds that don't follow the same rules as ours. I keep telling myself I need to make a non euclidean game/doom wad once I get good at level design, but I think overall myhouse.wad is the perfect showcase of how to use silent teleports in a game, the same way in how Half-Life was the perfect showcase of how to make a game around an unbroken first person narrative (This comparison might be a bit of a stretch, but I'll stand by it.)

 

It's inspired me to work on maps some more, so I can get the skills needed to make a big project in UDMF, and I hope it does the same for a bunch of other people, and inspires them to use the silent teleport lines in their maps too.

I started using silent teleporters in my maps about 2 years ago. It certainly makes fake multi-level buildings easier. Same thing goes for making outdoor buildings you can enter in to. For the longest time, I struggled trying to make buildings you can enter in from the outside.

I finally got around to downloading and trying out that mod and holy eldritch goddesses do I regret it.

I've already finished this stupid fucking garbage like 3 fucking separate times, and nothing friggin triggers!

Far as I could gather, every "rabbit hole" is supposed to begin when you see that stupid friggin Soul Sphere from the windows, but it was NEVER there for me.
Every time I get there, be it before or after killing every enemy in the house, it's not there. ( Yes I am looking from the window. )

Why the hell is nothing ever happening? What am I missing?!?
