The download comes with both, I just tried running the wad instead... but yes. that seems to have fixed it. thank you so much!

I'm really enjoying this wad, but I've reached a point where it keeps crashing. After I flood the house, if I try to go downstairs (into what looks like a water portal), the game freezes, crashes, and displays this error:

Execution could not continue.

Render threads did not finish within 5 seconds!

Is there anything I can do to fix this? I'm playing it on a MacBook.

Another problem that might be a clue: sometimes when I play MyHouse there are textures missing, and other times there aren't, and I don't know why.

if you read the journal or even the original post fully, you would realize that the .wad file is the friend's original map as found by Veddge, without the enhanced UDMF stuff added.

Without telling us any information whatsoever (what is your source port, what is your PC and OS, does it give an error message, when exactly does it crash Etc. Etc.) there's almost nothing we can work with to help you.

After I've read posts about tons of House of Leaves references including all the story between Steve and Tom and that the wad caused the book to increase its sells a thought came to my mind: what if Veddge is Mark Z. Danielewski himself or someone the latter hired to make a mod/wad with tons of references to his book for the sake of advertising it and therefore boosting its sells? Before MyHouse I never heard about House of Leaves. Or maybe Veddge is such a big fun of the book to the point he decided to make a mod since 2020 with references to it so his favorite writer who wrote his favorite book will give additional income from its sales and the book itself will be known much more.

No. Most likely, most of the people who came from MyHouse that want to make maps with the same technological prowess as MyHouse with ACS, ZScript and GZDoom UDMF's bells and whistles would likely give up rather quickly due to the fact that these things need a lot of time to get used to and learn. Only verrrry few would either have the determination to learn how to make a UDMF map while utilizing all it's features, or learn more about other map formats and have less of a chance of quitting due to mapper's block.

I like to think of the 1-9-90 rule when it comes to stuff like this. It essentially means, within a community, 90% of members will only lurk and view content, 9% of them will contribute (posting on forums, giving feedback to maps, sharing gameplay, etc.), and only 1% will create content. We can assume that 9% of people who've seen or played myhouse.wad have decided to become active members of the Doom community, and 1% will try their hands at making maps or mods. That might not sound like a lot, but I have seen at least one person in this thread who's tried making some maps since playing this mod, and that's one more person making content for us to enjoy.

I also have to agree with others that I don't believe this community is dying or doomed to perish or anything like that. Sure, multiplayer Doom isn't in the best state, but everything related to singleplayer is alive as ever. Pretty much every week you see a new gameplay mod, community project or megawad being made, and I doubt anyone will stop making them in the foreseeable future. Hell, I've seen demoscene communities for vintage computers that've been around since the early 80's which are still going strong. If they can last this long, the Doom community can last longer.

The original thread was asking if there was going to be a high increase, But that is still pretty true!

I don't get why people are concerned about this at all. If the Doom community has survived for 30 years already, what's stopping it from living 30 more? The worst that could happen is that the community just becomes slower in releasing projects for a short period of time, but outright dying? That really just feels like doom-saying at this point.

I also have to wonder why MyHouse re-ignited that fear. Popularity should mean more thriving potential, and it seems to have inspired the opposite in some people.

The community weathered 2004 to 2014, the period where no new Doom games were released or announced and the last game in the series was the controversial Doom 3. It's in a much, MUCH better state today. Some people just gonna doompost.

Releasing it anonymously on an old, obscure forum for a 30-year-old game without any promotion whatever in the hopes that it will become an Internet sensation... Doesn't seem like the smartest way to promote something for financial gain.

Most of influencers are millennials and most of millennials played Doom and many of them stream Doom mods/wads and zoomers watch these streams. This book in its original form wouldn't interest much of influencers and especially zoomers, but a book adapted through Doom wad will definitely gain their attention.

I think you underestimate the younger generation’s love for spooky stories.  House of Leaves is not obscure; in fact it’s often considered the gateway book for that entire genre of fiction.  And “zoomers” are super into stuff like liminal space horror, SCP, and the backrooms already, so a book that’s bigger on the inside isn’t really that strange for them to be interested in.  Just because you haven’t heard of it before doesn’t mean no one has.

I think you may also be severely overestimating the popularity of Doom streams.  Even the most prominent members of the Doom community get like a dozen viewers at most and they’re all other forum members.

This would be the worst place to attempt a stealth marketing campaign aimed at “zoomers.”  And that’s not even considering the amount of time and effort that would have to go in to making the map in the first place.

If MZD just wanted to sell more books, all he had to do was start tweeting about Kane Pixels or Skinnamarink or Hello Neighbor or the several other spooky-house-themed pieces of horror media the kids are in to these days.

There are not only small streamers from Doom community, but also popular streamers like SpaceYeen and Vinesauce team. Their videos have tens of thousands of views.

Texture filtering

The literal creator of Doom was defaulted to texture filtering... can we please have this dogshit feature disabled by default now?

I agree, Graf Zahl needs to copy his .cfg and put it on a USB or smth so no one has to deal with his ass settings, or just disable it from the get go. I'm sorry Zahl, but if your tired of going into your settings when you install a fresh version of GZDOOM, maybe you should not have added 10 million different settings to the point to where you need an "Option search". Literally every other source port has a quarter, or even less of the amount of options that GZDOOM does, I get having the customization is nice but if your source port doesn't even have a colored blood option, idk what the point is anymore.

Texture filtering

At least it’s not that PCGamer interview where he played Doomsday.  Pretty sure he had bloom and stuff on and everything!

weirdly, he knew about GZDoom’s freelook and deliberately resisted turning it on because he doesn’t like it, which seems to imply John Romero likes texture filtering.  The horror!!

I’m a big supporter of playing how you want, but it kinda does seem like a sourceport should probably come with it’s default settings set to best emulate the original game.

He was using a mouse. He was setting up freelook. I pass on youtubers doing blind play throughs of this map. Way too frustrating. I will, however, watch John Romero play it. He's got some work to do. Hopefully he will do it again. It's gotta be 100 to 1 shot that anybody gets it on their first playthrough without looking it up on Doom Wiki. Even then you're going to screw up the first couple times.

*This.*

Even though it is smart to do, I'd say that at least 97% of people do not bother checking every single setting a game provides to make the game look and play the best it can, it's too overwhelming for them and they just want to jump right in. This is why I'm absolutely flabbergasted about why in the world texture filtering and the like is set to default in GZDoom, even though the VAST majority of players hate texture filtering. I have already seen too many people play Doom for the first time to try out MyHouse.wad, only to be defaulted to texture filtering...

Default settings are incredibly important for new players, they rely and trust those settings to provide the best possible experience for them, but if the settings are set to something awful and turn the entire game into an unappealing and ugly looking mess (i.e. texture filtering), it is a lot more likely that it will be the first and last time a lot of players will ever even bother opening Doom.

Spoiler

Bit of a tangent here: My first experience with Doom was with the Steam release, and it looked awful because of the incredibly low resolution. So I tried the most popular port, GZDoom, but that had texture filtering and made me vomit, so I simply gave up on Doom, because there were too many ways to play, with too many settings, and I simply got overwhelmed and annoyed. That was until I randomly got a video by decino recommended to me almost a year later, and I was amazed by how beautiful the game looked on his end. Doom, running at a normal resolution with normal looking textures?! I couldn't believe my eyes. I instantly downloaded PrBoom+ (which he was using at that time) and became an avid Doom enjoyer. If it wasn't for him, I would've never really gotten into Doom.

...point is, I would've properly started playing Doom almost a year earlier if it were not for texture filtering set to default in GZDoom. :P

I ordered House of Leaves today as a result of this wad. Was gifted physical money for my birthday, found a good use for it.

I haven't seen a pk3 like this before, probably the best one I played. I took my time to play it and many times in the public (on a single-board computer) just because I want everyone to see it.

Spoiler

I hate the bathhouse maze, took me a while to find it and then when I do I forgot the route again. The ambient BGM stuck with me outside of the game too, I can now hear it in real life when I walk to some silent area.

I just think it's unfair that this thread keeps on pushing other threads down further.

Go to the index page and click this button:

While I do think it's a little over-rated, there's 30 threads per page. Stuff getting slid off the global index is hardly something you've actually got to worry about, even on a forum with this (massive) level of activity.

What dimension and artifact things are you guys talking about??? I can't find any of those, to me it just seems like a normal map.
