What's the meaning of life in your opinion?

Recommended Posts

It's completely subjective, but my advice for anyone here is to reach a conclusion on your own, and not look to someone else for what that meaning may be.

To me there are only 2 things - art and family.

Family is pretty self-explanatory.

And about art, I came to realization lately that the value of legacy of a particular individual is based on how many people have learnt something truly precious in life thanks to that particular individual.

That would be remarkable and fulfilling to me if sometime in the future somebody just contacts me and says, "Hey, I learnt how to draw and found my own art style thanks to your artworks. You are my teacher!". I guess, then it would be pretty clear to me that my creative efforts have been acknowledged, that they were not in vain, and won't simply perish from this realm. Even if you make just one person happy - it's an accomplishment in life, because the act of good is the most precious thing in this world.

... And if that never happens, well... At least I tried my best :)

the meaning of life = does not compute

"Meaning", is a very troublesome word.

The meaning of life, if there is one, is certainly not a computation, so I certainly can't discuss it in a way that is going to be equally useful to everyone who might be curious.

And, I am skeptical of anyone who says that they can.

As per my personal philosophy, life is in essence a middle finger towards the things that make it difficult and/or god. The longer you are alive, the bigger the middle finger, so I try to stay alive.

Try to avoid doing stupid shit???? Tbh, it feels you're either blessed with tools and people that will help you find a purpose or you're not and you're just hoping that you might find that one day. Still, if you get yourself to a mental place where you're not concerned with things outside of your direct control that don't have a direct impact on you, you might feel a little better.

1. Survive

2. Having Fun

3. Reproducing

In that Order, if you don't have Fun to reproduce, you don't do it.

If you can't survive, you don't have Fun.

I'm a Christian, so I think the "meaning" of life is to emulate Christ. I don't remember who said it, but a quote I've heard a few times is "First love God... and then do as you please." with the idea being that if you love God, it'll direct your actions to live in a way that pleases him.

That's a lot easier said than done though, because you're still human, and if you're anything like me, you can be a very stubborn one, lol!

But with that as a template, I think the rest is pretty much up to you. Life seems sort of like a sandbox, with everyone started off at different levels, in different biomes with access to varying degrees of resources and skills. If you can find something you enjoy doing, and find a way to glorify God with it, while avoiding some of life's more erroneous pitfalls, than you're in about the best position you can be.

i would say the meaning of life is finding true inner strength to be fully open minded to other ideas and views, to fully acknowledge and appreciate your surroundings.

if that makes sense.

Not bad but how would one go about using these ideas?

nihilism... not only draining, but a waste of time. Such beliefs only serve to make you, and by extension, mankind stagnate in a status quo that isn't particularly good for anyone.

I might have the wrong idea of nihilism, perhaps there's a different term that I should be using? But anyway I don't believe there's an intrinsic "right and wrong" in the universe. Nor a purpose to live, other than to live. I do however think that when humans live cooperatively, they survive much better. In fact, coming at it from a point of "there are no morals," I'm inclined to say "we better make some damn good morals then." There ain't no cartoon fairyland fantasy bearded man-god coming down to help you with your uncountably small life on this grain of sand, as evidenced by thousands of years of human history where not a single time was any group of people stopped for "wrongdoing" by a non-human entity. Which means we are fully responsible for the morals we live by.

The only true thing that fulfills you in life are memories. Memories give you a reason to live. And are a good reason to peacefully pass away without regrets, knowing you've lived as a human.

You don't ever feel fulfilled in the present moment? Take a deep breath. Which part is more fulfilling, the breath or the memory of it?

This is well put; for my two cents I'd also say it helps to be receptive and realize that you may not fully understand what works may be done through you or why you are in a certain situation until well after the fact.

I'd say the memories and I think Dr. Seuss said it well with his quote: “Sometimes you will never know the value of something, until it becomes a memory.”. Not exactly breathing but for example spending time with close friends or family. The breath is temporary and is over in one moment, memories are with you until you die. Of course this answer changes depending on the person you ask and I'm just some guy.

to each his/her own beliefs. for me, to find one's way home by silent prayers seeking guidance to "whatever god that is the truest god", and helping others.

there is a 50% chance that god does not exist, and a 50% chance that such an omnipotent being does exist. logically, nothing could be created from absolute nothingness, even space time itself. since scientists currently do not know how elements that made the big bang that birthed the universe first came into existence from absolute nothingness, there is a 50% chance that a higher being, a god of sorts, created the universe from absolute nothingness.

"which god?" cannot be directly answered. the reason is all religions in the world claim their god/gods is the truest creator and is all powerful. some even use religion to gain nefarious influence over other people, even forcibly imposing on others. to bypass this messiness, imo just silently pray from anywhere in the world, directing to "whatever god that is the truest god", asking him to guide oneself to his truest path. if there exist a god that is truely all powerful and graceful etc, the god should be able to hear the silent prayers and in due time, give guidance.

for me, at least be doing something about it (silent prayers and helping others) due to a huge risky 50% chance that god really does exist is better then doing nothing at all. i want to play safe, not wanting to be left out for the worse after i die, finding out there truely is an afterlife, reincarnation or going to hell eternally, etc etc.

just my 2 cents. sorry for the long post.

For me personally it's just what you make of it. You're born into this world, with initial variables (location, family) and are given a life to experience.

I'm a religious person myself... and I don't really mean to be extremely preachy, just trying to answer the question with my honest opinion. The reason we all exist is to pay tribute to God. Yes, He created this entire universe simply for us to wonder at it, and wonder at His power. We are here to build a relationship with Him.

Worship God, have fun, and consistently better yourself as a person. Very simple I know... and there's a whole lot more to say on this, but that's my point of view.
