What are "Terry WADs?"

Recommended Posts

Aren't they basically just troll WADs? Is "Terry WAD" synonymous with "offensive WAD?" Or is it just referring to the WADs that have random images and earrapes?

All of the above. They are also known for being "trap" WADs in the sense that they would hide their true intent, surprising the user later on. They then later became outright malicious by abusing Skulltag's poorly thought out ConsoleCommand ACS function to rewrite the users config in a way that not only made it impossible to escape, but also made their client unusable later without resetting the config.

They all get called Terry WADs because they were either made by Terry or by kids who weirdly copied his behavior in a very mistaken attempt for attention.

from a surface level standpoint

they were a trend of wads to where they would "get you" and ruin your ears and fling yoj aroung in a box witn terry inside of it

probably made by edgy teens who probably think they're the class clown in school

Ah Terry Wads... the one type of wad that I hated more than anything else Doom related. Terry Wads usually have a pattern of starting out normal or even good and then it gets you with the Terry Trap. The Terry Trap is where you are teleported to a room with Terry's face plastered everywhere and you face a shitty looking JPEG enemy that instakills you and throws you around the room annoyingly and makes gross and annoying noises with annoying text.

Honestly the point of Terry wads, I think, was to make you think you're in for a normal Doom wad experience and then go "Sike!" and then annoy you.

I remember coming across that page recently and it left me wondering how exactly do terrywads usually operate. It mentions "terry traps" being "a Doom map equivalent of an Internet screamer" but does not elaborate further. IIRC I then started reading up on zip bombs and fell into a completely different wifi binge.

I'm aware that there's a delicate balance to strike not to give trolls undue attention, but as it stands the wiki page raised my curiosity rather than squashing it.

Zulk RS basically has the right of it.

A Terry Wad is a troll wad that usually starts out as a mediocre or even good-looking Doom map, but at some point, you'll try to open a door, hit a switch, or go through a teleporter, and then the Terry Trap happens, and you're hit with very obnoxious ear-rape and scripts designed to throw you around, kill and/or resurrect you again and again and/or flood your display with obnoxious text. Pretty much the only way to get out of a Terry Trap once it's sprung is either to kill yourself with the console, or restart the game.

If you want to see what these things look like in action, Aquarius199 has a bunch of vids where he goes through them, and finding a Terry Trap in a level is grounds for him to give the level the Seal of Crap.
