Hardest Experiences on I Am Too Young To Die

Some maps are extremely difficult. So difficult that they pose a challenge even on Doom's lowest skill setting, I Am Too Young To Die. This thread is to discuss those experiences. I'm talking about the times when the easiest mode in the game was mind-shattering hard. Feel free to share your own experiences of extreme difficulty on the lowest skill setting of the game. Not even the double ammo pickups and half damage can save you from these nightmares.

Is this a prompt for a Doom listicle or something? You can add every wad that hasn't implemented skill difficulties to the list.

Try telling us which maps you refer to instead of admitting your skill level needs improvement.

In an attempt to save this thread from itself:

Lots of maps that require a mid- to long-distance rocket jump become outright impossible on ITYTD, due to damage reduction.

I never had the need to go down right to ITYTD, most of the time when a map appears too hard - or just too un-fun - on the other skills making some tweaks with GZDoom's skill options yields a much more appealing result than going right down to baby mode.

Interesting. Do any source-ports have some sort of gameplay setting to address this (like normalizing self-damage, or boosting pushback on lower difficulties)? or is it just assumed that people play on HMP and UV?

Not that I know of. You can still play them in HNTR as well, because the damage reduction comes from ITYTD.

The very first time I booted up the game in 93 than promptly switched from Hurt Me Plenty down to Im Too Young To Die before finishing the first level and still got my ass handed to me over and over and over trying to get through the first episode. 😀

Definitely sounds like a skill issue. I recommend going back in time and telling your younger self to get good.

Don't worry, I used to choose ITYTD and then cheat all my way through with IDKFA + IDDQD. I have a vague memory of going into the E1M4 "maze" and just watching a pinky repeatedly try to bite me while I took no damage lol.

Not entirely on the same page as the topic, but in a similar vein: more maps should flip the script on the uv-or-bust mindset and make their hardest difficulties itytd/hntr 😋

That's actually not a bad idea. It would allow for more granual difficulty curve at the top end, essentially allowing you to play the UV difficulty with more ammo and less damage taken, but with the same monster placements.
