Do You Own a Device Capable of Playing Audio CDs?

Teeeechnically no since I lack any form of CD music player though I do use an external CD drive on my PC from time to time to listen to albums I've bought.

What smeghammer said. I love buying CDs and keeping the collection. This especially applies to exotic stuff like new obscure thrash metal bands, such as Carrasco (see pic below), which are usually only available at bandcamp; they offer MP3 download for sale and give it to you free when you buy a physical CD; of course not all new bands have physical CDs to sell. I'll always buy the CD if one is available but rip it to the computer for convenience listening; if not, download. I don't like streaming alone; for me, there must be an MP3/FLAC on the computer or a CD in the house.

Got some portable cd player, though no idea if it still works, haven't used it in years. Got some external cd/dvd drive for my computers. Got a cd player in my car, but have been too lazy to bring any cds there, although the previous owner had forgot one cd in it that I played once. Usually I listen to the radio in the car.

 

Also got a portable cassette player, which still works, despite the stop button is permanently pressed down. Though I no longer have any device I could use to record different music to my cassettes.

 

Got some vinyls too, but don't have any device for them.

I'm one of those weirdos that put together a CD collection a few years back, and occasionally adds CDs to it. They're all nicely ripped, metadata'd and organized as FLAC files on local storage.

My dad used to have (and still owns i think?) a disc collection of all sorts, CDs, Blu-Rays, DVDs, movies, series, music, it was a lot, although I would say it was everything but organized.

I have very few audio CDs, and even fewer devices explicitly meant to perform such a task.  All digital here.

A have several devices that can read CDs (boombox, computer, game consoles) but mainly I just listen to CDs in my car.

 

Most of my music listening these days is digital, but I like to own physical copies of my favorite albums.

I do have a cd player but honestly, I like cassette tapes more. There is a few artists I notice lately that put their music on cassettes, and that appeals to me much more for some reason. If I can get an album of, say, some post-rock, the cassette will sound warmer and more human than a cd. I even prefer cassettes to vinyls, honestly. But that may just be me.

The radio in my car is capable of only 2 things and that is BBC Radio 1 and reading CDs (no aux port).

 

I now own many CDs as hearing Harry Styles 14 times a day is not optimal.

I have a stereo but there's no room for it where I'm currently (and hopefully not permanently, although......) where I'm living now. I do think it's got it's uses, like a vinyl player and feels nice to have but....yeah.

 

Although I dunno how many of my burned CDs would work, last time I checked (8 years ago) there was already like 3 of them that wouldn't play/

My car stereo reads MP3 discs so I get the best of both worlds. It's nice to be able to make hours-long playlists or have the entire Gabriel-era Genesis catalog on 1 CD.

my car doesn't have an AUX because it's an old '05 civic and I haven't upgraded the stereo yet so I have a few CD's to listen to, my desktop computer no longer has one because my new case doesn't have the a bay, however my R51 Thinkpad is old enough to still have one so I copy MP3's over to it when I want to make a new mixtape for my car, I have a '98 Inspiron that can read them but it's currently in the process of being restored, parts are hard to come by for it lol

I have a player on my desktop PC and i also have a vinyl record player that can also play music CDs. I have a small collection of music CDs, but generally i don't listen to them on my PC beyond a single time. Usually after playing the album once i just rip the tracks and then listen to them on a more convenient way like on a big playlist on my PC or on my cellphone.

 

CDs are neat way to have a physical piece of the music and for collecting, and for that same reason i started collecting vinyl recently, but this is more of a niche thing, since having an mp3 track is always more convenient to listen to.

I still own players (to be more precise, I own devices that can play CDs but I need them for other things) but I don't really use them anymore for playing CDs. My digital music collection is far better organized and more convenient to use, especially in the car where changing CDs has always been a problem.

 

I rarely buy CDs these days, digital is cheaper anyway and I can make infinite backups so there's little danger of something getting lost.

My computer has a CDVD+-RW drive, and I own a PS2 and Dreamcast. I only have the CDs I've burned. My father over in another state has a huge CD collection, though.

 

Most of the music I listen to is on the ModArchive or from video games. I just don't typically buy music.

 

I do make music, but I don't release it on physical. Technically I release it as digital, if .SPC and S3XMODIT files count as digital.

I have a USB external CD reader and writer, for the purpose of reading CDs if I have any, and writing CDs, for playing games on Saturn and Dreamcast.

 

Also, Dreamcast, Saturn, Xbox can function as cd players, so that's cool!

I have numerous devices capable of taking CDs including almost every computer I have as an old Sony boombox I've had for awhile.

I'm even working on building a hi-fi system complete with cd changer.

 

CDs are the preferred and only way I buy music (except for the very occasional vinyl). There's something nice about having an actual thing, sometimes with awesome artwork and feelies.
The best part for me about owning physical disks, is once I have it, I have it. No one can restrict my access to it. I don't have to worry about juggling accounts, forgotten passwords, DRM, publisher shenanigans, a persistent internet connection or anything. They sit on my shelf, pleasing to look at, and if I want to listen to something or rip something to an mp3 player or whatever, it's as simple as grabbing it off the shelf.

TLDR: Yes I have CD players. Physical media tickles my fancy.

I have a cheap DVD player that I use to play my CDs through my soundbar, but it's too jank of a setup so I end up not using it. I do use the external BD drive I have for my PC though.

 

In the living room downstairs we have one of those record/CD/cassette/AM-FM radio players. I like how my metal CDs sound out of it but my grandpa's down there all day and I don't think he'd appreciate hearing Architects or Starset.

 

I really want to get a proper CD player of my own someday and I've been looking into it; found a couple good contenders but then it becomes a matter of finding space for it.

I bought most of my CD collection back in the day when I viewed buying music a necessity like

food and beer. Nowadays, can't afford the beer or the music (food not lookin' so good lately

either...) so it's a good thing I still have my CDs. That being said, about twenty years ago, I

ripped my collection of CDs, some cassette tapes and a bunch of LP vinyl down to mp3 files. In

general, I would listen to music only on my computer. For the last couple of years, I've taken to

transferring portions of this mp3 collection at a time to a smarty-pants phone which I bluetooth

to one of them cigarette lighter plug-in FM transmitters for my car. Once in awhile, I find some

CDs at the Goodwill.

 

I'd say the worst part of a CD collection is those damn plastic cases. After shipping my entire

collection across several state lines a dozen years ago, many of the boxes were "opened for

inspection", a fact of life using USPS Media Mail. Well, what they did is rifle through my

collection and selectively forfeited my most valuable individual CDs and then did a haphazard

job refilling my once ALPHABETICAL boxes and added a crappy taping job to those boxes before

finally getting them to my destination post office. Kindof makes me proud to be an American!

So, to never go through that again, I removed all CDs, backing jacket and front booklets from

the "jewel" cases and condensed my collection down to ONE INDIVIDUAL BOX. The cases they

came in went to the landfill. And this from someone who actually gives rip about the environment!

 

I've purchased digital music twice. Once was from Lee Jackson recently as a way of saying

"thanks" for using Goin' Down the Fastway in one of my deathmatch maps. Come to think of it, I

guess I'm supposed to download that music from somewhere... was it Bandcamp? I can't

remember; it's ON MY LIST of things I gotta do!

A stereo with CD player in my living room, a second stereo with CD player connected to my PC, and the PC's internal blueray/dvd/cd drive. CD is here to stay - streaming is a fad :D

I have original albums by different bands, as well as compilations. Playing The Angel by Depeche Mode being one of the closest to my heart. I also have a few games on the original CDs - Age Of Empires 2 and HOMM 3 and 4 come in mind. Earlier I had the first StarCraft and Brood war on an original CD too, but unfortunately it wore out, cause I simply couldn't stop playing it. And of course, Doom and Doom 2. But I eventually moved the wads on an USB stick when I no longer had a computer with a CD slot. 

 

That was until I finally found out there are outer devices you can plug in and play CDs. I bought one now and I use it. Where the discs are is a completely different question, but at least the originals close to my heart are here. The others might be worn out already.

All the computers I have ever used have a CD/DVD drive. I also have an old Philips CD/Radio player from the late 90's / early 2000's in my room, which I haven't used in months, but it still works (just need to clean the dust off).

Yeah, I still very occasionally listen to CDs. I have an external drive for my PC and also listen to them (and even the one cassette I own) in my truck. Which is from 2003 and still supports physical media. I stream music mostly, either albums I've bought on Bandcamp or through Spotify. But I have a few CDs from artists that I like that don't offer records. Listening to records after a long day is a great way for me to relax and decrease stress. I'm actually browsing this thread while listening to My Life in the Bush of Ghosts by Brian Eno and David Byrne on my turntable right now. I have an old Yamaha set from the 80's. I just use the amp and turntable, with modern JBL speakers. It sounds great and I have the cassette deck, CD player, and Radio with it, but they don't worry right. I've been meaning to get them fixed.

I have a HiFi system with 90s astetics, wifi, bluetooth, dab, fm, am, CD player, cassette player and record player all built in.

I also have a boombox with the same as my HiFi system and a collection of older HiFi systems in storage...

 

plus several external CD/DVD drives for PCs and several laptops and desktop computers with dvd drives

Yes, main PCs and older ones, Playstation 1,2,3, somewhere is Discman in the Cellar.

My Car only accepts USB Sticks, Cable and Bluetooth (i did not connect the Radio, it is awful in Germany and a pure Annoyance).

 

I prefer DRM free Files, so i can put them everywhere i can.

 

Discs would be the second Option.

But as Space is something you haven't unlimited, i decide hard about what i buy physically.

 

I am not so much into common popular Music, so i don't need Streams or Radio.

I can live with what i get here and there over the Years :D

 

As you do distrubute you Music online, i think everything is ok.

Have your Tygress Album here on my Phone i am writing on, on my PC at Work and the PC at Home.

 

So it is coincidently a good Example, i was able to hear it while cooking on Monday with my Phone and a Soundbox without having to handle a CD or other Device.
