slowfade Posted March 13, 2023 Hi. I finally got around sending my Doom 1 wad to idgames and it should be there shortly. So think it's about time I start recording the E1M8 pacifist I've mentioned. I'm using the latest Crispy Doom. I've few questions however... 1. It seems my doom.wad iwad is 1.2. I've heard it must be 1.9. Is it necessary when recording with modern source ports? Is the iwad upgrade tool on Doomgate.de safe to download and use? http://doomgate.de/files/duub/index.html Can it be run in DosBox? (I haven't downloaded it yet.) 2. After I reach the exit and the stats show up I just press the 'stop recording' key? It's that simple? 3. Do I use -longtics? (I don't even know if it exists in Crispy or not.) 4. Here's my game launching command. The wad is complevel 2 and I'm recording E1M8 in UV. Is there anything vital it's missing? crispy-doom.exe -warp 18 -skill 4 -complevel 2 -file confcons.wad -record mydemo 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
GarrettChan Posted March 13, 2023 I think for -longtics, it doesn't work unless using DSDA-Doom cl21 I think. Then, probably PWADs for Doom is more likely to be cl3, and warp is 1 [space] 8 instead of 18 stuck together. Other questions need somebody better than me to answer :p 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Shepardus Posted March 13, 2023 1. I think with Chocolate/Crispy Doom you can use "-gameversion ultimate" to override the version detection behavior and make the game behave like the Ultimate Doom executable, but to be on the safe side I'd recommend updating to Ultimate Doom if you can (I've never used the patchers you mentioned so I can't help you there). 2. Yes. By the way, if you need to restart the demo (i.e. you died), make sure you do so with Crispy Doom's level restart shortcut (bound to Home by default), not the use key (which will continue recording to the same demo and not a new demo). 3. I think Crispy Doom has -longtics (in dsda-doom it's supported in complevel 2-4 and 21). It's unclear to me whether it's allowed for vanilla WADs; I think 4shockblast posted about that not too long ago, I'll link it if I can find it. Recording defaults to shorttics, which is always accepted. 4. The -complevel parameter is a PrBoom+/dsda-doom thing (also ported over to Woof), for Crispy Doom you'll want to use -gameversion as I mentioned above. Also, for Doom 1 the -warp argument should be separated into two numbers, e.g. "-warp 1 8". 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Andromeda Posted March 13, 2023 (edited) Yeah, ideally you'd run using the latest IWAD (not counting the BFG/Anthology versions). The IWAD-Patcher by Peter Vaskovics is easy to use if you're on Windows. You can simply quit the game unless you want to do another attempt. No, -longtics should only be used (optionally) in MBF21 wads, which Crispy doesn't support. -complevel doesn't exist on Crispy and if you have more than one IWAD you should specify it, so the command should be something like this: crispy-doom.exe -warp 1 8 -skill 4 -iwad doom.wad -file confcons.wad -record mydemo (and warp is 1 [space] 8 in the case of Doom wads like Garrett said) Happy demoing! slowfade Posted March 14, 2023 (edited) Thanks for the knowledge everyone, now with my wads upgraded and launch command refined, I can start demoing in peace. Edit: Got my pacifist demo in about seven attempts; 12:07. With just a little bit riskier play I would've gotten sub 12! I may have to do that now... Feels good to have my first demo in the bag. I'll upload it at some point. Now I'll try for some strollers but I don't expect that to happen with my present skills (I can do it with many saves though). Edit2: It was 12:17 actually, so short is my memory. Nevertheless there's plenty to save in it. Edited March 14, 2023 by slowfade 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
slowfade Posted March 14, 2023 One more question: How to set up strollers properly? I'm using keyboard + mouse for strolling, moving with arrow keys, turning with mouse, left button for shoot, right button for use. I've toggled 'strafe on' off. As far as I can see that's all that's needed. And my autorun is off by default. Anything missing? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Shepardus Posted March 14, 2023 Stroller is typically done with -turbo 50 rather than disabling running; the -stroller parameter in dsda-doom acts as a shortcut for -turbo 50 and disabling strafing. I think walking without -turbo 50 is also valid, but you have to be careful not to accidentally use vertical mouse movement to go faster than what is allowed. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

So, maybe, Crispy can get confused if you put -complevel parameter while recording ig 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
slowfade Posted March 14, 2023 (edited) Ok, I'll add -turbo 50 to my settings just in case. Then, is there anything forbidding going even slower? With -turbo 50 the walking speed is excruciatingly slow but in areas needing precision it could bring some advantage. Can it be used? Andromeda Posted March 14, 2023 Yeah, you can go as slow as you want. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
