Me personally, I absolutely love shotguns. Even better if they're semi or even full auto! Don't worry though, still love the SSG obviously.

Under normal circumstances, I would have chosen shotguns, but I only really enjoy the shotguns from Doom and Quake. So I picked rocket launchers and grenade launchers instead since the high damage and room-clearing explosions is usually more useful.

For me it’s snipers, which I would also include railguns in this category. I prefer them in multiplayer the most.

47 would say that.

I always got a chuckle from folks in friendly matches who would always say "keep that fuckin' lightning away from Vyruss" or in blind comp 1v1's folks would compliment me with "your lightning scares the shit out of me."

Snipers but only in single player games. In multiplayer, I can't land a headshot on something staring me in the face, let alone someone actually moving.

Machine gunner - the Type 96/99 from Rising Storm might be terrible in pretty much every single way, but I can still make it work.

i love everything projectile, but Q1's grenade and rocket launchers are among the best of them.

i'm a big fan of unreal's biorifle in theory but prefer the flak cannon (it is not a shotgun) in practice

my guts tell me Flammenwerfer ist gut

my another kind of favourite weapon is bolt action rifle, it wasn't because it's statisfiying or anything, it's just because I'm a huge WWII and WWI game fan.

Shotguns and SMGs for me. I love being a berserk lunatic running right up into enemies' faces slamfiring buckshot and coating myself red. And in the game.

Shotguns and explosive trap type weapons like the laser tripwire and pipe bomb in Duke. Not nearly enough of the later. I will never forget the time I was playing a Duke map, got a keycard on a rooftop that spawned a swarm around me, ran back and lowered the elevator, chucked a pipebomb in said elevator and sent it back up.  Boom, everybody dead. Good times.

Over the years I've realized I like having the most powerful weapon over some arbitrary favorit :/

So the SSG in Doom, the sniper rifle in CoD, and the Flakker+Ahab in BL2.

Hook me up with a fast firing projectile weapon, the Doom 3 Plasma Rifle comes to mind.

I have a fondness for plasma and lasers, energy weapons in general, so "Other kinds of projectile-based weapons" it is.

Tools as weapons. Sawblades, nail guns, crowbars etc. Going Tool Time Tim Allen on these bitches.

Weapons that provide additional mobility options, e.g. Grapple Hooks, Rocket Jumping, etc. Being able to move around in a game in a way that feels fast, fluid and also shows a level of skill is always a joy to pull off.

Well we all love a nice shotgun but I like bows if available too, perfect silent headshots are so satisfying.

A simple question that's oddly difficult for me to give a straight answer to.

All games are different and my taste may vary on how effective they are or how they may feel on said game.

In short - weapons with an oomph!

Sometimes that's a bolt action rifle or sniper (Fallout series), often traditional shotguns are fun and effective (Doom, Stalker etc), a revolver can be satisfying to use (Red Dead, Doom mods, 7 days to die). At short bursts, assault rifles and smgs in many fps games.

I would like to see Melee become more plausible and effective in FPS games. Not easy to do though.

I instantly like any game that gives me a proper minigun or gattling gun to use.  The anticipation of the windup followed by sheer chaos as you shred anything you're faintly pointing at simply never gets old.  Bonus points for extra noise, extra muzzle flash, extra dust everywhere.

Railguns for sure. Love the pinpoint accuracy most have.

And watching your enemies die in a single powerful shot that either disintegrates them or gibs them is always a pleasure.

I think it depends on the implementation. Even the strongest minigun in the world will feel lame to use when it tickles enemies. Prime example being 40k Deathwing where not a single weapon feels good to use, despite many of them being "amazing" weapons in theory.

Meanwhile a random revolver feels great to use in Ion Fury despite being the starter weapon just because it is so satisfying to use and useful the entire game.
