What will be my legacy?

Recommended Posts

Same as many others here, DWS is one of the sites that really got me into mapping as more than a quick, passing trend for doom, years before I joined DoomWorld. Your mapping has been influential in my learning process of mapping for doom and I'm sure the same for many others, and your work running DWS so long term is inspirational; it is a staple of doom much in the same way One Man Doom was(?) that I will be sad to see go away one day as time goes on and we all age. You're a great person Bob, it was nice writing for your site in the short term that I did. Sorry I stopped having the time to keep up with it; the length you have kept it going is astounding to me, but it is a memory I carry with me fondly and I'd like to thank you for the experience. Here's to hoping for many good years in front of us, and maybe a map or three from you sometime in the future 😉

DWS was the only doom wad site I knew about as a kid, back when I was using JDoom for everything. I've got really fond memories with all the stuff I discovered on there, like Batman Doom and Doom 2 Xtreme Gold especially. being a kid in elementary school and savescumming my way through the bullshit encounters in Doom 2 Xtreme Gold's early levels... ahhh, doesn't get better than that

it was also only through playing all those mods on DWS that I got interested in mapping and modding myself, so it's not a stretch to say DWS is the reason I'm here making stuff at all :D

Glad to see you're still here man. So many people I've met over the years...

I remember years ago dreaming with play again Doom, and i discovered Doomsday (and another previously i can't remember)That was amazing and i started to download new content from DWS. After find something with a script that was not working properly for Doomsday i went to GZDoom and started modding, then i came to that forum and currently i download from here. But yes, it was the first place for custom content, so... thanks! (also is amazing read about your age, i'm 45 and sometimes i feel it's weird continuing enjoying one of our fabourite game ever :P so, thanks for that also)

I might rekindle my interest in modding after I retire. I'm not quite there yet but it's not far away either

hope to get back to making maps and doing reviews when I am finally able to retire, but life is short and unpredictable but I can dream

I am new to the doom community, and not a native English speaker, didn't know any English websites back then, so I don't know you but I do want to say that what you said above sounds like a dream come true to me.  Time spent doing what you love is a time spent well. Hope to see you keep making reviews and maps, and most importantly - have great time doing so.

I agree. There were so many pioneers that are now gone and I wish they knew how much their work was appreciated. Some have them have passed (like Jive). Some have simply disappeared - Looneytunedoomer and Wolfy and so many others. (Wolfy, btw, was one of the best mappers I ever knew. His works was like like the works of Michaelangelo - only in Doom maps). I wish I knew what happened to all these guy but they deserve to be celebrated for the groundbreaking work they performed.

Hey Bob. I remember you for sure and your wads. ;) I sometimes miss the old days when I first joined Newdoom and I was like the third person on there, then went exploring the web and found Doom Wad Station and Doomworld. It was the beginning of a great time, which has gone by so fast and so many people have disappeared and some have gone to the great void, like you mentioned Jive. I was just thinking about him and his colorful site and his great enthusiasm for the game and the many wads he collected... he was an interesting fellow and it was sad when he passed on.

As for Looneytunedoomer (Looney2ner), he's still around. Over the years I've talked to him sporadically and in recent months more frequently. He has an Aztec themed level that's in the works. He's retired now and doing well.

Unfortunately I never knew Wolfy, so don't know what happened to him.

I'm still alive Bob... For now anyway. I have you in my FB. it was Looney2ner back then. ;) Been working on some things, life got in the way and I kinda dropped off. Thanks for the mention. :D I'm over on Discord on Boingo's server.

Do you think you could ask Looney2ner (aka Kent) to get in touch with me? I lost track of him and haven't heard from him in years

Apologies for not even knowing you, but guessing on your story and the other's replies, you must have left a lot for the community since the 90s, so I must respect you for the legacy you have left, and I hope everyone else does the same.

@Brad_tilf DoomWadStation was a late 90s/early 00's revelation to me, until i ventured away from Doom. A decade later and it was still great. And later on it became a treasure trove of history for rare and sought after wads.

Safe to say that legacy has been omnious. Your dedicated skill and craft has made dozens of players, aspiring mappers and historians happy and all gratitude is in order.

It was one of the first doom sites I ever visited when I was a kid! got quake 2 TC and JarJar's last pineapple fritter from your site, probably the very first custom wads I ever played... fond memories.

I think we should honour people's work more often while they can see it, it's always sad to see someone die AND THEN people decide to make homage threads about how awesome their work was... and everybody can see that except the one who is not here anymore.

I agree with you. I wish Jive was around to see how people appreciate what he did, even though, at the time some of it was controversial

I'm a bit different to other's in the thread in that I don't have much exposure to DWS (at least that I can remember). I do very much feel the power of the connection between artist and experiencer (artistee?) which is very notable when it comes to level design. So the legacy for me is in your maps and what you tried to communicate there. Looking at Doomwiki I don't think I've played many of your maps but I'm going to make it a point to go back and play them all. Maybe I'll leave little reviews here or something.

That would be cool. It's always nice to hear what people think. :-)

My personal recommendation is Bloodworks. Unquestionably my best map - lots of fake 3d stuff - VERY hard. Or Mitnal - again - lots of 3d effects. Not as hard as Bloodworks.

I definitely have visited your website several times, espeacially the reviews, and while it was never a staple of mine, I appreciated all the effort that was put into it. Beyond that, I definitely recognize your name when it's thrown around, and I always heard it in a degree of respect.

Your efforts are definitely appreciated, even if not all of us have a particularly cool or compelling story about it. If it means anything, without your site (among others), this old sidedef wouldn't even be in these forums now. One of the first things I did upon recently rekindling my flame with classic Doom was revisit DWS.

Thanks. I hope you enjoy the visits. :-)

As others have said, I knew of Doom Wad Station years before I joined the Doomworld community, (which wasn't until 2009). It gave me access to many levels and informed me about them: levels that I would otherwise have missed entirely or never heard of. A wonderful effort. Thank you. Appreciated. There were far fewer ways to access Doom mods/levels back then than there are now.

I sorta feel like there are fewer sites dedicated to the game now - This one (doomworld) being one of them but most of the sites dedicated to Doom have disappeared or are no longer maintained. :-(

I don't think it's maintained any more but onemandoom is still online. http://onemandoom.blogspot.com/

I try to keep current. ;-)

I'd really like to thank all of you who responded to this post. I've been a part of this community in one way or another for decades and I'm glad that my own personal body of work and the website that was spawned from that has brought so many of you pleasure over the years. I'm not done (at least not yet) but it may be a bit before my next map or my next review. I do stuff as time allows. :-)

I really would like to do another map though so if anyone has a suggestion on a theme or something to that effect, I'm all ears. :-)

It might even be fun to revisit some of your old maps and see what you can do with old themes and experiments. That's what I ended up doing with an ancient map I never released, and it ended up being the basis for my first modern Doom map (which I only recently completed here). It was a lot of fun to just let the mapping lead me, rather than trying to plan ahead. Then again, not everyone rediscovers their muse by trying to bridge the old and new.

I also found it fun to just watch YouTubers like MtPain27 to see what they gush about, and are critical about. It helped me reaffirm that it's about letting your inner voice speak however it wants. There's a lot of joy in seeing a willing audience play your map if you put your heart into it, and you don't even have to aim higher than just "let's have some fun". So I'd say go at your own pace, and remember that you're already ahead of the curve, given how few people even have a body of work which others remember fondly.
