So this is only the first episode then?

Not really. The complete first episode would be a little different with maps in different slots and new maps entirely. This is just a showcase of most of the maps made hoping to get playtesting feedback from anyone outside of the project's development; possibly have insight on what directions to go about on what's missing or what's needed. Though it's only released like this at all since I made deadlines at the start and while things have changed since then I still wanted to release something and keep myself accountable.

Hi, I could play the first two maps, both really fun with no issues anywhere as far as I'm concerned, but then Crispy crashed upon trying to load E1M3, and it also crashes on every other following map. Unfortunately, Crispy doesn't send a message telling about what's the crash about, it says it stopped working, so I don't know what's causing the problem. DSDA on the other side does load all maps apparently.

Is your Crispy-Heretic up to date? This project helped spur a lot of updates for the port.

Yes it is, 5.12.0

You need to download the latest auto-build from http://latest.chocolate-doom.org. The version number is the same but its been updated even just today to support ANIMATED lumps. It's far ahead of last year's base release. Apologies for not being clear about that.

This wad is seriously good! And the architecture and texturing are superb, great job! And it's also very fun to play (I really liked the wand + phoenix rod combo in the first map).

Here's my playthrough of the first map with some sporadic written commentary (found a little visual bug at the end). I'm sorry that I used GZDoom. I love Crispy Heretic, but I wanted to be able to comment while I play :P But I used the software renderer in any case (I still have to fine tune the graphical settings though)

Let me know if this kind of playthrough is useful and I'll continue recording as I play the rest of the maps! (the video should be available in half an hour or so)

@Fernito Thank you! The missing textures near the end are intentional as I was thinking of it like a magic desk that "stretches" to accommodate your reach while on the throne. The missing secret is

in the firey room near the green key.

Oh and you'll have to re-download the WAD for the V3 since E1M5 was missing exit line triggers before, sorry about that (very last minute submission but a greatly cool & unique one).

And yes the playthrough is useful, please continue! Especially for feedback that isn't from me for the other mappers' maps.

Great! I'll continue posting videos then :)

Just out of curiosity, how many levels are planned for the final release?

At least two episodes worth. If I can get a map concept going in particular then I have a good reason to go for three full episodes. The episodic structure makes things more complicated.

Liked the first map very much.

The second map doesn't strike me as that great... it's too huge, too full of corridors, too dispersive. In fact I stopped when there is that ambush after using the green key. Too many monsters just for the sake of carnage. It's too much on everything.

Have yet to try the other maps, but the second one is not as good as the first one, I can tell you.

Another amazing map! Luckily I didn't play in black plagues, there's no way I could have made it out of the scenario fight :P

Spoiler

I loved the Zelda references! :D

E1M3 and E1M4 are among the most visually impressive Heretic maps I've ever seen. I also love all the cool vanilla tricks, sometimes you even forget it's "only"  a limit-removing wad. Very fun to play too, super intense fights. Amazing work, I'm loving this so far! :D

I know I've said it already, but I wanna insist on it: not only are the architecture and texturing jaw-dropping in these maps, but I've also never had so much fun playing Heretic maps before. Hands down the best Heretic mapset I've ever played. The moment this gets officially released, I'll be the first one nominating it for a Cacoward :)

There is more detailed written commentary in the videos as usual.

@Fernito Thank you for the esteemed praise! Thank you as well for a completed playthrough of E1M5, and it's probably good you were playing that in GZDoom (ghost monster feet blasting aside) as that map can get choppy in Crispy. As for E1M6 afaik you have to use the wings to access the exit, and your inventory should have been full of wings as you pick them up along with the blue key.

This does look great. I think I'll wait until a later release, but I'm looking forward to playing it. From just scanning the video playthroughs, I'd say whatever you're doing, keep doing more of it. Love the openable chests, the in-map texts, the lush outdoor scenery, and all the flying.
