Captain red pants Posted March 26, 2023 I think most people here know about the infamous doom 3d0 port and the story of how it got that way, but given people's tendency to get Doom to run on everything, did anyone ever have another go at a 3d0 port that's actually playable (bonus points if it kept the music)? It sounds like something someone would try... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted March 26, 2023 Yes: Phoenix Doom And if you meant to stay on the 3DO platform, then OptiDoom: 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Captain red pants Posted March 26, 2023 Those are cool projects but it looks like they're people fiddling with the existing 3d0 doom source code, where as I was hoping for a port where they stared from scratch more or less, from a hypothetical universe where the 3d0 never got a doom port. I'm curious if modern coders could make something closer to OG doom on the 3d0's hardware. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Blzut3 Posted March 27, 2023 Would be surprised if you could revert the Jaguar Doom changes and get something actually playable than could be achieved by optimizing the existing code. Those changes made the game run slightly faster (simpler algorithms in play sim) and the content cuts reduced memory requirements. The latter being particularly important on disc based systems. Granted "closer to OG doom" can be somewhat subjective, so perhaps some custom designed for 3DO engine could do subjectively better if whatever alternative cuts are made are simply more agreeable to the user. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
