Doom 2- Kill the ten Wizards - My first map

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I recently had the urge to create a map for D2, something I've always wanted to do, so I downloaded Doom Builder 2 and gave it a try, would be very grateful for any feedback on my wad!

Compat mode was zDoom, not made with freelook in mind

Also I couldn't figure out how to change the music although I did try in slade and as far as where wads are generally uploaded for people to get I couldnt figure out the idgames portal thing lol so I uploaded to google drive which i hope is acceptable

Music can be added by importing a MIDI to your wad file and giving it the relevant name! For a MAP01, name it D_RUNNIN

Thanks mate, I still find a lot of this confusing but will look into it!

Yellow door is glitching, so I got softlocked.

Noted, will take a look and reupload, thanks for feedback!

Edit- just replayed using gzdoom and door worked ok for me, what source port/what glitchness happened when you tried?

GZDoom 4.10.0.

Door just instantly closing thru the floor and then struggling to open, moving only a bit.

Still seems that the YK door won't open.

On another note, there were too many stony chambers, not so bad in the beginning, but quite annoying when the tunnels become incredibly claustrophobic.

Some decently-detailed locations though, like the flesh bridge.

Monster placement seemed generally geared toward difficulty but not necessarily in a way that's fun (read: that stupid Cyberdemon fight and the Pain Elementals basically guaranteed to be out of reach in the flesh bridge area).

Ahhh damn i really cannot figure out how to fix it! And noted, sorry it annoyed you, I suppose I wanted to keep consistency but I honestly didnt really know what to do texture wise with that, any pointers you could give me? Glad you liked the flesh bridge! And yes i agree with you on that, I was thinking last night what is it about doom and other games that I find enjoyable and for me its the grind of overcoming somewhat unfair and dickish odds, but I can see that not everybody would enjoy that so I completely agree with you, and I wanted the Pain Elementals to create added pressure on the player with the distance, do you think they should be removed or reduced in number or placement? I really appreciate you taking the time to play the wad and do a write up, I will definitely take into account what you have said with the next map I make, cheers!

Edit- Also did a custom song play for you when you loaded it up?

No, just D_RUNNIN.

I just found the way the Pain Elementals ended up in the center so that surrounding enemies caused them to float up to be quite annoying. Either taking them out or placing them in a position to where they're much less likely to take fire from other enemies.

Where textures are concerned.....I guess you could do things like place landmarks every so often: flesh piles, hung humans. Then maybe in certain locations, there could be that sort of flesh texture you see in windows (beige with meat in the center), red pillars on the sides standing out every so often like mine supports, and so on. It's not an easy thing to do, for sure, but if you want a player to go a certain direction (though this was linear to be fair) these sorts of details can signpost one intended action or another..
