Teedre Posted March 30, 2023 I was casually playing through some wads made in 1994. Was curious if anyone knows any wads made in 1993 or at least the first pwad. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Phoenyx Posted March 30, 2023 There are no 1993 PWADs, but there was a recent(-ish) thread about the 25 oldest PWADs dating back to March 1994 :) 11 Quote Share this post Link to post

SilverMiner Posted March 30, 2023 Since the game out by the end of 1993, it's unlikely for it to have mods that early 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Murdoch Posted March 30, 2023 (edited) My recollection is that DEU was the first editor released, on January 26th 1994 according to my searching. Anything predating that probably didn't have the power to do much. The initial editors were created via reverse engineering. id didn't release their own editor or information about Doom's internal workings. The game itself was of course released December 10th, 1993. Thus, it is safe to say there are no user made wads dating back to 1993, save perhaps some early experiments gathering dust on floppy discs in the attic of one of the early hacker's houses. Endless Posted March 30, 2023 The very first custom DOOM PWAD in history was Origwad by Jeffrey Bird, it was released in March 1994. This level was made before editors even existed so it was made from scratch by hand. How exactly? I am not sure, probably using some sort of coding language and creating it line by line of code, but would love to learn more about it. The level is as rudimentary as it gets, with only two rooms joined by a single door, yet considering this was made back when we barely knew anything about the WAD format, had no tools, and the source engine wasn't even out yet, it was impressive as hell. The second PWAD ever made was CROSS.WAD by Alistair Brown, and it was also the first DM level ever. The first PWAD made with editing tools was STONES.WAD by Michael Kelsey. It was made using one of the early versions of DEU, which only supported Doom I. CROSS.WAD actually helped with the creation of DEU thanks to the BSP calculations. Doom was released in December 10, 1993, so there was very little time left to develop anything during that year, but it only took a few months for the fans to start creating levels and tools for the game. It all is fascinating as fuck. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post

I think it was made by editing the HEX code, which is just insane (and cool as heck). If I have to guess, there was a lot of trial and error and agony in it.
