Windows obfuscates things ostensibly to make it all easier

In my experience, everything that operating systems like Windows do to make things "easier" for novice users universally end up causing more confusion for the users it's trying to help. It's obvious that no one at Microsoft uses a default Windows setup.

Playing DOOM with source ports that can't distribute the game data alongside a release is simply going to require more computer literacy than playing a game directly from Steam or an App Store, especially if mods or PWADs are involved. Not sure how this is the GZDoom (or any other team's) fault.

Source ports like Doom Retro, Odamex, and probably a couple of others I can't think of right now have file selection dialogues that let you navigate to a location where you have your files and tell it "this is where my IWAD/PWAD/whatever is." Odamex is building out an (admittedly pretty barebones) launcher utility inside it where you can pick an IWAD, some PWADs, and hit "go" without messing with an external launcher utility. All of this is possible and has already been done but whenever I suggest "hey maybe things could actually be more user friendly" I consistently get huge pushback from people who have been completely mired in the world of Doom for decades and struggle with understanding new player experiences.

What I mean is what you alluded to by people failing to even understand the filesystem these days. Even with the launchers you suggest, people struggle with concepts like IWAD, PWAD, locating their own files, and order of loading. I agree that internal launchers are a good direction, Doomsday 2.x has one that's very slick IMO, but at a basic level it will still be at least somewhat more complex than a "normal" game.

What are we even discussing? The Unity version already has a launcher, the only reason why this came up is a person wanted to pull files directly out of the manager, which by its nature is already an advanced concept. The conversation rather starts and ends there.

The problem is that there's no real standard for where to actually put user data beyond "chuck it somewhere in the user directory"

Microsoft has actually had pretty clear guidelines on where to put things for decades.  Although Vista added a few more categories of things.  However, Windows developers and users don't like being told what to do so here we are with people begrudgingly adopting as little or as much of the recommendations as desired.

I do get that it's a little annoying that every operating system is designed around the concept that users shouldn't have to poke around in there.  Particularly when you have software where the user needs to provide the game data, and the way things were designed assumes that both pieces come from the same vendor.

It's a standard that's existed since Windows 2000, and has actually always been for Unix. You don't modify your execution directory with custom data, it's a very straightforward security premise.

Windows  NT 4.0 too. But even today some software developers don't get it. Even today in enterprise environments there are applications where it is necessary to give normal users modify rights on machine data. Sad but true.

Oh wait this is definitely an April Fool’s thing, never mind.

It continues!

Not only did he force himself to play TNT for this, he did so in that painful aspect ratio. Well, at least GZDoom seems to handle vertical orientation more gracefully than dsda-doom:

I figured the first one would be a one-off for April Fool's Day, but hot damn, it looks like he's going to do the whole IWAD this way. It's cool that he's found a method that makes covering TNT in a video form that's interesting for him.

I didn't even know I had "No Rest for the Living", but there it was in the DOOM 3 BFG edition files.

It's great.  NRFTL makes excellent use of stock textures, has evil enemy placement, and nice pacing.  There's a lot of cool little details in the architecture.  I'm learning a lot about tightening up the scope of my maps, detailing the geometry, and using monsters effectively instead of just chucking a hoard at you.  I'm a bit stuck on "March of the Monsters".  Harsh but fair.

My only criticism is that some of the levels could use a bit more texture variety to help orient the player.  There's too much brown and tan in some of the levels.

Speaking of: Does anyone know where the pwads downloaded via the bethesdanet front are stored? I looked all over the Doom 2 common folder so it could be anywhere for all I know

idk about bethesdanet, but if you have DOOM 3 BFG edition from steam, NRFTL is in it's local files.  It's NERVE.wad.   sorry if that doesn't help you.

I was disappointed that he brought the BFG into the last level... I mean, I did, but then I ran straight into the imp pile and died. On second attempt I realized that the Cyber fight is actually a lot of fun with just the rocket launcher.

Oh hell yeah, Hexen 2

Just like you I love Civvie 11 so it was natural for me to watch his video on it. I was ecstatic when it came out might I add...

Gameplay wise ? *phew... pure 24K gold for me, really explained everything these levels have to offer with his unique style.
