I've grown to like FreeCommander, although I've used Double Commander and Krusader while under Linux as well. Going about any OS without an OFM is really inconvenient IMO. 7-Zip's FM can serve as a basic double-panel file manager in the absence of anything else.

IrfanView has become indispensable for me, as Windows' default image viewing app has become worse and worse over the new versions, dropping support for legacy formats like PCX. I'm mostly using WinAmp (a very old version at that) for music, again since Windows' default is just a poor excuse for a media player.

I really liked the old versions of Paint/MSPaint, but the new ones have dropped many good features including proper treatment of indexed palettes. Under Linux there's a really cool MSPaint clone called KolourPaint -- it's a nearly carbon copy of the old MSPaint that came with Win98, plus a couple of extra useful features on top of it. I've not found a Windows port of this though.

IrfanView is indeed a wonderful program that I use a lot for pretty much any image manipulation. A definite must-have.

But if you liked the old Windows Photo Viewer, it is still possible to use it in Windows 10. Instructions are, e.g., here (own risk; don't recall if it was exactly these instructions I followed, but they look similar). I did this so long ago I had forgotten that it wasn't still the default viewer. I still find it the most convenient program for simply viewing images.

A program I have used a lot over the last couple of years is PDFill Tools. The free version is powerful and easy to use; and I have never felt the need to get one of the paid versions. If you need to do anything with PDF files, this is the first place to look.

For all zipping requirements I use 7zip. It just gets the job done with no fuss, and there are many options.

Notepad++, i used it daily for taking work notes. Writing todo lists and other similar tasks.

Obsidian, Notetaking software compatible with Markdown. I used extensively for work and for taking care of university tasks.

Zotero, free citation manager. I used it daily for university work. It is certainly the college student best friend.

I'll launch into the topic by listing my own "go-to" software - Total Commander by Christian Ghisler. This software has been around since the Windows 3.1 days, when it was known as Windows Commander. It's a dual-pane file commander, but with tabs that let you take it way beyond dual-pane functionality. Can't live without it.

I know someone that uses it and it has the same gui as if they were using it on 3.1.  I have no idea why he doesn't update the version.

Who knows? Maybe he's pining for the olden days. Gotta admit, the old 3.1 interface was outstanding for its day. That's when I bought into it. (User license #224.)

Oh yeah, he's been using it for 20 years yet refuses to buy it.  I'm not a non-pirate but I'd definitely buy something I use multiple times a day.

While I understand your original question was system management it is quite clear this thread has turned into a discussion on favorite software so here are some of my favorites.

WINE - Indispensable when it comes to gaming.

DOSBOX Staging - The built in fluidsyth support and MT-32 emulation support makes it preferable to other DOSBOX forks.

FFMPEG - My original motivation for downloading this was to convert old tracker music to MP3 but I have discovered how useful it is for converting other filetypes.

Dolphin (Filemanager) - Like all KDE programs it is unreasonably feature bloated. The vast sorting options and in-line Konsole support make file management a breeze.

Nano - While I will admit Vim is better overall, my infrequent editing of text files would not benefit from learning Vim.

That's quite all right. I'm enjoying the hell out of it, and I'm learning a few things at the same time.

Terminology, Emacs, Mutt (or Claws), Element, and some fbpanel instances running in Sawfish. I suppose Firefox as well. I only really use a file manager (SpaceFM for me) when I'm sorting through images in bulk. I do most things in a terminal window or Emacs.

And I suppose *technically* things like bash and ls.

In no particular order whatsoever:

  • Notepad++
  • 7-Zip
  • GIMP
  • foobar2K
  • Waterfox (Edge and Chrome can fuck off for all I care)
  • ImageGlass (Image viewer)
  • SumatraPDF
  • GoldWave (I own a lifetime license, which explains why I don't use Audacity)
  • Fan Control (mostly for the chipset fan on my motherboard; I set it to 45%. All the other case fans are set at 100% via the UEFI/BIOS.)
  • Hasleo Backup Suite (Macrium Reflect FREE will be discontinued next year, so this is the next best thing. Now, if only I could figure out how to best use this thing..)

There's more, but I've only listed the essentials.

For people mentioning Total Commander, can that be run in place of Windows file explorer when Windows starts up?

  • 3 weeks later...

Is it okay if I tell you my go-to software to remove, that i couldn't use my system with?

* Windows 10 1804 with ethernet unplugged so it wont force me to upgrade.

* Powershell remove stupid bloat, because microsoft wont let me do it normally, they blocked it. No, the mail app isn't a "part of windows", its just garbage.

* Also remove cortana, onedrive, my people, xbox bar, etc

* Run shady .exe to remove edge because I can't otherwise, microsoft fucked that up too because if I remove it I'm just a dirty virus creator APPARENTLY

* Stop and disable all the update services, and delete them with registry editor

* Disable windows defender in group policy editor, and delete the service with regedit (i think? i don't remember lol)

* Turn off firewall and try to ignore windows screaming at me to turn it back on

* Removing/disabling other misc stuff i don't remember

* I do install steam, chrome, and paint.net however.

That's pretty much it, very simplified :)

I know its not "secure" or whatever, but i prefer to have full control over my os, like a sandbox!
