How to get back at it at Doom? | I Have not played doom in a year

Recommended Posts

Hi there people of the world!, Greetings to all of you!

So a year and a half ago, I decided to take a break from Doom and gaming in general. It was a tough and difficult decision (In fact, I know I received messages for playtests from some of our fellow mappers and I completely sincerely apologize if I wasn't able to play your maps!) but I really needed time off to pursue my education and my other hobbies for a while! Well now that I pretty much have my summer to do more doomy things and moving forward, I want to Doom balanced in my life!

Now on to the point of discussion, I pretty much hilariously deleted all of my source ports, doom mods, wads, and anything related to doom a year ago, pretty much only keeping the steam copies of most of the games (except doom 64 which I am actually yet to play). How do I get started again? Anything new with doomworld lately? What are some of the new things like new mods or interesting to know and follow? and most importantly, how are you guys?

Smooth Doom on MBF21 (SD21) is relatively new, basically just Smooth Doom but it runs on any sourceport that supports MBF21. The most recent Cacowards might give you an idea of some other stuff to check out too.

While I haven't played it yet (still working my way thru my own backlog of wads), but I heard Nostalgia by Myolden is pretty great. A mix between 90's-2000's aesthetics with modern polish and actually good level design

One that I did get the pleasure to play thru this year's valentine's day via an Odamex co-op playtest was another Myolden directed megawad; PUSS XXIV: Lover's Quarrel. A Valentine's Day themed community project by the fresh team Pineapple Under The Sea, it's designed with Co-op and Deathmatch in mind and has possibly one of the most zany and fun resource packs I've seen used in a wad since Christmas.

And if you're into Vanilla Dooming then the ACE Engine should peak your interest, if not pick at your brain. ACE is, to put it as simply as I can muster, a wad that you load into the o.g. dos executable that hacks it into an advanced engine via Arbitrary Code Execution ala SMW. In it's current public version it just enables dehacked files to be loded in by just -file-ing a wad of the same name (e.g. loading Rudy2.wad will also autoload the associated deh) without having to make a whole new exe just for it. this is already an incredibly powerful tool if you ask me, but kgsws is working hard on bringing in decorate into ACE (as in ZDoom's decorate) to make all new possibilities happen with vanilla Doom!
