RUMOR: Live-action Doom series in the works for Peacock streaming service

Recommended Posts

Just as a disclaimer: the news here is from Giant Freakin Robot, which means to absolutely take the veracity of this news with a massive grain of salt.

Seriously, it’s one of those “geek culture news sites” akin to We Got This Covered that’s notorious for putting out articles that are known for some serious BS (either articles that are a whole lot of nothing or really don’t have any sources whatsoever, usually both). Hell, GFR recently posted news that a sequel to Dredd 2012 was finally happening (you can imagine how pissed I was about how said article was just a whole lot of nothing, especially considering that’s still one of my favorite films of all time).

But yeah, the article in question is just more nothing with virtually no sources. The only news there is that this proposed Doom series will be live-action and on NBC’s Peacock and that’s it; nothing about the cast and crew that might be involved (nothing about the prospective writers, producers, etc.).

Additionally, said series is supposed to reboot things again (as in, there’s no ties to the 2005 movie or Annihilation).

(And you may ask, what about that Masters of Doom series that was being made a while back?

Supposedly a pilot was made, but it never got picked up and it’s currently unlikely it’ll ever see the light of day.)

But yeah, if it does turn out that a Doom series is indeed in the works, I honestly don’t really know how to feel about it.

And yeah, it’s one of those things that could really go either way; it could end up as either that Last of Us series or as another Halo series.

Either way, video game adaptations are now being seen more than ever as the next frontier of adaptations to explore (especially with the latest success of that Illumination Mario movie).

All I really hope is that whoever is involved at least has not only an understanding and respect for the source material, but also has the chops to really know how to make it work in this particular presentation.

(Not only that, this series could work if it’s more in the vein of Doom 64 with a focus on suspense and atmosphere. I’m sorry about this, but if one really wants nothing but Hardcore Henry except futuristic guns and demons being blown up, then I’d probably just go watch a playthrough of Doom 2016 or Eternal; or better yet, actually play those myself.)

Anywho, thoughts on this?

(And please be civil about discussion on this development, no matter if this rumor ends up debunked or not.)

Honestly don’t get the obsession with turning a game into a movie or series that revolves around a character that does not talk. Wolfenstein or Quake II/IV would make more sense than Doom. Wolfenstein has enough content that could be used to make an interesting series, especially if they kept it in WW2 and not the future timeline from TNO series. Quake II/IV make it obvious there’s a larger scale war going on with more than 1 guy vs a horde of demons.

Hope this is true. Either it's good, against all odds, and that's great. Or it's horseshit and I won't bother watching it. There is no losing scenario for me if they do make a series. I'm not one of the people who feel like a bad adaptation or sequel somehow ruins the good stuff that came before it, nor do I feel the need to watch a series with bad reviews and/or bad first couple of episodes.

Peacock is a streaming service from NBC/Universal.

It was one of those services that cropped up in the popularity of Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.

Yes, the first one with Karl Urban and The Rock in 2005 and Annihilation, based on the 2016 game but with a female protag, in 2019.

I actually don't think I've seen a single rumour from Giant Freakin' Robot ever come true. The Farmer's Almanac is more trustworthy than that shit.

Wolfenstein could be a cool fit for TV but it'd have to be played right. IMO at least Wolf is about a mix of historical drama and science-fiction/paranormal stuff. You'd have to make sure not to make it too goofy or too serious or else you run the risk of pissing people off. Even Nu-Wolf would be neat but as a TV series that might be too close in concept to Man In The High Castle.

Honestly... if you wanted to take a classic game and turn it into a TV series, XCOM is right there. Hell, it's already based off an old 1970s British TV show, giving it a fresh coat of paint would be real interesting.

Not that I plan to watch this or even pay attention to it (I'm really not a TV or movie guy), I'll be that guy and say that for all its flaws, the second Doom movie with the female lead really wasn't that bad...

Ten-to-one they'll have learned their "lesson" from the last movie and the plot will firmly keep women in the "men's possessions" camp, if they're trying to hop on the The Last of Us bandwagon.

The problem with annihilation wasn’t that a woman was in the lead role; the problem was that the movie was garbage. It has more references to the game than the 2005 film, sure, but it has just as much of a bogus plot as the 2005 film that you could take any reference to Doom and replace it with something else and it would’ve changed very little. Neither film seemed to have any real faith in the source material.

Only way this could be good was if it was seven 50mn episodes, short and concise, AND was done by the same team that did the "Ash vs evil dead" series. Gore, action, respecting the original material, and humor. Otherwise it's dead in the water.

(I just wanted a "good", fun 1h30 movie in 90's style...)

based on the 2016 game

Barely tbh

Sounded like a Doom 3 inspired game to me, given the horror aspect

It was also wayy too cringe

Regardless the new series will likely not be any good tbh, unless the director is a big doom fan.

Is there any real demand for live-action Doom stuff? Who knows, it's probably just a rumor. If they really had a new Doom series coming out, they'd probably officially announce it.

And no one will ever watch this legitimately, because no one actually pays for 10+ streaming services like these companies think. What the hell is on Peacock that would warrant me subscribing to it over Netflix or Paramount+? I don't even know if Peacock is available where I live (it's not; it's the streaming arm of the NBC in America).

This is worse for consumers than the pay cable/satellite TV model and people don't realise it.

Oh right, this is about a Doom TV series. Just because The Last of Us got it right doesn't mean other game-to-TV adaptations can get it right. The Last of Us is a rare exception. I don't like this trend of adapting video games into other forms of media. The medium of video games is just too different from other forms of media for the transition to work most of the time. A film adaptation would be better, but they've already tried it 2 times and fucked it up. I would watch a faithful film adaptation of Doom 1 but it's never going to happen.

The only way I could see a Doom TV series working is if it takes place before the invasion, focusing on the moral and political intrigue that the pre-invasion events create and culminating in the gate opening. There's only so much interesting stuff you can squeeze out of a marine (or a group of marines) shooting demons - it worked twice in the shorter "one-shot" format of a movie, but the same in a 40-minute episodic format is bound to get stale.

This was also rumoured back in 2019 along with the Masters Of Doom adaptation that has never materialised.

I’ll honestly believe it when I see it but if it has to happen then I hope they use the main story from 2016 and Eternal.

I was curious about that. The idea of adapting the events of the book into some kind of meta-narrative documentary series or just a straight film of sorts similar to Pirates of Silicon Valley or The Social Network could be interesting. As for this possible new Doom series, I hope for the sake of the show's writers that the plan is to explore the lore established in the nuDoom games; which would be the better option since it gives the writers a foundation to work from, rather than the paper-thin narrative of Classic Doom.

As far as I'm concerned, indifference is the correct answer.

Nope! Specifically not based on the 2016 game. They only had the rights for Doom 93, Doom II, and Doom 3. Anything developed since ZeniMax acquired id Software was not included in the IP they could use, so no Doom Slayer, no Samuel Hayden, no Olivia Pierce, etc. But they could use a Dr. Betruger.
