I asked ChatGPT to bless us with inner monologues of the Doom Guy

Recommended Posts

"Write me a passage, in first-person, about Doom Guy after he returned to earth and saw what the demons had done to his pet bunny Daisy. Describe his angst and vengeance, with gory detail as he slays the monsters bringing hell to this earth."

I stepped out of the teleporter and onto the ruins of my hometown. The stench of brimstone and rot filled my nostrils. The sky was a sickly shade of red, and the ground was scorched black from the demon's flames. I had returned to Earth, and it was a living hell. But that wasn't what broke me. What broke me was what I saw next. I found her in what was left of my old house. My sweet, innocent Daisy. She was mutilated and torn apart, her blood staining the floor beneath her. The sight of her filled me with a primal rage. I grabbed my shotgun and marched outside to face the demons responsible for this atrocity. I was a man possessed, fueled by a need for revenge. I tore through the demons like they were paper, ripping them limb from limb. The more I killed, the angrier I became. They had no right to do this to my home, to my people, to my Daisy. I waded through the rivers of demon blood, my eyes red with fury. I smashed their skulls and ripped their spines from their bodies. I wanted them to feel the same pain that they had inflicted upon me. But no matter how many demons I killed, it wouldn't bring my Daisy back. It wouldn't undo the pain and suffering they had caused. I was a broken man, fueled by nothing but rage and despair. I knew then that I would never stop until every last demon was dead. They had brought hell to Earth, but I would be the one to send them back. I would make them pay for what they had done, even if it meant sacrificing everything I had left.

Anyone else bored with these feckless AI threads or is it just me? I'm no longer curious or impressed by these stupid things, especially considering all they really do is scan the internet for existing stuff actual people have made, scramble it all together and burp it back up in a jumbled, uninspired mess.

The novelty has well and truly worn off.

Agreed brother. I saw a video of a guy talking about AI generated music and i commented i refused to listen out of sheer principle. That i essentially considered it anti-music. AI has many uses for things such as streamlining enhancements to graphics or generating content that otherwise couldn't be done (fallout and elder scrolls modders have done great work generating voice lines with the original actors) but when it comes to fresh new creative content, i want nothing but human generated.

The battle over, I surveyed the field,

And all about me saw the bloody flesh

Of shapes demonic sundered at my hand.

I had not seen such carnage anywhere,

Not in the streets of Philadelphia,

Where water-protests had provoked my captain

To break whatever goodness was in him

And order us to shoot men down like beasts,

Provoking me, in turn, to crack his chin.

Could he have seen Hell's legions loosed on Earth,

He might have joined the crowd and chanted, "Water!"

Knowing that Hell, and with it, God's Last Judgment,

Awaited them who persecute the poor,

The powerless, the weak, the flock of Christ.

Mournful, not only for that crowd cut down,

But even for these monsters, which might once

Have been but sinners who had thrown away

The everlasting grace of our great Lord

For disbelief of what awaited them,

I turned away and once more looked for peace.

And then I crossed a linedef and some more demons showed up, so I shot a BFG at them.

I asked ChatGPT about the best way to address pointless ChatGPT threads, and it said that it can't condone the only viable solution—which is violence.

Seriously though: if these threads were started by an AI, I would be interested, because they'd be representative of some individual—yeah, it's not a very creative individual, and he writes in cliches, but it'd be providing "it's own" output—but threads where people just paste output... it's like saying: "hey, I'm have no original thoughts or skills of self-expression, so I asked my developmentally challenged friend to write this essay."

It's not even curated output, it's just... nothing.

Didn't realize these were everywhere. Seeing as the tech is so recent, only came out less than a year ago, it still seems pretty novel to me. Maybe I'm just not at the bleeding edge of tech like others are.

Yeah, the whole thing reads out like an edgy action movie script, and Daisy being Doomguy's focus instead of a symbol makes this a bit mediocre.

Mediocre is a bit harsh of a critique for an a.i.-generated paragraph. That's like critiquing an Oblige-generated map. Given how scripts often come out nonsensical or plainly poor, I was quite impressed with how accurate to the source this particular result was. It feels totally at home with the end of episode text crawls.

Totally agree. I didn't post this pretending it was creative in the slightest. By their nature, these a.i. can only regurgitate popular ideas. They are derivative by definition, when they are even cogent. (They may fit grammar rules very well, but often miss humor or basic logic.) I was just screwing around with the program and impressed by this particular result, thought you guys might be interested too.

We've had way too many AI art threads this past year, so that's more the reason I'm fed up with seeing them. The ChatGPT shit is no different. Just bored of seeing it everywhere.

I know it was a bit harsh for an A.I. but I clarified it was good for an a.i. in my second comment though. I do realize that A.I. generated paragraphs usually can still come out as meaningless gibberish with a lot of chat bots.

I think the problem honestly is less that everyone has already talked about ChatGPT, but rather that these kind of threads were someone just posts whatever word vomit they got generated have literally no substance to talk about.  I'm not sure what kind of responses you were expecting besides at best "cool story bro?"

Yes, I do recognize that it's very coherent word vomit and that may be novel to you, but you're still effectively doing the equivalent of posting an oblige map.  Even if oblige generated really good maps, the output still wouldn't be a discussion topic by itself.

Word Vomit? Ouch. I thought it was pretty good for an a.i. And c'mon, a paragraph on a web page is a lot faster and easier to read than downloading a map, choosing where to save it to, loading it in source port, playing through it, etc.

I also don't think the process behind ChatGPT and its kind is the same as the kind of "a.i." behind Oblige. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Oblige takes some certain preset ideas/layouts in whatever proportion you choose and generates something based on that. Chat GPT is based on what its data set says, which is all of humanity on the web, not just presets designed by the developer(s).

I'm not sure what the point of this thread is, this is just as pointless as posting Oblige maps.

Edit: I see Blzut3 already made that point. :V

Ever since the rise of Talk to Transformer and the like years ago, I've generally been of the opinion that the best use of AI stuff is specifically to watch it generate really weird/funny things that let you go "haha why would the bot write that?". By comparison, I tend to find seriously-written stuff by AI to be a bit boring. I get the novelty, but AI being unintentionally funny is where I think the most appeal is.
